And when the cherry's ripe with blossoms
Characters: Archer (
swordedpast) and OPEN.
Setting: All through today, floors 97, 60, and 1, as well as the stairs.
Format: Tagger's choice.
Summary: In a month without any proper food other than nutrition bars, Archer follows the trend and makes his own for Rin by slaughtering and cooking a giant bullfairy.
Warnings: Blood and gore from the poor monster. Nothing else so far.
[ floor 97 ]
[ It's always a risk going out onto the ninety-seventh floor. Of course, it's easy enough to hide from monsters when you're so small as to be insignificant to them in comparison, but when you go out there already prepared to fight, with no powers to back it up...
Archer's taking precautions, of course. He projects his familiar twin swords before stepping off the stairs, and he stays in the shadows until he finds what he's looking for: one of the mangled bullfairy creatures, struggling weakly to fly, snapping bones whenever it fails and lands on its pitiful legs. If Archer were a fair fighter or a warrior with honor, he'd probably feel bad about taking it on, even though it's three times his size. Fortunately, he doesn't truck with any of that nonsense, so as soon as the way is clear of any bigger, nastier beasts, he sets on the struggling bullfairy with his swords flashing.
It takes longer than it should to kill the creature, not just because of its size and the lack of supernatural powers on this floor, but because Archer has to keep dodging away and leaving it bleeding pitifully whenever it looks like something more dangerous might be approaching. In the end, it expires not from any single mortal wound, but from the combination of several lesser ones and blood loss.
And then, without any change in his blase expression, Archer begins to dismember it. ]
[ stairs/elevator ]
[ There's no kitchen on the ninety-seventh floor, and even if there were, it would be really inconvenient due to all the giant monsters lumbering around. As a result, once the bullfairy has been messily slaughtered and pulled to pieces, the task remains of bringing it to the sixtieth floor. Fortunately, both this floor and the one Archer aims to reach are not far from an elevator stop, so it's not nearly as difficult a task as it could have been.
Still, it does result in great trails of blood and gore all over the stairs and elevator as Archer makes multiple trips carrying chunks of freshly dead monster to the kitchen. Given how helpful the worker units have been in the past few days, he might feel the slightest pang of guilt over leaving this much for them (and anyone with the wrong job) to clean up. Maybe. But he's good at ignoring pangs like that. ]
[ floor 60 ]
[ To be honest, Archer isn't that familiar with cooking quite this much from scratch. He's gotten some practice a few times before here in the tower, but it's still something he's working on. So the process of him pulling apart the great pieces of dismembered bullfairy to find edible meat, fat that can be used to fry the meat or add to soup stock, and bones that can be boiled for soup is somewhat messier than it has to be. And it does have to be pretty messy from the start.
Eventually, though, he settles down into the rhythm of cooking: stirring wild vegetables and herbs gathered from various garden-like floors (but not the poisonous greenhouse; he's not stupid about these things) into a pot full of slowly cooking soup or a pan full of thinly-sliced meat, watching over the pots and pans in question, and--in between all of that--occasionally pausing to clean up a bit.
Yes, he's wearing an apron. It's not as if he cares about getting blood, guts, and other cooking materials on his clothes, since he can just materialize those at will as a Servant, but cooking without an apron is improper in a way that he just can't ignore. ]
[ floor 1 ]
[ The resulting meals will feed Rin for several days, but there's still plenty left. And wasting food is just unacceptable. But Archer can't let people know that he's giving away food. That would totally ruin his image. What is he to do?
Answer: haul the remaining food down to the cafeteria as quickly as possible and leave out pots of soup and trays of beef fried with wild vegetables, then disappear into spirit form as soon as he can. No one will catch him being nice like that, will they? Surely not. ]

Aha, that's your true identity isn't it? You're truly a servant. [ Humming in thought. ] Pholoe sounds like one that would suit you, yeah? Tell me, are you any good at tailoring? My clothing is always fixed and my skirts have been hemmed back up recently.
You know, the servant of Sergestus?
no subject
[ Alarmed or not, he doesn't let it stop him from stirring the soup. ]
You could say I truly serve the people...but if you want an excuse to call me a cretin, look elsewhere. And stop getting your clothing in need of mending.

[ Twirling around on her toes with her hands still out, she's actually in a fairly good mood. Getting to have food when all else eat crappy bars does make her feel like a queen.
There's a stumble and she catches herself before there's any imminent harm brought upon her. ]
I asked if you're any good at tailoring. I'd like for you to help me make new clothes if so. I wear the same four outfits every four days, Archer. It is only obvious they would wear out much quicker than they should.
no subject
I can mend clothes, but making new ones...
[ He won't back down from this challenge. After a moment, he simply nods. ]
I'll do it for you, Rin.
[ And thus begins Archer's quest to learn dressmaking. ]

[ A rare offer to be more of a partner than a servant. ] If you don't get upset with me for giving you this opportunity, that is. If that's alright with you, then we'll start right away.
Er, well once you're done baking.
no subject
[ He quibbles over trivialities because he's pleased with her offer. That's how he works. ]
I'm not upset, though.
no subject
[ She knows it isn't, but there's something to enjoy with Archer's reaction to the wrong terms. ]
no subject
Baking is for things like breads and cakes. It uses a dry heat. Since this is beef soup and fried steak and vegetables, it's got nothing to do with baking. You should know the difference, Rin; it's hardly difficult.
no subject
[ Cupping her hands in front of her chest to imply what exactly the differences between male and female aprons might be. ]
no subject
[ As if that answered the question completely. He looks almost mortally offended by her suggestions. ]
Don't make uncouth gestures when I'm tending to your meals, Rin.
no subject
[ Howling with laughter. ]
no subject
[ He probably shouldn't have asked that. ]
no subject
Yes, yes you do. [ The most grateful master in the world. ]
no subject
[ All the while, though, even as he huffs, he tends to the soup. ]
no subject
[ The most mature Master. It is her. ]
no subject
[ So far she's only said that it's feminine. That's not the same thing as cute. ]
You've got weird taste, Rin.
no subject
[ Now she's regretting saying that now as she shifts uncomfortably before him. ]
I guess that makes me a weird person.
no subject
It doesn't matter, you know. If you've got weird taste. So long as you like the food I make you.
no subject
[ Relief floods her face as she gives him a partial smile. ]
I do enjoy the food, Archer. I'm lucky to have a Servant like you.
no subject
You're most certainly lucky, but I'm also the Servant you deserve, so don't think luck is the only factor.
no subject
[ Welp, now she's done it. She used the h-word to describe Archer. ]
no subject
He could tell her: he's only the worst sort of hero possible. It's not something he could ever have told Rin Tohsaka, not deliberately, but this is Rin Matou, and she's a little broken like him.
Or he could tell her: of course she deserves a hero. She has survived untold darkness and kept some scrap of her kind heart about her, so she deserves nothing more than a hero who will finally rescue her. ]
...
[ He keeps stirring the soup. ]
Don't overestimate the value of heroes, Rin.
no subject
[ What a confident phrase. There's no mistaking the smile she carries with her as she looks him over. ]
Unless you're going to tell me you're not a hero. I'll laugh then. What kind of Servant are you if not a heroic one?
no subject
So what comes out of his mouth instead is this. ]
Of course I'm some sort of hero. And for you, I'm the best kind of hero, so it's impossible to overestimate the value of having me at your side. It's not because I'm a hero, though. It's because I'm your hero. Remember that.
no subject
[ The girl who's never relied on anyone now suddenly has someone who want her to? The thought startles her, but instead of being frightened by the prospect, she's actually encouraged to believe in it. ]
Yeah, that's right! You're my hero, Archer!
