Summary: An experiment. Takes place sometime during Sora's month-long nap.

[It was a nice day on the islands. It was warm, and a pleasant breeze was all that came close to disturbing the peaceful stillness. It wasn't much different from any other day, really. Not many days on Destiny Islands were.

And, like on most days, there was a little boy on the beach of the smaller island. Today, though, there weren't many people there with him - in fact, there was only one. But that was okay; it was a new person, and Sora liked meeting new people.

He was also collecting seashells in a small bucket; those were for his mom. He picked up one more; a pretty piece of a thalassa shell, half-buried in the sand, and put it in the bucket before finally speaking.]

[The other boy was about Sora's age, with unkempt silver hair and darker skin. He was sitting and staring out over the ocean as though mesmerized, although he turned to look at Sora when he started to speak.]

I know lots of good stories. It depends on what you want to hear!

[What he wants to hear? That was a tough choice for someone like Sora; he wanted to hear everything. He had to pause for a minute to consider, placing the bucket of shells to the side and sitting down. But even then, he wasn't really sure.]

Well, I dunno. What's your favorite?

[The other boy leans back slightly, turning back to the ocean as he thinks before speaking slowly and deliberately as though recalling while talking.]

I think my favourite story is about the rebirth of the Universe! It's a sad story, though...

Sad?

[Sora looks away as well, as if taking a moment to consider just what might be so sad about something like that. Sad stories aren't his favorite - he prefers tales of heroics, and adventures in faraway worlds. But he can't help being curious, either.

His eyes turn back to focus on Xehanort, his curiosity obvious from his expression.]

What happens?

Well...

[He twists his hands a little in his lap.]

Once upon a time the world was big and beautiful and full of light and darkness in balance. But then people began to covet the light and shun darkness out of fear. The biggest and most beautiful source of light was highly desired, because the one who possessed it would gain unlimited knowledge, and so eventually a war broke out over it that swept across the universe, dragging in any worlds in its path regardless of whether they were involved or not.

[People...fought over the light? But there was lots of light! Why couldn't they all just share? It didn't make sense to Sora, to hurt people over something like that.]

So, then, what happened to all the worlds? Did the people ever stop fighting?

[He hangs his head sadly.]

They never stopped, and the universe was torn apart and all the worlds cast into a sea of darkness.

What?! That's really sad!

[When he said it was a sad story, Sora didn't think it would be THAT bad. There's no way that's the end. He continues to sit still, listening intently for more.]

[Maybe the pause was for dramatic effect, or to let the event sink in. After a moment or two of silence, he finally continues.]

Thankfully, living beings were worthy of a second chance, and from the darkness was birthed light that eventually became the hearts of all the worlds. The universe was still wounded though, and to prevent another great war from happening, all the worlds were separated from each other and barriers placed between.

Woah...

[It's still pretty sad that the worlds have to be separated...but at least it's not as sad, if the light still came back. Still, why did everything have to be separate? Couldn't people just learn their lesson and not fight?]

So is that why other worlds are so hard to get to? Because they're all separated?

Of course. It was the best protection. However, there were those who could travel between worlds because they possessed the key to do so. They were to be protectors and guardians, but...

The...key?

[His thoughts stop to linger on that word for just a moment - key. It means something, but he can't quite place it. He looks off to the side, thinks it over...but he comes up with nothing. Nothing specific, anyway.]

...but what?

[A long, slow exhalation, as though saying something painful.]

What they believed in, what they strove for and fought for... was more harmful than good. They chased after light, destroying darkness wherever it dwelled and wherever it bred, all saying it was for the good of all the worlds.

So, the light the world was born from came from the darkness, right? Does that mean the worlds need both to be okay?

[He's not sure he gets it. Not really. But he's trying his hardest to understand.]

And if the worlds need both, then you're saying that they destroyed too much of the darkness.

[A simple, happy smile.] They're both necessary. You can't have one without the other. That's just not how it works.

Yes. So the darkness tried to make up the difference. It was just seen as aggression, and so they fought even harder against it. You can't just ignore half of how the universe works.

That's why everything's so broken. They were supposed to protect, but instead they just got everything unbalanced.

[It's funny - nothing seems broken to Sora. Everything on the islands has always been just fine. But all the other worlds were really far away, so...maybe that's what made them broken. Maybe they were all supposed to get closer, not farther apart.]

But, what I don't get is...

[His tone, right now, makes him sound a bit older, as if the dream is forgetting how young he's supposed to be. Or maybe it's because he's thought about this question before, even if he can't recall that right now.]

What are light and darkness, anyway?

Constants of the universe, the building blocks of all things. Everything has light and darkness within it. There is little that either cannot touch. They are both necessary in an ordered universe, and in equal shares without one being favoured over another.

[His voice and words betray the young form he wears for a moment as well.]

[Light and Darkness. To a child, it sounds as if they should be as simple as good and bad. But how can either one be bad, if everybody needs both? And if it isn't just as simple as one being good and the other being bad, how are they different?

Right now, those answers were beyond Sora; even if he wasn't a child, they still would be. There's too much that he doesn't know, and hasn't had a chance to see.]

Maybe...maybe it all makes more sense after going to visit other worlds.

[After all, he's talking about the universe, and Sora's only seen a very tiny part of it.]

Maybe it does and maybe it doesn't. Maybe things will become as clear as mud. There's so few people who know the truth, and even fewer who would be willing to believe it if they heard it. It's a sad state of affairs, even when those who claim to be fighting to protect the World are doing just the opposite.

It all sounds so complicated. [A sigh.] But it's still worth trying to figure out how to help people, right?

[Sora takes a few steps forward, until the waves are lapping at his feet. He looks up, staring at at the sky.]

And even if the answers aren't easy to find, maybe there will be something else to find. Someday...someday, my friends and I are gonna go see what's out there!

Maybe the best way to help is the way that no one wants to go. Maybe the one who wants to make a difference is the one that no one trusts. Maybe someone has taken on the burden of balance and the only thing people think is that they're bad. Who knows the truth? No one is willing to see it. Maybe that's the saddest part of all.

Just be careful not to fall too far. There's no bottom out there and no safety net. If you die in your dream, you never wake up again... right?
