[Gilles stares at Judas intently, leaning in closer. He's fascinated. Of course, it all makes sense now, but he'd never stopped to really think about it before. He's never met a Jewish person before (to his knowledge), since they were all cast out of France.]

Yes, you are, are you not? It is very different, Judas.

That seems to be what I remember, yes.

[He smiles.]

What is it like, then?

[Gilles frowns. This is perplexing, because the things he has heard the Church say about Jewish people are not necessarily pleasant. And yet, Judas is his friend.

The Church doesn't care for Gilles either, but Gilles is a murderer! Judas is very gentle and kind. Although... also a terrible sinner like he is.]

I am afraid... Jews and Christians do not get along, where I am from!

[He says this as if it's wrenched from him against his will.]

[How to explain centuries of conflict, when Gilles himself doesn't fully understand it?]

My friend, it is because we do not agree on matters of religion! They are said to be bad for society, for the economy. In France, they were cast out. Their faith is different and they are different, and they are scorned. The Jews do not see Christ as the Savior. Because they--

[He breaks off, as something else seems to occur to him. He seems genuinely distressed.]

Oh...I see...but that shouldn't necessarily mean much for the two groups as people, should it? There's nothing wrong with either fundamentally.

['Christ' isn't a name he recognises. He remembers Jesus again, but he was never called Christ in his time.]

I do not know! The Church condemns them, but they condemn many things.

[The Church is harsh, though he accepts that it was right about him.]

But the people hate them too...

[Gilles is confused. Judas should know about this, shouldn't he? If he doesn't, then--why not?]

Nothing, nothing! They've done nothing.

[Gilles, reacting maturely, buries his head in his hands. When he speaks again, his voice is muffled by his hands in his face. Not being very good at keeping secrets, he seems to contradict his words from moments before.]

Do you not remember, Judas?

No, is it something I should remember? It might have come after my time. I did miss out on a lot.

[Wait, why did he miss out on a lot? He feels like there's a reason other than being from the past - because actually, he was living in 2000-something, wasn't he? So there must have been a reason for that gap. Did he go off somewhere?]

It is, you should remember it! I do not know why you do not.

[As a cat, Gilles hadn't been particularly thoughtful or insightful. Gilles isn't the most tactful person, but even he continues to hesitate at the thought of telling Judas why the Jews are so hated.

Slowly, he raises his head from his hands.]

Do you not know what today is?

[He thinks about it for a moment, then shakes his head.]

Other than the 25th, no. I've had some amnesia, it seems. I've forgotten a lot lately.

It is truly the 25th, then? I had thought so!

[Gilles wasn't entirely sure, but he wanted to sing Christmas songs.]

Today is Christmas. The day of the Savior's birth.

[No longer part of the Church, Gilles hesitates to say "our" savior, and he's currently deeply confused about his own beliefs. But he tries to do what Jeanne would want. A Jeanne-worshiping cult would serve Gilles much better.]

[Gilles is so confused right now.]

Judas! You were one of his disciples!

[What happened to his memories?]

[Gilles leans forward to tap on Judas' violet collar. He can't think of what else it could be--!]

No, not other than the usual checkups.

Wait- [he blinks.] You mean Jesus?

Then that cannot be it.

[What a surprising night. First Judas is Jewish, then he does not know who he is!]

Yes! Jesus Christ, the Savior. He was born in a manger in Bethlehem.

[Gilles makes a distressed noise, unsure of what to say.]

Yes, you are remembered, Judas...

[He laughs a little.]

Well, I doubt I mattered that much, but I would like to think I helped at least a bit. I'm sure it's Peter, Jacob and John who really make a difference.

Ah, no, you made a great difference!

[Nice save, Gilles. He pauses. He's trying to be nice. Actually, it's not as difficult for him if he actually likes someone.]

Beautiful Judas, I am sure you were the fairest apostle, and much beloved of your Jesus. Come, sing a song with me. It is your dear friend's birthday! If it were Jeanne's birthday, I know I would want to sing.

Really, me? Then I guess that means I'm actually Christian, now?

[Gilles isn't sure if he is Christian anymore, but he used to be quite devout.

Well, if being Christian means following Jesus, then of course I do. And I was, we all were.
