Summary: Axel and Roxas need to catch up. Roxas' mind is a bit of a mess.
Warnings: Probably none.

[Arriving in the tower has done absolutely nothing for Roxas' state of mind. After meeting Xion and catching a breather for himself, he finds himself in his dorm room alone.

It's bad enough really, what he had encountered before arriving. He's still reeling from meeting DiZ and getting all of his memories back in a sudden rush. What was he supposed to do with that? His memories were interlaced with the implanted ones and the ones he made with Olette, Pence and Hayner. At least, the ones he had met.

Part of him was frustrated. He'd seen Sora, he was sure of it, but what was this tower? Did DiZ trick him somehow? Xion's explanations were good, but it's hard to say if any of it was real. He'd thought everything was real before this moment and now...Roxas isn't sure. He doesn't feel complete either, he's sure this isn't what Namine meant.]

[It is like this, lying in his bed lost in thought, that Axel finds him.]

[Roxas sits up and leans forward, his elbows on his knees.]

Axel. I know you don't know the same stuff but...I'm sorry that we were fighting. I'm a little glad you don't remember because we might have to fight again.

[Right to the point, isn't he? If Axel weren't so accustomed to it, he might be taken aback. As it is, he just turns his gaze back to Roxas, the silly expression now gone.]

Little unfair, don't you think? Deciding we're gonna fight when I don't know the problem?

I don't want to fight you! I mean...not right now. Sort of. In the future for you we fight because I have to be eliminated.

[He pauses, he's trying to remember why that is.]

You were going to eliminate me. I guess Saix said you had to.

[Wait. What?]

What?

[Excuse the tone, Roxas. The thought of his best friend having to be eliminated is unthinkable enough, but him getting the orders? And Saïx ordering it? That sounds too nightmarish to ever become a reality.]

I don't know if it was Saix but yeah. We had a fight I think and then I left. I wanted to...

[He trails off. Why did he leave again?]

I had to find Sora, I think. I'm not sure, but you came after me to take me back, but they wanted to eliminate me. I didn't want to go back, and so we had to fight because if I didn't go back then...

I don't remember all the details right now. I had, there's some things that happened to me. With my memories.

[Seems like a hell of a lot happened to his memories. How Roxas can't remember Xion is still something that Axel doesn't get. Xion said that something happens that causes everyone to forget about her. But how could Roxas forget one of his best friends? His mind returns to Naminé: could she have anything to do with this?

[As for everything else....]

You went after Sora....

[He sighs and scratches the back of his head. On second thought, maybe it's better to not open that can of worms just yet.]

Do you know what happened? To your memories?

[Roxas' brow furrows a bit as he thinks about it.]

I'm not sure entirely what happened to me. I didn't have any memories of you or Xion or anyone except Olette, Pence and Hayner. We were on summer break, seven days, right? [He smiles at Axel, although a little uneasy.]

Then I met you again, but I didn't know you because of my memories being gone. But when I went to the castle and saw Namine, after that I found the computer I think it was? I found it and my memories came back all at once but I'm...I don't know. Things aren't that great yet. I'm a little confused.

That makes two of us.

[The vast majority of what Roxas is saying makes little to no sense. (Who are Olette, Pence, and Hayner, anyway?) But other things....

[A castle. And that girl.]

You mentioned Naminé.

Yeah, Naminé. She's a girl that I was talking to. I saw her and I don't know, I thought she was important, I think. She talked to me in my head. [He taps his forehead.]

I talked to another girl too. I fell off the clock tower, but I woke up in bed. I think that was a dream though. But I saw Naminé. She got taken away, DiZ took her away. I think.

[His memories are there, but it's almost scrambled. Roxas stumbles a little over his words, sounding uncertain.]

Hey, take it easy.

[He reaches out to pat Roxas on the back, as though something physical will help ground his friend in his confusion.]

You were talking to Naminé, and DiZ took her away, right?

[His tone is gentle, even as his mind begins sorting through the jagged pieces.

[DiZ ... the mystery man from Castle Oblivion. Where does he fit in?]

Do you remember where this happened?

[Roxas has to think for a minute. He does feel a little better with the touch, and he sucks on his bottom lip.]

Yeah, it was the big house just outside of Twilight Town. There were some woods there, and then a really big house. Naminé was upstairs I think, but he was downstairs. You were downstairs too. Where Sora was sleeping.

[Well, there goes his working theory. But at least he's getting a clearer picture of the elements involved.

[Sora's name again. Sleeping, just as he was left.]

What happened then?

I got really mad and broke the computer. Then we fought and I...

[Roxas pauses a moment.] I won, but it was really close, I know and you, we said we'd meet in the next life. I thought this was here, but now I'm not so sure. I thought I really hurt you.

[He sighs again.] I tried to attack DiZ but he wasn't really there. My keyblades went right through him, and I saw Sora and that's it. I woke up here. I thought I was going to join him, but I don't think that happened. I still feel like a Nobody.

[Join Sora. Roxas was trying to join Sora.

[Something twists inside, and Axel turns his head away. He doesn't know what it is. He shouldn't be feeling anything.

[This illusion of humanity....

[It's unbelievable, what Roxas is saying. Axel doesn't understand how things could get to such a point. Weren't the three of them best friends? Inseparable? What could drive Roxas to want to join Sora?]

... Sounds like you've had quite a time.

[He's still not looking at his friend, choosing instead to focus on a far wall.

[He knows the players, but not the plot. He knows the ending, but not the beginning. What actually happened to his friend...?]

[Even telling the story it does sound incredible, but there are a few facts that Roxas is sure of. He knows he wanted to join Sora and free Kingdom Hearts, but he can't remember for the life of him why that was, aside from the fact he was going to be eliminated.]

I think so. It's hard to remember.

[Not having a heart, not having Sora's memories and having his own manipulated and muddled to a degree makes things harder then they used to be. He's sure there's a time where he did remember things much more clearly, however, this has changed. Roxas can feel he's changed a little bit, at least where his memory is concerned.]

[Axel isn't looking at him and that is unnerving. He hangs his head a bit.]

Are you...are you mad at me?

Mad?

[He laughs — quick and forced — and turns to face Roxas with a little smirk firmly in place.]

Come on, man. How could I be mad?

[The teasing does nothing to alleviate the painful sensation in his chest. He abandons it quickly and rubs the back of his head.]

It's just confusing, is all. All this stuff happened to you, and I can't figure it out.

Okay. [Roxas nods, satisfied that Axel isn't mad at him for fighting and winning their fight.]

I'm confused too. It's not just you. But you're really smart, I know you can figure it out if you try.

Yeah....

[He doesn't really have any other choice, does he? Confusing as it may be, he has to work this out. How else can he help his friend?]

If you remember anything else, make sure you let me know. Got it memorized?

I got it memorized!

[Roxas repeats this with a smile, because he remembers teasing Axel about it from time to time, but really without him saying that, he'd be even more confused and muddled.]

Can you tell me more about Xion?

About Xion?

[He pauses for a moment, trying to think of something to tell. It's strange: Roxas became friends with the girl long before Axel did. They had so much in common that Roxas probably knew her better.

[Well. Roxas didn't know that one thing: the truth about her origin. But he can't tell that.

[... Of course, now it's the only thing that comes to mind.]

Yeah, sure. What do you wanna know?

Well tell me who she is. What is she like? What does she do in the Organization? Tell me everything!

[He laughs.]

Woah, slow down. One question at a time.

[Now, where to start with all that.... He scratches his head.]

She joined the Organization right after you did. Number XIV. Wields a Keyblade, same as you. She's....

[He pauses. Is it even possible to sum Xion up in just a few words?]

... She's our best friend. The three of us are inseparable.

Right, she said that. Our best friend. I memorized it.

[He smiles a little bit.]

I feel bad for forgetting here. In here. [He puts his hand to his chest.] Because I should remember my best friend. But we can still be best friends right? Even if I don't remember?

["As long as we remember each other, we'll never be apart. Got it memorized?"

[His own words, coming back to ring in his head.]

That's right. Just give it a little time. It'll come back to ya.

[Roxas nods, smiling a bit, feeling a little comforted.]

I hope so. I want to remember my friends.

You will. We'll figure this thing out.

[He hopes....]

Axel, what do we do now? This place is kind of weird. How do we get out of here?

Not sure yet. The way it sounds, this might be an extended vacation.

I don't like that. Sora was...

[Roxas pauses.]

Xion said Sora's here too right? But I'm still here. Does that mean I have a heart now? I don't feel any different.

[Sora again....]

Hmm? What're you talking about?

I was going to join up with Sora. I thought I was going to disappear, but then I showed up here, and Sora's here too. He's not sleeping. If we're both awake, am I supposed to have a heart now?

[Roxas' point in time is a little different from Axel's and it's hard to say what he means. He's not entirely sure. Namine said he'd feel different, but he doesn't seem to. Maybe he should ask Sora. He does want to meet him...]

[For Axel, getting the end of the story while missing the middle really isn't helping him out. Even with the end picture, it's impossible to finish a puzzle with only half the pieces.]

Roxas, what does Sora have to do with you getting a heart?

[From the sound of it, Roxas thinks the two are connected. Joining with Sora....]

[Roxas has to think about it, blinking a few times.]

Naminé said that I wasn't ever supposed to exist and for Sora to be whole again, he needs me.

[It's still a little upsetting, and he balls his hands into fists.]

I don't know how she can say that. I got mad at her but she said I'm only half a person and Sora is the other half. I'll be whole.

[So, that's what Naminé was talking to him about. That aspect of this picture, at least, has become a bit clearer.

[With forced nonchalance, he says:]

Well, I dunno about that. Sora's here, and he's just fine. And you're fine, too. Y'know, aside from a few little memory things.

[He looks up at Axel. That's right, Sora's already here and awake. How could that happen?]

So, I guess I can exist right?

[As Nobodies, they were never supposed to exist in the first place. But how can he remind Roxas of that, when his best friend is asking him whether or not he can continue to exist?]

Yeah, you can exist.

That's what I want. I want to keep existing.

[He nods a bit and grins at Axel.]

We just have to find a way to go home, right?

That's right. [He smiles back.] Don't sweat it too much. Right now, just look at this like some well-deserved time off.
