Warnings: potential for violence

Saber had not been right since the end of October, the end of that trick or treat candy hunt. No, she'd failed the one thing she'd intended to do and it was just another knife into her gut to know she'd failed as king again. It made it near impossible to keep the corruption, the taint of Angra Mainyu at bay, to not listen to the whispers of those evils, of the darkness feeding her rage.

So, Saber had taken to keeping herself away from others. When she found the new floor, the one with the gravestones, she wandered about them. Being on an unfamiliar floor, she was clad in her blackened armor, the red lines a lot more prominent than usual emitting a faint glow and the mark of the tainted grail has spread up her cheek. She was not okay, but she had no means right then to regain herself.

Eventually, a name on a stone caught her attention and she stopped before it. Silently, she looked down at the grave. Unmoving, she may as well be yet another forlorn statue in the graveyard.

Until someone else showed up...

Instead of flesh and bone, the sword made contact with another blade with a loud clang.

It had been pure luck that Jeanne had only been on the floor below the graveyard. She, like many of the other residents, could not contain her curiosity for very long. And drawing out a mental map of the tower would prove to be useful in the future, right?

Well, whatever her reason for being nearby, it didn't matter now. What mattered was that she felt that strange feeling of a Servant engaging in battle shooting straight down her spine at the very same time she sensed Kariya calling out to her. So without a second she dashed off, and arrived just in time.

"Stand down, Saber," She commanded. Her voice was hard as the steel of her blade, completely different from the times she had chatted so civilly with the two she had come between.

"This man is under my protection, and even with no Holy Grail War, you are forbidden to attack one under the protection of the overseer. So I will say it again: stand down."

Kariya, not nearly fast enough to escape, nonetheless didn't give up. He kept moving away, but he didn't want to turn and run, to show her his back, so he could only watch Saber approach as he made his agonizingly slow retreat. "Ruler," he said again, more quietly, but as she didn't arrive, he grew nearly certain of his own death. He was afraid.

He'd learned that the dead returned to life in the tower, so he knew it wouldn't be permanent, but he still feared dying and pain, even after suffering so much already. He had no prayers to say, but at Saber's words, he thought of Aoi. Hers was the face he most wanted to see. Now and always.

He closed his eyes and fell back as Saber's sword sped toward him. He waited for the blow--then heard that metallic clash of blade meeting blade. His eyes snapped open. He saw Ruler standing there, sword in hand, and he let out a deep breath, the sound harsh in his throat, as relief washed over him.

"Thank you."

The prana surge did its job well, sending Jeanne stumbling back a few feet. It wasn't just the attack that caught the girl off-guard; that flood of foul, corrupted magical energy was nearly overwhelming for someone like Jeanne.

But Saber's follow-up attack worked less than well. The saint let herself be caught off-guard once, and that wasn't going to happen again. Not when a life of someone she's supposed to be protecting is on the line.

She braced herself, bringing her sword down to meet Saber's upward strike once more with a loud clash of steel, using every bit of that enhanced strength of hers to keep the dark blade from knocking her own from her hands.

"Must you make me repeat myself?" Her voice, while just as fierce as when she commanded Saber a moment ago, was notably strained. "If you are a true knight, then you must obey the rules that all Servants must follow! Lower your sword!"

Kariya didn't have time to enjoy his relief as Saber continued to attack. He scrambled back as well as he could, coughing up more blood. He had been continually drained by the worms since arriving. He was so tired, but he still wasn't willing to lie down and die, even if that might have been easier. He struggled back to his feet.

He was dimly aware of the fact that he had coughed up some worms along with the blood, and they were already transforming into their violent and vicious Blade Wing form, responding to the battle and the danger to Kariya himself. A few of them swept in toward Saber, and Kariya didn't stop them. He didn't think it would make much difference, considering how Saber had dealt with them before.

He watched Saber and Ruler fight, overwhelmed and amazed by the feeling of power that came from them as they clashed and he did his best to stay out of the way. There was no denying that these were Heroes.

Even as Saber's superior strength pushed her back, feet digging into the ground as she tried to keep herself from falling or being slammed into a headstone or an open grave, Jeanne didn't give in. Her expression certainly reflected this determination - despite her strained voice, the fire burning in her violet eyes didn't waver one bit.

So focused was she on trying not to be overwhelmed by Saber's strength, she almost toppled over when their swords disengaged. She was able to catch her footing though, when Saber instead focused on the insects that had suddenly attacked her. Throwing a sharp glare at Kariya over her shoulder, she spoke again.

"Provoking an enemy will only make matters worse. You must stay your hand as well, Kariya."

And then she turned back to Saber, eying the way she held her sword now. Jeanne didn't relax the grip on her own sword just yet.

"Do you yield?"

He kept his eyes on them both, relaxing again slightly as Saber's sword pointed behind her. Was she going to stop fighting now? He wasn't going to believe it until he saw it actually happen, until she said she recognized Ruler's authority.

He was shamefaced at Ruler's rebuke. He hadn't meant to provoke her further. The worms were only partially under his control. "Yes. I'm sorry," says Kariya. "I didn't mean to. They can't hurt her." He tried to will the remaining Blade Wing Worms back. They flew back to him, and he regarded them, these things he controlled, which were part of him, yet which he hated.

He looked back to Saber. Would she yield?

Jeanne tensed, clearly preparing for a second clash...

But none came. She looked wary at Saber's brief moment of hesitation, still not letting her guard down at all, even when the other Servant spoke up again.

"... Thank you." She relaxes her stance, just a little, but still keeps her grip on her sword tight.

"I trust that you will follow the rules concerning Kariya's current status from this point on. But I will warn you that if you do not, I will not stay on the defense the next time we must clash."
