[Predictably, John hears the footsteps before anything else. He's mostly walking around the gallery floor, not really paying much attention to anything that tries to beckon from the walls. Normally, he would be flying all over the place, making blatant abuse of his windy powers to fuel his laziness... but he didn't want to run into anything like he did on the Cathedral ceiling (that had hurt for weeks), and with this almost labyrinthine floor plan, corners came in abundance.]
