His Prejudice for Failure

Characters: Haldir, Legolas, & possibly Gandalf later.
Setting: Room 02-20
Format: Prose or Action, whichever
Summary: Sometimes pride can be a very deadly thing, especially when one values their pride over their own health.
Warnings: PG-13

A look of sorrow settled in the march warden's gaze as he stared at his wounded hands. The burns there have begun to heal, but they healed slowly. There were too many ugly marks lining in-between his fingers, some of which were dark scabs that healed over the last few days. His hands lacked the regal elegance they once bore, now looking to be scraggly and homely. A deep sigh escaped Haldir as he carefully wrapped them in ointment drenched bandages. Despite all his efforts, the march warden realized he would need help. He utterly detests the thought of asking White Wizard for assistance, but it looks as if his options were waning.

Almost done wrapping his hands, Haldir paused once he heard a knock at the door. He had known that the Prince of Mirkwood would make an appearance soon. Since the last time they've spoke, Legolas showed great concern for his well-being. Whether or not Haldir appreciated such concern is another matter all by itself, but the march warden couldn't help but feel somewhat grateful. If it hadn't been for Legolas, the march warden was certain that he would've perished in this hell months ago. Therefore, he honestly cannot claim to dislike the younger elf too much. In truth, he's actually grown quite fond of him.

"Creoso a'baramin, mellonamin." He called out towards the door.

Any other day that scowl might hurt him but not today. Not right now. Not when Haldir's hands were obviously much worse off than Legolas thought they would be. He'd take too long to get what he needed. It would be necessary to convince him to see Gandalf now.

"Failed? Haldir, you have never failed." He reached forward, carefully grasping his arm and trying to convey that message both in words and in his eyes. He could understand, in a way.

"How will you do anything more in the tower if you lose the use of your hands? How will that prove anything? It's foolishness to refuse aid when you need it, not pride. Not worthiness."

Legolas would never think him weak. Haldir was among the strongest people he knew, he simply couldn't express it.

He could hug the march warden, he really could. For concern of disturbing his hands and causing him pain though, Legolas resisted. Perhaps later once he was certain his hands would be saved and Haldir was in a better mood, for all of Legolas' persistence.

"I shan't rest until I know you are healed, would be more appropriate. Thank you Haldir. I've been worrying for you since you first showed me your hands." An admission that Legolas wouldn't make any other time but the relief of knowing that Haldir would seek Gandalf's help has made him less concerned about that.

That glance is what forces him to change him mind about the hug, leaning forward and embracing Haldir. Whatever worry Haldir felt, Legolas was going to take away what he could of it.

"I know that it was not your intent but I would worry regardless. You wouldn't be able to stop me." He would go with him, when he sought out Gandalf. Legolas wouldn't let Haldir go through this alone, especially when he had confided in the prince. Never mind that Legolas had been pushy in making Haldir admit what ailed him.

"I will go with you."

"Lle creoso, mellonamin." He held onto Haldir for as long as he wanted him to, tightening his own embrace just slightly when Haldir did. He wanted him to know that there was no need for concern now, that everything would be alright. Legolas would make sure that his friend healed, even if it took making a request of an administrator.

"We'll not let him. He is old and wise enough to understand elven pride and how stubborn one can be." He smiled, ever so slightly, when Haldir lay his head against his shoulder and just let him lean there like that for awhile.

Oh, he couldn't help but smile at that tone in his voice, almost as though it were Legolas who was refusing and Haldir was taking charge. He'd let him have that though, and nodded.

"He knows that there is someone in the tower that has injured their hands. I did not tell him that it was you, however he will know soon enough."

Legolas had done his best to protect Haldir's dignity in the hopes of his hands healing without any more intervention. Knowing Gandalf though, he had already guessed who the injured party was despite the many friends Legolas had made here.

Legolas watched how quickly Haldir recovered himself and fell back into acting like the leader of her march wardens. He didn't mind it, so long as Haldir didn't let anything interfere with his health again.

The prince quickly rose with him, straightening his clothes and waiting until Haldir was ready to go. He made a face as the daggers were taken, unwilling to let Haldir fight if it was necessary. And Legolas was glad now that he carried his twin knives with him.

"He shouldn't be difficult to find." Gandalf probably knew already that they were going to find him now.

And lo, they would find the white wizard faster than they thought for the moment they set foot on the dorm floor and headed to their destination, Gandalf would come from the stairs, staff in hand with a book in his free hand, the very one he has been writing and keeping notes in for months. However he is headed straight to his room and does not notice them just yet-- The elves may have overestimated his ability to guess future events and he probably is on his own business as he looks pretty worried.

... Or Gandalf may just be polite and pretend to be on his own business and fake not seeing them in order not to bruise Haldir's pride. You may never know with the wizard.

Legolas went quickly with Haldir, remaining at his side and keeping watch on him lest he have second thoughts and attempt to sneak away. He knew that Haldir wouldn't, at this point, but it was still worth the caution. The sudden appearance of a white figure drew his eyes and he gave a small smile before placing a hand on Haldir's shoulder and calling out to the wizard.

"Gandalf! We seek your aid if you've the time."

Gandalf turned when he heard the elvish prince addressing him. And of course, he was together with the march warden, Haldir. Any doubts he may have had about the identity of the 'friend' Legolas was speaking about not a couple days ago were now dissipated. Not that he had all that much doubts to begin with...

"Legolas. Haldir." he said with a smile and shook his head "I always have the time. What is it that you need?"

Legolas raised a hand and set it on top of Haldir's, giving it the very gentlest of squeezes to reassure him. He wanted to wrap an arm around the prideful elf as reassurance but he wouldn't. Not right now. No matter what happened, he'd ensure that Haldir's hands would be healed. Already, several plans had gone through his mind. Some sensible and others foolish.

"At this moment, privacy. This isn't a matter for others to overhear or see." Still acting to protect Haldir's dignity, though it wouldn't suffer now.

Gandalf looked alternatively at the two elves, frowning for a moment. They could probably tell by now that he knew what this was all about by now, but anyways. He nodded slowly, there would be a time later for lectures about how being so prideful is foolish.

"Of course."

He opened the door leading into his room with a move of his staff and walked in. Nothing to be afraid about, the dorm is empty as the kids he shares this dorm with are probably out doing something and risking their lives for whatsoever no reason.

Legolas went quickly into Gandalf's room, staying close to Haldir as worry colored his face. He kept his face turned away from his companion though, not wanting him to worry any more than he had already been. If anyone could heal his hands, it was Gandalf. Once inside though, and the door shut behind the three of them, he tried to relax and remind himself of that fact.

"What little I know in healing is not enough." Legolas said, looking down at the floor. Old as he was, he felt a bit of shame at having neglected to study something so important.

Alas the noble conjurer happened to be equally known for his anger in front of sheer stupidity. This may not have been sheer stupidity, but allowing his hands to get in such a state to protect his pride? Gandalf did not look all that pleased. He looked kind and caring, as was natural considering what befell Haldir. At the same time though he looked angry and annoyed, yes annoyed that he'd let the situation degenerate.

Gandalf certainly could heal his hands, but to such a state it may very well be too late, only time would say. Legolas would see himself spared for this round at least.

"I will do my best, friend. But too much of time may have passed already, i ask you not to expect miracles." he paused "Show me your wounds." Gandalf calmly said, he needed to see after all to do anything.

There were few times in Legolas' life that he'd seen the wizard so cross with another and that had been when Pippin's foolishness had brought the orcs of Moria straight to them. He'd never have expected it directed towards Haldir, though and it almost made him fear for what the march warden may have to hear, whether it being about his hands or how he'd waited so long.

No matter what, though, he'd remain there with Haldir. And he'd find a way to help if Gandalf could not. He'd speak nothing of it though, for fear of being scolded himself.

"..."

Gandalf said no words for a moment, and calmly turned to his trunk; opening it and checking inside to find something. More athelas as a matter of fact, that will have to be used for when the wounds will have been treated.

"How did your hands get in such a state Master Elf, and how many days ago did the feat happen?" Gandalf asked, very calmly and slowly. Nowhere close to the wrath or lecture the Elves may have expected from the wizard. It may actually have been better and more comfortable if Gandalf had outright yelled at Haldir or scolded him. If anything, it was more of a cold wrath. More of a disappointment than anger that could be heard. Should have known better than to allow pride to bring about such an evil.
bow_of_the_galadhrim: (Concern)

[personal profile] bow_of_the_galadhrim 2012-11-14 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Legolas felt a chill along with how Gandalf was handling the situation. Surely he and Haldir would agree than Gandalf openly scolding in regards to what had happened. And it would have been a welcome distraction from the sight of his hands, how they had grown worse and how Legolas truly could no have hoped to heal them.

He almost answered for Haldir but thought it best the march warden answer the wizard, lest they make things any worse for having waited. He could only sit there with Haldir and give him what support he could until they found out the extent of the damage.

Gandalf looked down and sighed when he head 'Weeks now'. It was worse than he had expected, and his healing skills were not quite on par with that of the best healers of Middle-Earth. He took the herbs from the trunk and put them aside on the bed before looking back at Haldir.

"Fool of an Elf!" he said strongly, though not quite angrily "If these wounds do not kill you, your pride certainly will."

Pride, yes. Gandalf was not angry at Haldir getting wounded. Legolas once died, he himself did die at the end of the event, everyone in this tower is meant to come to harm sooner or later. No, the topic of the anger was this pride that had prevented him from seeking help earlier. Yet he slowly took Haldir's hands in his own, closing his hands around his. Haldir may feel a warm, and pain, but that's necessary if he wants Gandalf to try.

Even though Gandalf's outburst was directed towards Haldir, Legolas flinched slightly and reached to touch the elf's shoulder. Heavens, he desired to comfort Haldir in any way he could, even take him pain onto himself if possible.

"I wish you would have come to me sooner, Haldir..." Legolas said, very softly, though he knew Gandalf would hear him. The prince didn't honestly care at the moment. He knew Haldir would have expected Legolas to be careful or to let someone know if he was injured. Never mind that the last injury would have been impossible to hide.

Gandalf heard all of course. He just shook his head and sighed.

"So you decided to give in to your pride and keep it for yourself. The same pride that caused the fall of so many civilizations and individuals who could have been lights for the world." he slowly stated, still holding the hands of of the Elf "All confident in their own abilities yet powerless as they met their end, too late in their attempts to see beyond their pride and to welcome the help that was offered to them."

And a lot more could be said. However, the wizard would not say more on the matter for now. Explaining how Sauron could have been defeated three thousands years ago would a few people have put their pride aside, or how this very same Sauron was ultimately defeated because he was so confident and full of himself. As he held the hand, they probably hurt more, but nothing unbearable. And a light can probably be seen for a few moments.

Legolas wanted, right now, to defend Haldir against Gandalf's words but he couldn't help but admit to himself that elven pride could very well be his downfall here. Many times, in fact, if he didn't let it go soon.

"I find myself worrying more now than I would have if you had only told me sooner. You worry so much for others and yet try so hard to reject help from another." Try to understand his words Haldir, he cares and worries for you. Legolas would have no problem teaching the older elf a lesson, once he was properly healed, about worrying him like this.

Gandalf shook his head, not sounding quite as angry as earlier. It was no use to be angry anyway, he admitted his fault and Haldir was too old of an Elf to be given lengthy lectures.

"It is too late to apologize now, if anything apologize to your own self, for it not us you have endangered."

He slowly lets go of the hands but do not look at them just yet. If Haldir or Legolas were to take a look at them though, they could see they were in a much better state than before. Much better, yet not fully healed. It was far too late for Gandalf to manage and heal them completely.

"Legolas, I'll need bandage." he slowly told to the other Elf, turning to him.

Legolas nodded, both to Haldir and to Gandalf, and took a set a bandages from the pouch he'd carried some of the athelas in earlier. He'd made sure to carry bandages with him since Haldir had first shown him his hands. Quickly they were handed over to the wizard and the elf finally dared a glance at Haldir's hands. They weren't quite as they had once been but they were already on the way to mending.

"I'll collect more bandages later, should anything else happen."

Not to Haldir but in general. Legolas was beginning to act much more cautiously now. With two deaths and an injury already, he wasn't going to go without some way to heal himself or his friends. Especially now.

"Sauron precedes you by an eternity and is more of a foolish being than you will ever be." Gandalf replied to Haldir's word as he used Athelas on Haldir's hands before bandaging them "For that matter I am more of a fool than the two of you together. I am afraid age is not a factor that helps to eradicate these kind of defaults."

He sighed and finished bandaging his hands and nodded. It was all good for now, as long as Haldir wouldn't do anything stupid this shouldn't worsen and heal completely.

"I am not a healer nor am I skilled in these kind of arts. I could not fully heal your hands, but what infection you had is now gone and won't progress. Now only time will completely heal your hands. You will have to change your bandages everyday for at least fourteen days. Clean your hand with the tower's antiseptic and use athelas along with your bandage. In a few weeks then this then will be only a bad memory yet a valuable lessons."

He turned to Legolas.

"Feel free to use whatever means you deem necessary if our friend stops his treatment." this was said on a more jokingly tone "But I believe this won't be necessary." Haldir looked as though he really had gotten the lesson this time.

To hear such an admission from Gandalf was surprising to say the least and Legolas found himself at a loss for words as to how the Maia could possibly be more foolish than the two of them combined. After a moment though, he decided that there were just no words that wouldn't seem foolish themselves.

"I will take very good care of, Haldir." He had no doubts that Haldir would care for his hands much better now after that scare. Even so, he'd make sure that he did and be wary not to cause him any injury while he was still healing. And prove that Haldir was no fool. Merely stubborn. And prideful.

Legolas tried to reach out to grab Haldir before he fled but just missed the sleeve of his clothes. Looking concerned, he gave a look to Gandalf before standing and inclinging his head respectfully.

"Forgive me. Excuse me, Gandalf."

And he was gone after Haldir as quickly as his feet would move him. He had no idea where Haldir had run to but he would find him, one way or another. There were only so many places in this tower that he could hide that weren't dangerous at different times of the day. He was already worried.

"Haldir!"

Legolas checked any rooms passed for the march warden, even stopped anyone that he might pass to ask if they'd seen him but he just continued to move on without much thought after. All that mattered was finding Haldir. He didn't stop looking until he spotted Haldir, standing still on the next floor.

For a moment, he just watched Haldir with relief flooding into his expression. He was alright. He was safe and hadn't found somewhere to hide from the prince. He didn't look hurt but that didn't stop Legolas from quickly approaching him and stepping in front of him to get a good look.

"Haldir... Why did you run?"

The hug surprised him, he hadn't expected it and especially not from Haldir. Not right now. For a moment, he was simply frozen in place before he wrapped his arms back around Haldir and held onto him tightly. Message received, Haldir. Legolas let his eyes fall shut for the duration of the hug and just continued to hug the march warden. His march warden, now.

For all they'd been through together in the tower, it was no wonder that it came to this. There were times he'd have gladly gone back to war than deal with the tower but this made being here worth it.

"Oh, Haldir..." He muttered, very softly.
