His dancing around the subject was probably a sign that he didn't want to talk about it, but that didn't occur to her until after she'd already blurted it out. 'Died' sounded like the wrong word, anyway; 'were killed' was probably better. The surprise eased out of her face and was replaced by something apologetic. Her voice had only been a little louder than usual in the first exclamation, and at the next words, it was gentler, more for his benefit than any lack of confusion on her part. "...Why? Why did he--...?"

She hadn't meant to fall silent so suddenly, but that was what she did, the fingertips of one hand curling around the edge of the collar. Maybe... they really were Nobodies.
