No, that isn't it. I just don't see the relevance. Food is food, and if nutrition can be derived from it, it serves its purpose. I'm aware that other species put an emphasis on it, though.

On Earth, there is a holiday in October called 'Halloween', or All Hallows' Eve. It occurs on the final night of the month, but people who celebrate it spend the month preparing. On that night, children dress in costumes and go from house to house in their neighborhood, requesting treats. There's a lot of history behind it, and other holidays that occur at the same time as well, but basically that's why there is such an emphasis on pumpkins right now. Aside from this being harvest time, during the Halloween season it is customary to hollow out pumpkins and carve them into lanterns.
