towerofanimus | The Midnight Game

As the chosen residents approach the elevator, two retrieval units will be waiting to hand out a sheet of paper to each person. These sheets of paper contain the instructions for their game, as well as a number placing them in one of four groups. The groups will be called one by one into the elevator and, after a long ride down, will be released into an empty version of the Tower identical to the one they just left, with two differences: in place of the countless dormitory rooms are just enough rooms for each group member to occupy one, and each door is made of wood. Inside each room is a candle, a knife that will cut the skin of the person wielding it and nothing else, a blank piece of paper, a book of matches, and a container of salt. Once in their rooms, they are to begin The Midnight Game.

Midnight Game Instruction Sheet
1. Write your complete name on the piece of paper.
2. Use the knife to cut your skin and place at least one drop of blood on the paper, allowing it to soak in.
3. Turn off the lights in your room. This will turn off all the lights in the Tower.
4. Place the piece of paper on the floor in front of the door. Light your candle and plce it on top of the piece of paper.
5. Knock on the dor 22 times. Upon the twenty-second knock, it will be midnight.
6. Open the door, blow out the candle, and close the door.
7. Relight your candle.

You must now move around the Tower, keeping your candle with you at all times. Keep moving to avoid the Midnight Man. If your candle goes out, relight it immediately. If you cannot relight your candle, surround yourself with a circle of salt. If you are unsuccessful you will

Keep moving until 3:33AM. If you are not captured by the Midnight Man, you win the game. If your entire group fails, you will be punished.

[You are returned to the proper Tower via an elevator at 3:33AM. How did you make out?]

[There is a fellow here that looks quite distraught as he paces and frets to himself - and hasn't been seen around before. This isn't the best kind of introduction to the tower for poor Deneb.]

[Nina doesn't recognize the...person?...who is pacing, but he's clearly distraught. She wonders how long he's been here, and she hopes this isn't his first day.

Nevertheless, she'll reach out and try to put a gentle hand on his shoulder.]

Hey. I'm sure it's going to be okay.

[Sora is good at appearing calm. But truth be told, he's panicking. He wants to get this over with as fast as possible. He just wants to retreat to his room and hide now. This is too much on top of everything he learned...!]

[Nina stares down at the piece of paper she's been handed. She tries not to betray her inner anxiety as she looks it over, though there's still a bit of worry hovering in the back of her eyes for anyone observant enough to notice.

Periodically, she'll look up from the instructions at the people around her, observing them. If she sees someone she knows, or someone who looks particularly frightened, she'll go over to them.]

[At the touch, Deneb jumps a little and turns around...to find a person trying to be consoling. He bows at Nina after a momentary pause.]

A-ah, I certainly hope so...

Where is this place, by the by?

_{[Mimio's not fond of being out at night. Kitchen knives can only do so much to defend oneself and if it hadn't been for that creepy message he wouldn't be here. He thought he'd been made sturdier than that!

Oh hey, he's not the only one here, it seems. The guy fretting up there looks pretty upset... his knife goes back into the waistband of his jeans.]}

Hey, you get one 'a those freaky bears too?

[Is he really that new? Oh, no. What a terrible way to be introduced to this place.]

It's the Tower. Just the Tower. That's all we know to call it. They do things like this from time to time. It's frightening, but things always seem to work out in the end.

[Echidna wasn't really handling this well. She had brought the teddy bear with her; the original note was attached to it, so it only seemed to make sense. The paper she had been handed was already starting to be crumpled up in her hand. She had always made fun of a lot of horror movies with her friends, but that didn't mean they didn't terrify her.

She was just a normal kid who missed her mom and dad, about to go who knows where, with unfriendly assistants and darkness in the middle of the night. She hugged the teddy bear close, knocking her glasses slightly askew; the teddy bear was probably not the safest thing to be so attached to at the moment (quite an affront to her usual pride in her genre savviness), but at least it was something.]

[Naminé lingers a little distance away from the elevator, watching the goings on with a frown and concerned expression. She's very still and quite nervous, which is obvious enough if one looks at how stiff her back is and the way her hands are clinging to each other for comfort.]

_{[Marceline's trying to appear calm but she's honestly just a ball of nerves. What did that message mean, 'infected'? Her fingers drum an irregular rhythm on her arms, bass slung around her back. Her mind's too jittery for lyrics at the moment, and she's certain if she hummed it'd break the illusion of cool she's trying to project.]}

...hm?

[What's this? A fellow with cat ears? That's different...

Enough puzzling over the guy's appearance, though - he'd asked Deneb a question, and it would be rude not to answer.]

Yes, I did. Certainly an odd way to wake up. What kind of place is this?

[Given that she shares a room with the younger girl, Nina can't help feeling some sense of responsibility for what happens to her.]

Which group were you put in?

[Although America doesn't look all that calm himself, he still spares an only slightly shaky smile for the girl who seems to have brought one of the bears with her. The Tower has only gotten creepier since he arrived, and, being a hero and all, it was part of his job to try and keep everyone calm, right?

But really, why does he have to be stuck in the middle of a horror movie?]

_{[He shrugs, and it would almost look at ease if not for the tail wrapping around Mimio's legs, still as a stone. Something's not ringing right to him.]}

Yer guess'd be as good as mine. I ain't been here all that long.

[The girl looks up at the sound of Nina's voice, eyes starting to widen, but they go back to normal quickly enough when she sees it's only one of her roommates.] Right.... [She's trying to believe it, really she is.]

I'm in Group Four. ... What about you?

....A-Are you sure?

[She doesn't know this guy, but the smile's better than nothing.]

I-I mean why are they doing this?! W-What's even going on?!

[Aqua is at the elevator and standing at wary attention, Eraqus' Keyblade in one hand and bear gripped firmly by one of its arms in the other. She contemplated destroying it as soon as she got it, but decided that doing so would probably result in consequences she didn't want to be subjected to.

Though they might have been better than whatever was going to happen after this.

Thankfully she'd had enough time now to recover and rest so that she was at almost full strength again, at least magically. She was as prepared as she could be for the Tower's methods this time.]

The Tower...

[His head tilts down a bit as he mumbles to himself, going over recent events in his head, and trying to piece it to what information he got from the note.]

[After about a minute, Deneb makes a noise like choking back a noise of anguish, then falls down on his knees - either the Oni attack on time itself shunted him out like it'd done to Yuuto, or the Oni succeeded before he and the others could get started on fixing things.]
