Cafeteria Kitchens, early afternoon, any day 1st-13th

[Anyone who braves the cafeteria will find a usual scene - Asch with a bowl full of batter, or his hands deep in bread dough, or cleaning some animal of its meat.

On the twelfth and thirteenth, there's a big bigger prey than usual - large pieces of chocobo meat fill a table, in various states of "frozen" and "cooked," with whatever piece Asch is working on at the moment in front of him. Hell of a bird, that.]

[Floor 101, the morning of the 9th]

[A stop by the hidden floor has become a part of his morning rounds, since he prefers to catch the elevator on this floor rather than at the top of the dorms above. It's less crowded that way.

This morning, though, he has to stop and double-take at the thickening layer of pink snow building up on the garden paths and ledges.]

You have got to be kidding me.

[And for those of you who are choosing to stay in your rooms until the malfunctioning powers come to an end - luckily, there's a redheaded delivery service with your name on it.

If you don't run into him on the stairs or in the elevator, with arms full of bundled, makeshift meals, then knock-knock. Here's something a little less sugary sweet and morbid. You'll let him in, right?]

[Valentine's Mini-event catchall - the 14th, obviously]

[At least there's warnings this time. That's about the only good thing about this, really. Come morning there's Asch with a deep pink heart on his cheek and a bad attitude that might be familiar to anyone from Auldrant - he stomps his way up and down the staircase in a rush, with a glare leveled at anyone who gets in his way.

There's no food deliveries today, certainly - as far as he's concerned, you can all just starve. He's got better things to do than worry about people like you - even if yu're one of the people still inclined to help him out.]

[He sighs.]

He suggested that it would be better to cooperate as well. I suppose it would be unwise to completely ignore what the aggregate sentience of the Seventh Fonon says.

[So that means... But for now, he considers Asch's other answer.]

I see. And those friends of yours?

Tch.

[While the eggs fry, he gets another plate out for Jade, and snatches up some of the pancakes the worker drones are making for himself.]

You'd have to ask them. I'm not a nanny with nothing better to do than keep track of who dies.

[Jade meanwhile fetches himself utensils, not content to let Asch do all the work.]

I see. Then let me change the question to, 'Which of their deaths were most memorable to you?'

[...Not that he expects Asch to answer the question as-is. That's why Jade is watching for his reaction instead.]

[Now now, Jade, don't bust any of those tired old bones.

And sure enough, there's a bit of twitch and a frown in response, but nothing really dramatic. If Jade wasn't looking for it, it would have been easy to miss.]

The times I wasn't there, but should have been.

[There, that telling enough for you, Jade? That good enough to analyze?]

[Between that and that he knows there has been a Natalia here within the past year who has 'gone home'?

Yes. It is good enough--for now.

Jade's gaze on Asch remains level for a moment; then he returns to his task of procuring breakfast, securing a couple of pancakes of his own once he has his plate.]

I see.

What, that's all you have to say?

[He goes back to the pan and flips the eggs, scowling.]

Have you finally run out of questions, old man?

[Jade smiles and shrugs broadly. In stark contrast to his earlier demeanor, suddenly he's pleasant... but not quite easygoing.]

I never run out of questions. However, for the time being, I'm willing to put a rest to them. I'm quite famished and those eggs look to be almost done.

Hmph. Go sit somewhere then, I'll bring them over.

[And yes, they are almost finished. Good eggs. This is a far tastier fate for them than to be used in another of Ruana's thousand cakes.

Once that's finished, Asch leaves the pan in the sink for the drones and brings the plates over.]

Your turn to answer, then. I heard from Waver about what you all saw in that machine.

[That's not technically a question, but the tone makes the "tell me about it" in the statement obvious. It might not be important to anyone else, but this is clearly information that Asch wants dearly. ]

My, my, how authoritative of you.

[But pleasant-sounding sarcasm aside, Jade does pick a seat, plate, pancakes, and knife/fork before him. He doesn't actually sit until he's fetched himself a glass of water, but once he does, he waits patiently until Asch brings over the rest of breakfast.]

Did you now? You would have seen it too if you'd also volunteered.

[His tone is light, but there's no mistaking the element of criticism there. He at least doesn't dwell on it, leaving it as a jab.]

What did you want to know about it?

[It's a jab, however, that he won't let go unanswered.]

Forgive me for having had enough of being strapped to strange machines. Choral Castle was enough for any lifetime.

[There's a bit of bite in the comment, but it fades away fast. Jade surely can figure out exactly what he means anyway.

And he's still much more interested in the subject at hand than in reliving old terrors.]

I want to know what you saw, obviously.

[Your dancing around the bush is not appreciated here, Jade.]

[...And perhaps infuriatingly enough, Jade chooses to not respond to Asch's response. He does indeed understand immediately what he means, after all.]

Quite a few things. My memories of them are indistinct, though. I was left with the impression that I had seen 'every possible divergence to the fate of Auldrant,' so I suspect that was an automatic defense mechanism. I doubt any human mind could withstand remembering all of that. You'd probably be better served asking Lorelei about it.

[That's all right. Jade can deal with not being appreciated. Asch already finished making breakfast, which he begins to slowly savor. There's nothing like a fast to whet the appetite.]

[Hey, he's perfectly happy to drop that subject like a hot potato.

Jade's comments provide an interesting insight into the brain ticking away under the red hair, however - up to the mention of Lorelei, there's a smile slipping into place that's practically the equivalent of someone more emotional beaming like a little kid, and even the mention of talking to the sentience only dings it back to a neutral face.]

I can only imagine that going badly, actually. We have certain... fundamental disagreements about knowledge of the future and how it should be used.

[Putting it mildly, really.]

[Well, well. That is interesting. Jade is going to opt not to remark on it, and poker-faces back at it as he eats, because there's no better way to make the former noble self-conscious than to bring attention to it, but he hadn't realized that Asch was even capable of looking that happy anymore. Instead, the former God-General gets a seemingly innocent:]

Oh? Such as?

[Jade can make a few good guesses, but Lorelei is quite fond of his isofon. Surely it couldn't be so baahahahaha oh that was a good one.]

What do you think?

[The happy look is gone quickly, replaced by an expression that clearly says "stop asking me questions you already know the answers to."]

Get the entity that is practically the incarnation of the Score talking with someone who was practically raised to destroy it, and I'm sure you can imagine the results.

[It doesn't take a genius.]

[It doesn't--but it does confirm some things about Asch and Lorelei's relationship. Jade shrugs it off in that way he usually does.]

Dear oh dear. And Lorelei seemed ever so fond of you, too.

[Another small bite of egg. When he's finished chewing and swallowing:]

But even without those visions, which were largely rather unpleasant, I can assure you that the Score could be, and was, changed. At least, it had been by my when.

[The comment on fondness gets a snort - if you ask Asch, Lorelei is overly fond and somewhat smothering. And the younger redhead it too independent to be comfortable around a psuedoparent that Wants Things he isn't ready for.]

It's different, having this kind of confirmation.

[And on that note, time to get to work on those pancakes.]

[Family quarrels are not something Jade has any intention of getting into, so he merely smiles at the snort and leaves it at that. Instead:]

What were the most recent events in Auldrant when you were brought here?

[He knows for everyone else from Auldrant, even the Luke from a different version entirely (more or less), but not Asch. He never had the chance to ask before now, for obvious reasons.]

[Well, it's been a while since he had to answer this question. The response comes rote, like he's said it before.]

You lot were on your way to the Radiation Gate.

[Jade holds his chin.]

And you were injured from your battle with Van. Correct?

[A nod.]

Not that it mattered once I woke up here. Since then, most of those that arrived from Auldrant have either been from significantly before the lands descended, or after the assault on Eldrant.

I assume you mean overall, rather than the current group. Most of the Auldrantians here now are from somewhere between those two points.

[Nom eggs. They're actually pretty good, not that Asch's cooking abilities were in doubt; Jade had traveled with him twice before, if briefly, which was long enough to make it clear that Asch is a competent cook. Van's probably to thank for that, given Tear's ability.]

Overall, less than half of us who have been here are still around.

[Nom eggs, nom pancakes. Breakfast really is decent, compared to last year when there was candy embedded in everything. Ruana just made up for it with dinner.]

Most of those still here arrived around the same time, about a season after I did.

[Because referencing "months" is confusing in this context, he opts for a more relevant term.]
