Missing Pieces
Characters: Lucifer, a nanny summoned demon, and You (Open)
Setting: The staircase between Floors 22 and 24
Format: Prose, but I can adapt to whatever
Summary: Lucifer finds out about the mystery of the missing 23rd floor and decides to do some experimenting
Warnings: Talking with the devil, possible squick involving disappearing
The woman in black isn't pleased.
True. He is her master, and despite what appearances were at the moment he was far older than her. Far more knowledgeable in every aspect. She was merely a creation of his will meant for two reasons: to add to the illusion of his current appearance and, if it did become a necessity, to help him should he need the care. The first reason only worked ever so well - Lucifer had never been fantastic at hiding who he was - and the second reason never had seemed to come up at all as the lord of demons tended to be able to care for himself quite well.
But both reasons, applicable or not, effected her personality in such a way that she felt true affection for her master. And, just now, concern.
The old woman in black had never seen her master appear injured before. Or harmed. And the sight of him in such a state as when he summoned her...it shocked her at first. Her reaction came without thought as she bent a little, reaching a hand out to touch the 'boy' in front of her. "Master. Are you well?" The voice was steady. Even. But still, for the first time, a little scared.
Lucifer looked at the summoned demon with surprise and, to a degree, annoyance as he stepped back away from her touch. He frowned a little; to see own of his creations alarmed by his current did his own state at the moment no favors. "I'm as well as I can be. I just need a bit of assistance, perhaps."
Alarm shot through the demon's mind. There was something off with her master. He looked...paler? No. Not paler. It was more as if he was becoming translucent. As if, little by little, something had been wearing him away. And his voice sounded weaker? No. Also not right. Quieter perhaps but not weak. As if he was speaking from someplace far away. Much further from where he was. He looked not so much like a living creature as much as a drawing somehow come to life. She hesitates before bowing slightly to him in acknowledgement. "Yes, master. For what service am I needed?"
Lucifer paused a moment, his head tilting and twisting to look behind him. To look back at the staircase he had just exited. "There is something...odd about the rooms here. I go up the staircase and I reach a destination but it feels like I'm...missing something."
"...Missing something. I see." The woman in black paused, before asking "Do you wish me to explore it?"
"No." The reply was instant, Lucifer shaking his head to punctuate the point. "It must be me to look for it." And his tone showed he was insistent on this point. "It's as if...I pass through a room, but it's not one I see. And the walk feels so much longer than it should between floors. There's something there. Alone." It had to be him. He didn't know why but he was drawn to continue to explore it. He felt excited, to a point; perhaps he had stumbled upon something no other had. Perhaps even an answer. He just needed to have the perseverance to continue to chase it until it showed itself, and such perseverance was something Lucifer prided himself on having.
Still. He knew there was something wrong. Something off. It would in fact be a better idea to bring the demon with him. But his pride wouldn't allow it. His pride and something else that he couldn't identify at the moment. "I need you to stand watch. I don't wish to be disturbed." He turned his back on the nanny, heading back to the stairwell and beginning to ascend. "Keep any others from entering until I am done."
The nanny bowed, and prepared to say something until she had noticed that Lucifer had disappeared into the darkness of the stairwell again. She looked up, hesitantly, hoping she would soon see the demon come back down. Wishing she could say for certain she knew she would see Lucifer return.
If you're using the stairs today and are in that area and are coming down yourself you may bump into a boy who looks to be around the age of ten. And he doesn't look like he's all there. Or happy to see you for that matter. The faded boy's reaction will differ between simply trying to walk past you, glowering at you, or if he's in a particular foul mood at the moment, pushing you out of the way. Or trying to. His push feels more like the wind is pulling at you at this point.
Or perhaps you'll be on floor 22 and may notice an elderly woman in black looking up the staircase. And she'll notice you. She'll stare for a moment before waving a little with her hand, motioning for you to come forward.
"Please." She says, "If I could have a moment of your time. I believe I may need help."

action-floor 22
"I believe there might be a problem with my..." she hesitates for a moment. Master was the proper term, and what she used most often even with others. But there was a chance it could give off a poor immediate image in using it. So she thinks briefly on how to proceed before saying, "with the child I look after. I may need some help in bringing him back safely to his room."
Re: action-floor 22
It almost sounded like something Maria would do: running away from their caretaker during a tantrum.
