Summary: Edgeworth confronts Ryoji again after his talk with Diarmuid. Then Edgeworth is under effects of the Heart for a Heart event.

Dorm corridors, late January - open to Ryoji]
[Damn it. Lucifel was gone and, as far as Edgeworth was concerned, he had to use the stairs again if he wanted to use any other method of transport without resorting to the elevators.

…Well, technically, he could ask Diarmuid for help but that would involve being carried up and downstairs like a damsel in distress….again.

Were Edgeworth sensible when it came to his issue with his phobias, he would have buckled it up and gone to Diarmuid anyway. However, since he was not sensible, he decided to use the stairs, taking even longer than the elevator to get down there.

Hopefully he won’t run into any monsters either.

As the prosecutor was about to make for the stairs, he suddenly saw a familiar young boy near the elevator, one whom he had not seen for a while..]

Ryoji?

[14th February, Floor 100 - open to Franziska and Diarmuid]

[Phoenix and Maya were gone. Back to their destroyed world where they could possibly be wandering around, alone, for eternity.

Perhaps they deserved this fate? That wicked, insufferable defense attorney and his terrible assistant, the daughter of that fraud…

And it was not just them. Franziska too. Every time Edgeworth thought about her, his heart filled with utter rage and contempt. She deserved to be back in her dead world too. It was the best type of justice that his adoptive sister could have.

As to why Edgeworth suddenly started to despise his two friends and his sister, he did not know. In fact, he did not even question it. All the prosecutor ‘felt’ was that they were dark and wicked people who deserved to have justice brought upon them.

Diarmuid and Franziska can find Edgeworth on Floor 100, staring at the place he missed the most.

It was his father’s study. When he was young, Miles would, after school, sit on the lap of his father, Gregory, while Gregory told his son about which court case he was working on, whom he was defending and how the case was progressing. Miles would sit and listen in awe and wonder, taking all this information in so he could be a defense attorney like his beloved father.

A father whom he now despised the most of all.

Edgeworth’s fist clenches.]

[The yelling intimidates Ryoji, but he isn't sure whether to walk out of the doors or hold them so Edgeworth can get on. He doesn't want his only escape to disappear, but it seems that Edgeworth is nervous around the elevator anyways.

After a while he finally exits the elevator, looking a bit like a scolded child.]

What do you want?

First, come away from the elevator. (Because I'm not getting on that bloody thing!)

...Okay.

[Ryoji takes a few steps away from the elevator, but stops a fair distance away from Edgeworth, still nervous.]

That's better.

Perhaps we should both find a quieter place to go?

[He's not sure what Ryoji means by being 'too trusting'. Did someone in the tower make him attack his friends? If so, who?]

I-I guess so.

[Ryoji hugs himself with one arm, avoiding eye contact. It's clear he doesn't really want to talk, but he isn't going to be rude and leave. He'll follow Edgeworth wherever he wants to go to 'talk'.]

Perhaps one of the lounges? [Except he's not going there - he's only making sure that Ruana cannot hear them because he actually wants to go to the hidden floor.]

Yes, that would be alright... would it be quicker to take the elevator?

Er....[Thank god they're not really going to the lounge.] ...why do we need to? Walking is much better for you.

Well, if you'd prefer to walk...

[Ryoji files that information away for later. Edgeworth is definitely nervous about elevators for some reason. It might be useful to try to remember that... though he'd feel bad if he used that against Edgeworth.]

[Edgeworth just starts to head towards the stairs.] Come on. Follow me.

[Ryoji swallows nervously then follows after as instructed.]

[Edgeworth and Ryoji make their way to Floor 101. Edgeworth will step off the staircase and beckon Ryoji to come with him before making his way to the teleporter.

Even Ryoji should be able to figure this out.]

[And he does indeed figure it out. He looks back at Edgeworth, unsure, but steps onto the teleporter, entering the hidden floor.]

[And Edgeworth makes his way to a little corner before turning around and facing Ryoji.]

Now, are you more comfortable with talking about what happened? [Probably not, which is why Edgeworth is not sure whether or not he should trick the boy into talking.]

I-I… um…

[Ryoji swallows his nerves and looks up at Edgeworth, adopting a calm, but assertive tone.]

Forgive me, but I don’t really want to discuss this. What happened is in the past, anyways, and I am making up for it however I can. I don’t believe I need to share more.

(There they are! His psycho locks.

Diarmuid claims that Ryoji was forced to attack his friends, whereas Ryoji himself claims that him attacking his friends was his own fault. Which of them is telling the truth?

I guess I'll have try and break Ryoji's. I may not have evidence, but I do have a certain weapon up my sleeve. But before I use it...)

Ryoji, if you want me to believe in you then you'd better tell me the truth. Right here and right now.

[Ryoji knows nothing about any weapons Edgeworth may have, and he doesn’t know anything about the discussion Diarmuid had with the man. All he knows is that he’s sick of discussing this. Sick of explaining to people only for them to accept him. Their acceptance is what had gotten them in such trouble, so… wouldn’t it be easier for him to just take an opportunity and run with it? Get Edgeworth out of this while he had the chance.]

I apologize, but I don’t feel the need for you to believe in me.

[He offers a smile that doesn’t reach his eyes.]

So you want me to see you as an vicious monster? Fine by me.

If that is the absolute truth, that is.

[Sorry, Ryoji. You can't talk your way out of this that easily.]

Why is truth so important to you? Not everything is so black and white. There may not be one way to interpret a situation.

[And there may be more than one way to interpret his whole situation... which is why he's not going to risk explaining it when there's a chance Edgeworth can interpret it in a good way.]

Naturally, not everything is black and white. Sometimes, the truth can be good, bad or a bit of both. Other times, it's almost unbearable. However, better that than lying and getting the wrong people hurt as a consequence.

Oh, there may be more than one way to interpret a situation. However, that does not mean that there is no room for lies or that one should jump to conclusions without knowing the facts.

...Of course. I wasn't suggesting lying, unless you believe one can also lie by just not speaking about the matter.

[He shakes his head quickly.]

No one is going to get hurt anymore. No one needs to interpret what happened. It happened, and it's over now. There's... nothing to worry about anymore.

Ryoji, I'm sorry but if you think that I am going to leave it at that by those words alone then you are sadly mistaken.

According to Diarmuid, someone forced you to attack your friends. Now, I don't believe that Diarmuid is lying but if he is right and it was not the administrators who were making you hurt others then it is obviously one of the other guests. If that is the case then it is that guest who is dangerous and needs to be warned about, especially if he or she makes other people do the same.

Of course, that is only a possibility. Another possibility is that Diarmuid is mistaken and you are the one who needs to be warned about. However, again, that is only a possibility and I do not want to hold the wrong person responsible. It's not fun, being in a position where you are accused and shunned for something terrible that you did not do.

[Ryoji falls silent for a moment, frustrated. Edgeworth is trying to interrogate him, and he doesn’t feel comfortable sharing. It’s a problem he was dealing with on his own. He didn’t want to get the whole Tower involved…

The fact that Diarmuid spoke with Edgeworth hurts him. He feels a bit betrayed… he knows his adoptive father was only trying to help, but now it gave Edgeworth information about him. He can’t keep a past a secret this way.

Despite his increasing fear and anger, Ryoji keeps a straight face, though some words slip out before he realizes what he’s admitting to.]

It may not be fun, but it’s something I have experience with.

...Regardless, the situation has been taken care of. The ‘guest’ you want to blame doesn’t need to be warned about, since he’s already disappeared. That’s the end of the story, so you will have to leave it at that.
