I'll place them in some holding cells to cool down. [Jason shrugs.] They've inconvenienced me, and they've broken rules, but they should get a warning first.

*Enoch pauses over the body pile after putting the one he was holding on it, somewhat stunned.

A dungeon stay. That sounded reasonable. ...How strange, for Jason.*

Oh... *He steps back, looking at Jason for a moment as if to try and figure out if he's joking or not.* I expected worse, from you. Thank you. They're foolish, but...most of them acted out of pain and frustration.

We all behave according both to our DNA and what we've been taught. [Jason tilts his head a bit.] While I don't object to working directly with the source, there's something to be said for altering behavior in more mundane ways.

*Enoch had an idea of what he was talking about from context (though he incorrectly assumed "DNA" was a term for a person in some sense of more than the physical), but, ugh, of course he had to say it like that. "Altering behavior". It sounded so cold, so sinister. It wasn't "discipline" or "penance", about retribution for a wrong...

He goes back to helping with the clean up.* When you say "working with the source", you mean the effects of your usual experiments, don't you?

It's something along the same lines as my surgical experiments, except on a more fundamental level.

I see...

*Another body, and another get put on the pile before he follows that up.* Ah...What kind of experiments do you do on the phantoms?

*He's wanted to ask that since Dax told him about it. But he was so angry at him last time there was contact that it simply never happened.*

Ah, the phantoms. [Jason suddenly looks genuinely interested. There's a spark in his eyes that's almost childish in its curiosity.] They're quite interesting. They're not something we bring here intentionally, so their presence at all is of interest. They can't be dissected--no real body--but they can be contained and altered in other ways.

*Enoch notices that. He's seen its like in children, in himself... It's likely dangerous in Jason. It is dangerous in Jason. But...*

You aren't the only one interested in learning more...given the way they arrived. What have you learned?

*Jason may be their only hope, if they really are related to their worlds. To their friends and loved ones. Jason may be the only one capable of learning if they are.*

They're something from the various worlds we draw you all from. [Jason at least seems content with talking about his experiments and their results.] They aren't native to any of them, though--not as far as we've found, at least.

They're not native...

*So they're not native to their worlds...but sound like their friends...*

...But they sound like our friends, and seem to need... *He raises a hand to his collar.* ...That which must secure us here. And they were brought when...when Zo...

*His hand slips down a little, fingers curling into the bottom of his hood.*

...What exactly does Zo do when he rescues us from our worlds?

Unfortunately I can't tell you that. [Jason watches the retrieval units work.] Not only am I prohibited from discussing the process, I don't understand it fully myself.

And Zo is off limits for experiments.

By God's grace... *It's quiet, under his breath. Though he knows God probably can't even see this world, it's better than thinking the only thing protecting Zo from Jason is Ruana.*

I see. *He returns to helping the units out again after following Jason's gaze to them.* ...I wonder how something not native to our worlds sounds like those that are. ...Were.

That's one of their most fascinating properties. I have my theories, but nothing I'll discuss just yet. Not without more research.

...I know you don't think highly of us, but would you tell us, if you do learn? We do live with them up here, too, after all.
