Trying to make sense of a senseless world {Open to all}

Characters: Elian Zigmarl and anyone
Setting: 5th September, Daytime Floors 1-6
Format: Prose but I'll match
Summary: Elian is working as his job as a janitor like a good little soldier only that he's found some really weird things along the way in the form of molds and fungus.
Warnings: None really other some probably gross science talk.

Elian started collecting some rather unusual things around the tower lately and he's looking to use them to keep his mind occupied. He scooped up some strange growth in the corners without really batting an eye.

Mostly out of boredom, he wondered if these strange molds and fungi could be used for something necessary. He may decide to do a bit more exploring with a little enabling.

Shion had been lying low for a few days, only really appearing to make sure that Xion was alright. He was shaken up from the events of the last week; he missed Reno, wished his friend would come back. He had been gone so long this time, Shion wondered if he had disappeared for good.

He had been avoiding the library but he knew he had to return to work eventually. It was on his way there that he saw his other roommate.

"Hello Elian!"

"Hello, Shion." Elian looked over his shoulder with a smile. His work and trying to keep himself from going crazy in this place was really the only thing he could do. He wasn't intentionally being antisocial. He was, in fact, far from it.

The arrival of a friend from home and a troubled arrival at that, Elian was looking for a way to cure amnesia. He had no such luck. He set the samples onto his cart and and made his approach. "How are doing?"

He could tell that there was a bit of sadness in Shion's voice. He wasn't too familiar with Reno or anyone else to understand what was going on. The recent attacks only made things worse and perpetuated doubt.

"I'm collecting molds and fungus. Would you like to help?" It seemed almost random for Elian to ask.

Shion had noticed that Elian didn't seem to be sleeping as much as he was, and was a little bit worried. However he didn't know the boy very much so hadn't wanted to smother him. "I'm alright, how are you?"

He blinked at the fungi and then grinned, "Yes I would, do you like collecting such things? I studied a lot of them that we found before you came, when we had no power. There was no food and so we needed to forage our own from the forest, the bio diversity of the tower is just incredibly."

Sorry Elian I hope you don't mind an ecology enthusiast.

"I'm okay. I'm better now that I'm not so tired. I'm trying to help a friend that lost his memories."

He listened and nodded his head at the offer. Elian was a bit naive about some things and this little collecting adventure was just what he needed. However, he tilted his head the moment Shion mentioned eating the stuff.

"Is it edible?" He couldn't exactly dismiss everything even if it was weird. With Shion's help, he would be more than happy to continue his search. Then again, he was eating stranger things at his arrival so eating moss, fungus and molds wasn't that much of a stretch.

"Your friend lost his memories? How?" Shion looked very worried; he knew that not everyone could remember things like he could but the idea of losing his memories terrified him.

"This one isn't." Talking about edible plants was much easier than dwelling on that news, "You have to be careful, some can be dangerous or even deadly if you eat them. But there are many around that aren't and taste good."

"He was like that before he arrived. He went to the Other Side and came out without his memories. The Stream took them and he has to get them back by himself." Elian looked on as Shion pointed the edible ones out from the toxic ones.

"I didn't know what the Tower provided food in such ways. It does make sense if there is a shortage or if supplies run out. Thank you for helping me on this. I'm still learning." Elian took a mental note of each one.

"This one smells like mint."

"The other side? Stream?" Something from Elian's world Shion guessed, it was strange to him but he knew just from talking to Xion and Reno that some of the worlds were completely different than his own.

"I'm happy to show you, the more people know the less people will go hungry if they ever stop the food supplies." He looked at the one that Elian claimed smelled like mint, "There are a lot of books in the library, let's put that one aside to look up later."

"Right." Elian did as he was instructed and placed the mossy plant in a collection jar with the label Unknown 1. He looked up from the basket toward Shion to address his questions.

"The Other Side is a dimensional gateway that allows me to use my power but I have never seen it myself. The Stream is the energy that flows through it that gives us the power to deconstruct and reconstruct matter in any way we choose. Most of the time, what we choose is pretty consistent to our mental ability, or in some cases physical. I can control and destroy electronic devices. This Tower has my power blocked, therefore I am unable to tap into the network remotely like I used to." Which was fine. He was still able to receive messages remotely which often prompts him to check the terminals.

"My friend...lost his memories to the Other Side. I only hope it's temporary." He closed the jar snugly and picked up another one.

"It's good that you know this and it's a very useful skill." Elian complimented his roommate.

Shion blinked but listened carefully, Elian could control electronic devices? "Your friend had powers too?" It seemed very different than the magic of Reno's world or Xion's; their two's seemed similar but Shion hadn't spoken to anyone in depth about the magic or powers in their world, his own had and so it was complicated to him.

"So when you weren't here you could control machines? All machines like cars and such or just computerised ones?"

"More specifically, electronics. They are easier to receive signals. If it has a computer, I can shut it down or start it up along with manipulating the radio but somehow they're shielded from complete control. I think it's the tires. They're not grounded the same as say something that is plugged into a wall." He stated clearly. Talking about it made coping with the loss of this ability easier and it was strangely acute that he was beginning to see why the Tower has the blocks on him.

"Yes, my friend has an Alter too but I can't really explain it. It's not anything like mine. His is more combat based where mine is more passive. Alters have the ability to sense others depending on if they are powerful enough to listen with their power. It's a gravitation that drives them to fight." Which was something that Elian was slowly beginning to understand himself.

Shion nodded understanding, "That must have been very useful." And so strange to have lost that ability if he had it all his life, "You can sense others?"

"Yes, if I concentrate or know their bio-signs, I can tell if they are alive or they are in need of help. Unfortunately, it doesn't work in sensing me."

Elian felt cold and empty without the use of his powers which really made him feel even that much more scared for the lives of others. His ability was his attachment to humanity and without it, it was like being placed behind glass and just watching everything happen with no way of helping or being a part of their lives.

Shion nodded, "That seems useful, why doesn't it work in sensing you?"

"It's not impossible but sometimes if people are not that close to me to care emotionally about me, they won't be able to sense me." Elian has felt that pain of being forgotten more than once in his life and there were times that he wished he had the ability to open up the minds of others.

The two that he had performed biolinks before, left the tower and he felt them vanish.

"Oh..." Shion nodded, only half understanding, "So there are a lot of people who can sense others in your world, just not you?"

That was interesting, it made him wonder what was different about Elian for him to not be sensed.

"Yes and that's because I'm not human. I am a clone. I was created unnaturally and refined for the purpose of experimentation." He was used to being judged and shunned for that reason alone. The other being an Alter user, his life was anything but simple back home.

He was hidden away for a reason by his father. Elian's creation sparked a whole new set of controversial issues on human experimentation and since Elian was the furthest of being human, he didn't count according to the government. He was nothing more than property.

Shion blinked, "You're a clone?" Far from dirisive his tone sounded interested and amazed. Cloning was not something that had happened. But experimentation? A wave of anger hit Shion at the idea of his new friend being hurt at all.

His voice was low and serious, "Did they hurt you?"

"Correct on both accounts but that doesn't matter anymore." Elian slide the jars around in the basket. "I'm okay now. This place was no different than the facility that created me. The differences are the people that reside here with me and I'm not locked in a pod."

Elian looked up at Shion and reached for his hand. "I'm learning how to be more human each time I interact. For that, I thank you."

Shion blinked, that was awful. This place was bad enough, taking people to experiment on them; but to create someone for the sole purposes of experimenting on them was awful...

He took Elian's hand when it was reached out to him and held it tight. "I'm sorry that happened to you Elian, and that you are here now." His eyes were shining, his tone completely sincere.

"Don't worry. If it's anything like what I remember, as long as we don't make the Administration angry, we'll be okay. I wasn't created to fight with my hands." He indicated with his free hand and pointed to his head. "This weapon they can't take away."

Elian noticed Shion's shining eyes and something within him pulled closer to hug Shion. His small body was surprisingly strong. "We'll be okay. As long as we breathe, we have hope."

Shion nodded, he might have not been created but his mind was his greatest weapon as well, he learned to fight of course but he knew his intelligence could help people.

He returned the hug, "You're right. As long as we breathe we have hope."
