...Christmas? You mean one of your Christian festivals?

[For her, it is around the time of Ramadan. It is a time for austerity, not celebration. Not until the old year passes.]

...Thank you trying to help by celebrating your faith...but...well...there might be those here who would rather not celebrate.

Yes, it is a Christian festival, celebrating the birth of our Savior.

[Gilles finds the Church usually austere, with all the long prayers and grave ceremonies--which he once greatly enjoyed--but he had always enjoyed the celebrations at Christmastime, too.]

It is no great matter, they can enjoy the songs or sing some of their own.

[Yes, no problems here!]

And what if God (Glorified and Exalted be He) has no songs. No, rather, forbids songs at this time to some of his people? What if it is simply a time for reflection?

Then you may reflect! I would not force you to sing. But God does have many songs.

[Gilles leans in to look at her. This kind of interaction was much easier when he was a cat. He sighs, thinking of it. But at the same time, he is glad to be able to talk again.]

What are you, if you are not Christian?

I am a believer of God (Glorified and Exalted be He) and the words He has given to His Prophets (Peace be upon them). I believe that you would call me a Muslim.

Are you?

[Gilles peers at her. He has very little experience with Muslims, and he has a very poor idea of what they might be like. There is in him, still, that perverse interest in all the things the Church condemned. That someone should be a heathen--or godless, like Ryuunosuke--doesn't bother him as much as it might. Especially considering what he is. And where he is.]

A true infidel? And do you know the secret arts? I did once try to find a magician among your number! But I found an Italian instead...

I am no infidel!

[For just a second, anger smolders in her eyes.]

Like the People of the Book, we are people of God (Glorified and Exalted be He). The reason you would not find a magician among our number is that the magic arts are forbidden to us!

[Her anger dies down, as suddenly as it came. She wraps her bed sheet a little tighter around herself.]

There are...strange sciences we use. Curses as well. But only in service of God (Glorified and Exalted be He).

Ah, but all know that there are great magicians among the Saracens! I did find such magicians, but I did not prefer them.

[The ever-sensitive Gilles didn't mean the word "infidel" as an insult, somehow.]

Yes yes, that is what magic is, is it not?

[Gilles is not getting the difference here.]

No. It is no heretic's magic. It is only to be devoted to the service of God (Glorified and Exalted be He) and nothing else. Perhaps that is why you would not appreciate our sciences.
