The workshop has become one of those places where Diarmuid spends a lot of time when he isn't patrolling. First, he had been attempting to find a way to make his own non-magical weapons. After many failed attempts since he had never been taught how to make a weapon from scratch, Waver had made a pair of swords for him that filled that need perfectly. Even after that Diarmuid had spent a lot of time in the workshop trying to teach himself, his goal no longer to make weapons for himself, but to find a way to repair his friend's broken spear.

He doesn't know if the workshop has anything near what Thorin Oakenshield needs to work his craft, but considering how much time he has spent there, Diarmuid has no problem showing the dwarf what there is and warning him about the dangers he's found with the equipment.

And maybe between the three of them--who is Diarmuid kidding? Thorin and Kain will probably do most of the work--they will find a way to fix the spear that the Tower so cruelly shattered when they brought Kain back here.  At least, is what Diarmuid had been hoping when he had asked Kain to join he and Thorin in the workshop.

Thorin made his way to Floor 15 with some haste, as he wanted to see what Diarmuid's workshop was really like. He'd been wanting to see a real workshop and smithy since arriving within the tower. Now sounded like the opportune moment to satisfy that curiosity. He pushed the door to, as he entered the workshop. He immediately started a search for Diarmuid to see if he was around. Thorin's eyes darted to the workbenches and tools, which lay around the place. It reminded him heavily of back home up in the mountains. How he missed that now.

Seated upon a bench is one Kain Highwind, with the broken pieces of his spear bundled in a spare bedsheet beside him. The workshop was a place that he seemed to spend far too much of his time, crafting new spears to replace the ones that he kept breaking from overly-vigorous use. When Diarmuid had proposed the possibility of meeting someone that might repair his Holy Lance, Kain was very much interested. And so he had arrived a little early, and was keeping an eye out.

"...ah!" And he was surprised that, apparently, the 'Thorin Oakenshield' that he had been told about was the fellow he had previously seen on the network. He was also surprised at the fellow's height. But these weren't bad surprises. He sat a little straighter and spoke. "I hadn't expected to see someone that I had already met. Perhaps I should have! Good day to you."

Thorin nodded to both Diamuid and the new warrior called Kain. He looked around at the disorganised mess which was the workshop. Back home he used to keep a tidy workshop and forge high up in the Blue Mountains. This was the tower, so he was lucky to have even found such a place within the horror and disorganised chaos. "It will do. I cannot promise that I can fix the spear but I will try." Thorin gave Kain a nod, as he looked at the shattered weapon. It was a majestic and well-made weapon, Thorin could see from the workmanship. It was far from being dwarven made though.

"What are the origins of the spear, Kain? I am curious to know what materials it is made out of."

Ack, didn't get a notification! Forgive me!

Kain gives an absent nod to Diarmuid in return. "Yes, over the network. We've exchanged words briefly."

And his attention was immediately back on Thorin. He was very, very eager to discuss the matter of repairing his spear. Kain rose from the bench, turned about, and unwrapped the bedsheet from around the pieces.

"For even trying, you have my gratitude." The pieces were of a simple enough weapon, but beautiful for its simplicity. And closer inspection revealed fine engravings along the shaft, and the head still held a wickedly sharp edge.

"It was found on my world's second moon. It is of Lunarian origin, and that's all that I know. It's likely crafted of no earthly metal. I've seen weapons worked in mythril of similar design and quality, but... there's something more to this holy lance."

Thorin gazed down at the spear and marvelled at the work put into it. It was like nothing he'd ever seen before and wanted to give the weapon the work it deserved. Lunarian. A word unfamiliar to him, as he looked to Kain. Meeting new people and seeing new weapons gave Thorin a wider outlook upon other cultures. This meeting was going to prove quite a challenge to him, something he may enjoy greatly.

"We do not usually deal with magical items, as we just forge weapons out of the metal they come from. We do not deal with magic, as that is best left to the wizards of our world. Yet, I aim to attempt to use my skills and make this weapon complete once more." He looked at Kain once more after addressing Diarmuid.

"The magic component....does it require the component to be forged into the spear itself?"
ajealouswind: (Doubtful)

So yeah

"There was magic infused in it, yes. If it remains, I've no way of knowing." A similar anger was in Kain's expression. To have something so objectively valuable and so valuable to him so casually broken was infuriating. That anger had died down into the slightest simmer over time, but never dissipated entirely.

"I can live without the enchantment that it held, if that's beyond you. If it can be made into a reliable weapon that's not prone to snapping if I fight too fiercely, that will be enough." He had hoped that Durin's talents could restore the lance to its proper state, but not too hard. There was acceptance in his voice and expression. "I've no idea what would have been used to place that enchantment upon it. Perhaps a blessing was placed upon it? Or it was forged in... dragon's flame? I... no, I'll stop." He lifted a hand to his forehead and sighed. This was so, so far beyond him.

Thorin listened to both men discussing the enchantments. Since dwarves only forged weapons lacking any form of enchantment, Thorin was hoping that Kain would not object to no enchantment. "We dwarves are used to forging strong weapons that last well within battle. Enchantments and magic are left the elves within out world and nothing to do with us." He let his fingers brush over the fragments.

"I agree with Diarmuid, Kain. Tis better to have a forged spear that cuts through flesh easily, than to have a half-forged magic rod that does nothing. I cannot forge magic items, since I know not how to do such a thing." He looked at Kain and sighed.

"...dwarves?" Kain's head lifts, surprise on his face, a smile slowly growing. "Then I know that my lance is in truly good hands. The dwarves of my world have many expert weapon-smiths among them."

He gives a nod to both Thorin and Diarmuid. "If it can be restored to a sturdy, usable weapon, that is more than enough. Let's not concern ourselves with magical matters."

[personal profile] sonof_thrain 2013-07-20 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
Thorin nodded. "Aye, I am a dwarf from the house of Durin. As far as I know, I am the only dwarf which lives within this Tower, as there are no other of my kin." He was slightly bitter about that but grateful at the same time. Would he really want another of his kin trapped within this hell hole with him? Some friendship would be nice, yet he sought to escape and not spend the rest of his life within the tower.

"Aye. If you give me the necessary materials, I shall begin work right away."

"Such is living in this tower. I've met others who are the only ones of their world, or their kind. You have my condolences." And that was the most that he could think to say, or to give. It was pain to be alone here. It was a different sort of pain to have those you cared about in this tower, too.

He nodded to Diarmuid. "If you can, that would be helpful. Thank you." And then his attention returned to Thorin. "Where should we begin?

[personal profile] sonof_thrain 2013-07-23 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
Thorin nodded at Diarmuid and Kain, as he set about readying his tools. How would he forge such a magical weapon back to it's true shape? He would damn well try though. If a dwarf could not forge it, who else could? "I will give it my best shot, Kain. Diarmuid? I will no doubt be asking questions as I work on the spear." He pulled on his apron and made sure it was done up tightly at the back.

"I know little about blacksmithing and weapon forging. But I will answer what I can." Kain stepped back, so as to give Thorin plenty of room to work and sort himself out.

Thorin took heed of Diarmuid's words about the forge. This troubled him some, as he was used to the forge being reliable, at least at home. Was this another curse from the Tower? He nodded to Diarmuid and look down at the work table. "I shall make sure the forge is at the right temperature, as I can take a good guess at how hot it is." He was skilled in such an art of metal forging. This should be no different.

"Do you know why the forge temperature differs so?"
