Summary: Shinji has emotions and passive-aggressively plays video games
Warnings: Shinji having no idea how to cope with feelings, will add anything else that comes up

[Room 2-06]
[The video game Shinji receives is a good one. He's fond of it. Maybe not his favorite, but it would certainly rank within his top ten, if someone forced him to sit down and make a list. Under any other circumstance, he would be all but overjoyed to receive it.]

[Now, though, all he can think is, That's it?]

[In his anger, and with his usual childish level of restraint, he raises an arm and chucks the game, still in its case, down at the floor. He isn't particularly strong, but the force combined with the angle as it hits the floor is enough to make the case crack at the top corner and along its spine.]

[...But that's it. He doesn't throw a full-blown tantrum, like the time that Rider left. Instead, he merely stares in silence at the video game where it has settled on the floor, a second or two passing before he moves to pick it up again, checking to be sure that it is otherwise undamaged and sitting properly in its case.]

[Floor 96]
[Shinji hasn't actually set foot onto the floor proper yet, lingering on the stairs. The video game he received earlier is tucked under one arm. Evidently having drifted off into his own little world of thought, he isn't paying particular attention to his surroundings, his expression blank as he mulls things over.]

[He's heard what will happen if he steps onto this floor, and where the thought of losing his memories normally unsettles him, it almost appeals to him in this moment. He can remember being restrained, and having people standing over him, and the horror of being conscious but unable to control his own body. He'd rather not be able to, so here he stands, weighing the pros and cons.]

[Floor 14]
[And, because this is a Shinji post, he can at some point be found irritably and passive-aggressively playing his "new" video game in the media room. It isn't actually making him feel much better.]

[Terse as the answer is, it's honest. He doesn't need anything. He's also not in the most communicative mood. He gazes flatly at Shinji now that the game is paused.]

[Shinji meets that answer with a put-upon sigh.]

Then why are you just standing there?

I was watching.

[And it almost seems like he isn't going to add anything else, until:]

I have never played one of these games. [The idea of sitting down and playing games hasn't occurred to him, when he could be out killing real monsters.]

Yeah, well, that's your problem. You could have played anything here anytime you wanted.

[He nearly leaves it at that as well, but he belatedly adds, less belligerently:]

This one is from my home.

Yes. I prefer to fight.

[He's more curious about what Shinji's doing than eager to play himself. Shinji interests him, in part because they're about the same age.

Also, killing actual things is probably way more fun.]

Did they give it to you? They gave me something, too.

Yeah, they did. [He scowls.] What'd they give you?

[And is it a better consolation prize?]

I don't know why they gave us gifts.

A fire Materia. [And because Sephiroth is sure Shinji doesn't know what Materia is, as no one else seems to, he turns to conjure a small fireball in the middle of the media room. It bursts quickly into existence and then just as quickly fades. His control of the fire is such that nothing is even so much as slightly charred as a result, and, his illustration complete, he turns back to Shinji.]

Did they, you know... Did they do that stuff to you, too?

[He can't manage to phrase his question as something more explicit than that. He figures that Sephiroth should know what he means, if they did.]

[It's a good thing that Sephiroth sees fit to answer Shinji's question before he can ask it, but the suddenly appearing fireball makes Shinji jump. He scowls and flushes, but he doesn't care enough about his wounded pride at the moment to snap over it.]

Oh. That's nice for you, I guess.

Yes. I was experimented on.

[Sephiroth doesn't look pleased about it. For a moment, an expression flickers in his eyes that might be anger, but it's just as quickly gone.

He does brighten slightly when thinking about his Materia. Weapons cheer him up.]

I do like offensive magic. It is helpful when fighting monsters. [And it works for setting random things on fire, too.] Do you enjoy your game?

Do you think they meant it as some kind of crappy consolation prize?

[He scoffs a little when Sephiroth says offensive magic is helpful for fighting, since it's a statement of the obvious, but the sound is half-hearted. He actually seems a little taken aback by the question of whether or not he enjoys his game.]

Well, yeah. I like it a lot. It's just... I'm pretty sure I earned at least ten video games, after what they did.

[So, he can't help but feel dissatisfied anyway.]

Maybe. Maybe they would like us to be more content and they believe a gift will make us calmer.

[Sephiroth doesn't seem to mind Shinji's scoffing.]

Before, all my magic was defensive, and I prefer offensive spells. It is never good to rely on magic, but I like to use it.

[He nods.]

No, it is not sufficient.

[Even if Fire Materia is cool.]

Yeah, that's what I figured. But, I mean— If they think we're going to be bought off after a stunt like that, they've got another thing coming.

[He has no problem including other people in that statement. After all, who would forgive what had happened for a mere trinket?]

[Setting the game controller aside, he leans over the arm of the couch he is sitting on, propping his face in his hands.]

So Materia lets you use different kinds of magic? What else have you got?

Yes. We should do something.

[Sephiroth wishes there were some way he could fight back. If he could attack the administrators, then he would.]

Materia are objects that allow humans to manipulate the natural world.

[He lists off his Materia easily:]

Time, Exit, Revive, Restore, Heal, Seal, Barrier.

I'm not sure what we can do. [His expression turns more pensive as he thinks the question over. He isn't much good for combat, of course, but Lancer did suggest the idea of using his abilities to manipulate the machines here, so maybe...]

...Some of those sound kind of redundant.

[But, really, what does he know? It isn't like he comes from a universe where affecting the world with magic is simple. He frowns a little.]

I do not know. [Sephiroth considers it as well.] There must be something we can do, or they would not need to get information from us. They are worried.

[Which means they aren't invulnerable.]

Revive and Restore are similar. Both heal injuries, but Restore is for fatal wounds. Heal cures poisoning. Seal casts Sleep or Silence. Time casts Haste, Slow, or Stop. Barrier creates barriers to protect against physical and magical attacks. Exit allows you to escape from any battle.

They would not be my first choices. I was not allowed offensive Materia in my world. [Maybe this is because he tried to destroy the world a couple times, just a guess. Not that he knows that.]

[There are probably a number of insightful, useful things Shinji could say in reply to this information. He could bring up the idea of trying to crack into whatever systems control the Tower, or he could try to strategize using the Materia Sephiroth has on hand.]

[Instead, he asks,] Are you literally from an RPG?

[He almost sounds offended in his incredulity.]

[Yes. Yes, he is. He's the final boss and everything.]

What is an RPG?

[That is the exact reply he expected, so he ignores it.]

Never mind. Look, I'm not any good for combat, but I can use my magic circuits to hack into electronics. Do you want to see if we can break into anything that way?

[When Shinji doesn't answer his question, Sephiroth doesn't press.]

Yes. I would like to do that. [He wants to do something.] I am trained in stealth as well as combat.

I would like to kill them.

Okay, then we will. [He's a little unsettled by Sephiroth just out-and-out saying he wants to kill them, but he doesn't know what else he was expecting, so he says nothing about it. He certainly sees no reason to argue.] I don't think anyone is going to stop you.

No, they are all our enemies.

[Enemies should be killed.]

We should not tell others about our plan, or we will risk being compromised. No one will expect our attack.

[He considers Sephiroth's words for a second, and then he nods. It's not like he has anyone to tell, now that Rider is gone. Speaking to Lancelot would only run the risk of it getting back to Kariya, and they certainly didn't need that busybody knowing.]

Right. So, when do we strike?

Soon. We must first investigate what you can hack into.

We probably shouldn't let much time pass between figuring that out and acting, right? I mean, it's not like I don't know how to cover my tracks, but as long as we're playing it safe.

Yes, we should act as soon as possible afterward, because we don't know how long we will have before we are discovered, and we do not want to give them time to prepare.

I am always ready to fight.
