Summary: Kachessa receives a package in her mailbox. The contents lead to quite a scene.
Warnings: Infant death

[Receiving a package is not what she expected. Not at all. So she opens it the second she pulls it from her mailbox. And it takes all her strength to not drop it when she sees what's in it. She... No. No. Kachessa drops to her knees, removing the body of her son from the box delicately. A scream of pure anguish is ripped from her throat as she doubles over. The infant's body is in her arms, and she's sobbing like crazy over it. It would be hard to get him away from her, but she'll remain there sobbing for the time being.]

[Yotsuba had made it a habit to always wander into the mailroom and check her mailbox while speaking with any mailmen she saw. However, when she wandered into the mailroom, she just stopped out of fear and surprise.

There was a woman holding a baby and crying over it. While Yotsuba had been to a funeral before in her world, she didn't really know much about it, and she had never seen a dead baby or something dead that hadn't been burnt or ripped to shreds, so she just through the baby was asleep for the moment. Trying to be brave, Yotsuba approached the woman, her smile gone, replaced by a look of fear, confusion, and worry.]

Why are you crying? Is he having a bad dream? Maybe if we got him some clothes he would sleep better..

[A child. How can she tell a child...? She's still sobbing, but... She has to be strong for this little one.]

H... He's not going to wake up. It's all right. We... Don't need to worry about clothes for him.

[Isn't that a peaceful way to explain death? Sleeping forever? It certainly looks like Rook is sleeping.]

[Oh..was her baby..dead then? Yotsuba looked pretty sad and puzzled as she tried to pat the woman on the head or shoulder.]

Okay..but we should bury him then. And chant so that he can reincarnate easier!

...Bury him...? Is there somewhere I can...?

[She's not going to mention she's not very religious. She appreciates what the little girl is doing for her. Putting Rook to rest will... Be very helpful for her.[

[That's alright. Yotsuba didn't know what religion was. She just thought that there was still a God and Heaven here and that everything worked in the same way it did back home. At the question, Yotsuba smiled a little and nodded.]

Yeah! There's a huuge meadow here! And a graveyard!

...The graveyard. That... That seems more proper.

[She'll... Remove her vest and wrap the infant in it before tucking him back into the box and taking it up.]

...Thank you.

Okay! You're welcome! Follow Yotsuba so that you don't get lost!

[And, with that, Yotsuba would run to the stairs, waiting for the woman to keep up with her. She was trying to act older for the event, but..not doing a very good job of remaining solemn.]

]Kachessa will nod and follow the girl, holding the package carefully. It'll... Have to be his casket. She doesn't have anything else, but yes, she'll follow the girl. Her energy is... Welcome, and she'll smile a bit sadly.]

[Yotsuba, for better or worse, didn't know what a casket was, but if Kachessa managed to bring the idea up, she would suggest making one in the workshop. As the woman followed her, Yotsuba would keep running down the stairs, pausing every few minutes to make sure she didn't fall behind or that a monster wasn't about to get them. While it would be a long run, they would eventually reach the graveyard floor, and Yotsuba would present it with a wave of her hand.]

Here we are! We can bury him here!

[Unfortunately, Kachessa doesn't have the skill for that in the first place, so this will have to do. When she arrives there with Yotsuba, she'll look around.]

...I'll need something to mark his grave with... Even if it's just something simple for now.

[At that, Yotsuba nodded, thinking.]

Oh! There's some wood in the workshop! Yotsuba can get some and mark it with my crayons! Will that be okay?

Would you be so kind as to get me some? Just enough wood to make a cross. And don't worry, I can carve his name into it. I'll... Dig his grave while you do that.

[Kachessa will smile a bit before seeking out a clear space to begin digging, setting the box down while she does so.]

[While Yotsuba wouldn't have a problem with fetching wood normally, there was one part of that request that made her keep following the woman as she wandered off and started to dig.]

Okay..but..what's a cross?

[Chessa will draw one in the dirt with her finger.]

It's not hard to make. I just need the top portion, where his name will go, to be wide enough. Is that something you can do?

It is! Yotsuba just didn't know what a cross was, that's all!

[And with that, she would run off, returning a few minutes later with two long pieces of wood and a rope so that they could make the cross. When she reached the woman again, she would present the items to her, smiling.]

Here you are! We can mark his grave with this!

[By the time Yotsuba returns, Kachessa has already placed the package with her son in it in the ground, and is burying it. She'll smile.]

Thank you, Yotsuba. I don't believe I introduced myself. I'm Kachessa Crim.

[She'll finish burying the infant and then set to tying the cross together. And once that is done, she'll take the golden key from around her neck and squeeze it. It transforms into a knife, and from there, Kachessa carves a simple name into the cross: Rook Crim. It's erected to mark the grave and then she'll sit back, wiping away the next wave of tears.]

...A mother shouldn't have to bury her child.

[Normally, Yotsuba would introduce herself immediately, but she couldn't help but watch in amazement as the key around her neck turned into a knife. As Kachessa cried, Yotsuba would try to hug her, but she would also ask a lot of questions while smiling happily.]

I'm Yotsuba Koiwai! And why can't a Mommy bury her child? That way, he can rest a bit better, since you're there in his..um..final moments! And..why did your key turn into a knife? Is it a gift from Heaven too?!

[Kachessa will... return that hug. It's nice, and she needs it.]

...A mother should see her child grow into a strong adult. He should have lived to bury me, not the other way around. He... Was only an infant. I wish I could have seen him grown.

[She will... Tuck the key back under her shirt.]

...As for the key, it's... It was a gift to me. Given by a sorceress who said I would need it. It is... I wouldn't say it's a gift from Heaven, though.

That would have been nice..but then he would have been able to be with you in your final moments! It's just the opposite here..but we can try and help him reincarnate! Maybe there's still a Heaven here!

[..Yotsuba..no.]

It was good that the sorceress gave you that key though! It's awesome!

...I don't believe in Heaven. Not after the things I've seen.

[But she... Appreciates the optimism of the child. After a few more moments, she will stand and begin to leave. Rook is buried, and she... Needs to sort out where to go from here, emotionally.]

[Sadly, while the sight of a dead child was sad, she didn't quite understand why she didn't believe in Heaven. If she didn't know, she would have asked, but it seemed that she did know and didn't think it existed. Normally, she would have run off and asked, but she had to help in her own way. So, clapping her hands and looking very sad and confused, she started to speak.]

Um..Na..Namu, A..Amida, Butsu!

[And, after that, if the woman hadn't run off yet, Yotsuba would try to catch up.]

Why not? A lot of bad things happen here, but it still exists! Encoh's lived in it and Luci's an Angel, so it does!

[Sola-ui is descending down the stairs when she catches sight of the woman crying in the mail room.]

...Excuse me. What are you crying over?

[Kachessa won't say a word. Instead, she'll continue crying and... Turn. So that the unmoving infant is seen. It's... Better than words.]

[As soon as Sola-ui sees the infant, she slaps a hand over her mouth and barely keeps from being sick. Tears flood her eyes. A dead infant is horrifying and disgusting and sad, but what sort of sick person sends it in a package? To a woman who might be its mother?]

[She can't even utter any condolences. The only sound she makes it a whimper. And she's just looking at the child who isn't even hers. She is a mother. She understands.]

[Kachessa is his mother. And she's cradling him so gently, despite knowing he's dead.]

...Why would anyone...?

I don't know.

[She whispers.]

Such a horrible thing...

I... I don't know what to do. I can't... I can't leave him here, but...

[...But putting him in her trunk would be cruel and cold. But what else can she do? She's so lost, and she's hurting so much.]

Hey, are you okay!? I heard someone scream.

[ Ishtar ran as fast as she could to approach the stranger. She heard someone scream bloody murder and ran as fast as she could to get to this location. She didn't even know that the person was cradling a baby. ]

[Kachessa is going to remain cradling her son, sobbing over him.]

He's... He-- Why? Why did they...?

[Her heart is aching. To be given her infant son's corpse... Really, why would they do that? This is too cruel.]

What happened, did they do something to your baby?!

[ She noticed that she was cradling a bundle, so she assumed it was a baby. ]

I can't believe those sick bastards. Is he still breathing, lemme see if I can heal him!

...No. No, he's... He's gone. I... I don't... I don't know what to do or why they did this, I...

[She's going to be in tears for awhile as she holds her infant son. She... She needs to do something, she's hysterical and not thinking right.]

What do you...mean?! You mean they just-- that's horrible! Those assholes!

[ Ishtar shouted loudly, pissed. How could they do that to someone's remains, someone's corpse!!!? Ishtar took a breath and slowly tries he best not to be too distressed since the person was already upset as is. Ishtar pats her shoulders softly giving her a worried look. ]

Should we...maybe put him to rest then?

[Prussia happened to be checking his mailbox at the same time. What he found made him gasp, but his horror paled in comparison to the scream coming from further down the mailroom. He runs to Kachessa, his defiled nest still in his hand.]

Hey, are you-

[Then he sees the child. It's not entirely an unfamiliar sight to him. He has seen plenty of children (babies, even) die in his time, from starvation, plagues, even bloody deaths from marauders. Some people had no mercy, and it seemed that someone in the tower was one of them.]

Oh my god. I'm sorry. [He backs away slightly.]

Why...? Why would they do this!?

[An infant. And to give that infant's corpse to his mother. Is that supposed to be comfort? Is it!? Kachessa doesn't know. She can't tell how he died, just that it's Rook. She'd know him anywhere.]

I can't answer for the administrators. I don't know what kind of twisted ideas they have. This is just going too far, though.

[Prussia covers the nest in his hand so that Kachessa doesn't have to see any more dead things. As much as he wants to make a comparison and say he lost some sort-of children too, nothing can compare to the horror of a dead baby in a mailbox.]

I'm, um, headed to the graveyard. It's probably too soon, but... would you like to come with me?

...No, he... I should bury him so he can rest.

[She will stand quietly, tucking the infant back into the package after wrapping him in her vest. It will... Have to do for a casket, she feels.]

...Thank you. For... Inviting me. I don't want to go alone right now.

You're welcome. I think I can understand. Going alone, you have all those thoughts going around your head... it's not really healthy.

[Prussia begins to head towards the stairs.]

Follow me. I think the hardest part will be finding a shovel when we get there...

...All right...

[She's mostly quiet as she follows, because even if she's with someone, the thoughts won't stop. All the questioning why and what happened to him. There's not even a mark on him...]

...I've heard there's an effort to restore the worlds... Do you think, if we do, he might...?

[Oh, no. That is not a question Prussia wanted to hear. He has absolutely no idea. Should he try to console her, or tell her the truth? ...Well, he's an honest guy, so the truth is what he'll do.]
