Jin follows the dog's motion to the sign, and it's not that much harder to draw the right conclusion. He hardly talked to the other two who lived here, and he was fairly certain that Koromaru wouldn't be tracking down strangers. He seemed pretty indifferent to Jin himself, plus the collar was a bit different-- which could only mean that Koromaru was looking for Shinjiro.

And the next logical conclusion would've been that this Koromaru was from a different universe. His Koromaru wasn't exactly indifferent to Shinjiro, but surely he'd have already known that the guy was dead, and he recalled the man telling him about his own universe, where Ken and Koromaru were both members of SEES.

When he decides that this must be it, he settles to look at the dog again with his typically disdainful look. "Beat it. He's not here."

Some part of him that he'd never acknowledge or understand might have been disappointed at this turn of events. You know, the part he would choke and let starve and die.
