Summary: 1NV3ST1G4T1ON because what else does she ever do.

[once again the Neophyte found herself wandering the Tower. exploring new floors, exploring old ones, catching a bite to eat in the cafeteria...she might even spend a little time in her own dorm room at some point. who knows what she'll get up to or who she'll run into.]

[he tilts his chin upward, further appraising her. her demeanor tells him that she is most usually all business; of which he is grateful, having no qualms with cutting to the chase.]

Did the Grand Highblood not inform you 'a her mindcontrol abilities?

[the question is unexpected, but redglare remains outwardly stoic.]

I assume you are referring to my most recent assignment.

[He nods.]

I am.

[there's a bit of a weighty silence--the neophyte, considering--before she speaks.]

[so he thought. he stiffens slightly, eyes narrowing. as much as he'd rather not say it, it really can't be helped, all things considered. what her reaction may be, however...]

Then you must realize the joke's on you.

[her posture hardly changes, though she does draw herself up a bit...the extent of the nerve he's hit lies in her terse, though politely intoned, reply.]

I may be young, but I am far from stupid.

[he further surveys her, makes note of the change, though otherwise remains as he has.]

I have spoken with the Grand Highblood since arriving here.

[she's not going to mention that he told her it wasn't his personal joke if she can help it, mostly because she's not entirely convinced of that fact herself...]

[lovely. and through this whole little charade of his, it wouldn't do to forget what prompted it. but remuneration of his future death -- at the hands of an alleged ally -- makes him bitter. told by the very same, in fact.]

[wow on the one hand she doesn't want to discuss this at all, but on the other hand she has a sneaking suspicion that dualscar will pull rank on her (or become violent, stupid highbloods) if she outright tries to leave the conversation. so:]

He merely assured me I would have opportunity to resume my duties here in the Tower.

[it really is, though, no matter how sarcastic his tone may sound. and as if hearing her thoughts aloud, his hand goes to finger the hilt of his sword-- in a contemplative sort of way, as if the action itself were subconscious.]

Then you will continue your pursuit 'a the Marquise? Or is it a different assignment you're lookin' to do?

I'm looking to do the tasks my superiors assign me.

[although now that she knows what she's up against she would like to go after mindfang again, for sure. revenge for her death.]

[she may catch the fractional raising of eyebrows, before they're lowered once more.]

I doubt you will have very many tasks assigned to you here 'a all places, don't you?

I wouldn't be so sure about that.

[she says it mildly, though. she is good at doing the polite thing! it is a well-honed survival instinct.]

[he presses his lips into a thin, humorless line.]

An' if that subjugglator were to order you against someone even higher than himself, you would...?

[that earns him another side-eye, but otherwise her expression remains stoic.]

What meaning does caste have in the face of justice?

[he almost laughs aloud. almost. but as it stands, her quip only musters an ill-conceived smile. smirk, to be more accurate. a young neophyte indeed.]

Nothin' 'a the sort. But an inferior orderin' against a superior... if that weren't frowned upon, I'd wonder if the word had any weight to it at all.

[he can't help but feel that reply was a little... dubious.]

[she directs her gaze back to the projection. maybe she shouldn't have spoken so...freely, earlier. but there's no point in dwelling on it.]

[wow what an infuriatingly vague answer. they just went around in a huge circle!!!!!!!!! the smirk is gone now, and his eyes have narrowed. he wonders if he should be frank with her, no matter how detrimental that may be to himself.

Perhaps I should've been more plain. If that subjugglator were to order you against someone higher in caste than himself, say... [himself. but no, that would be toeing the line a little too much] a certain sea dweller, would you follow through?

[well this is actually a question with a lot of nuance, dualscar, did you ever think of that???]

If they deserved to be brought to justice, surely.

[unless it was like the condesce or something because there's no way she could kill her? but she is pretty sure dualscar actually just means himself, he is being stupidly transparent!]

[he is the most excellent at being stupidly transparent. but gee wiz, not an answer he's particularly fond of. it's kind of a huge fucking pain in the ass that, despite the grand highblood being a land dweller, he is still higher than him. still. higher. than. him. for stupid reasons, he thinks, and gee if he isn't sorely ticked about that.

the dissatisfaction is clear on his face, the scowl already evident.]

The fact that you're willin' to die in the line 'a duty is... noteworthy.

[but his words are honest.]

[redglare shifts--just a hair--into a stance that is slightly more defensible. just in case. the change is barely noticeable.]

It is a legislacerator's duty to bring criminals to justice. Better to die in the line of duty than suffer a dishonorable death in His Honorable Tyranny's maw, I say.

And we all have very important duties to fulfill, don't you think?

[wow what an intriguing thing to say! why he feels the need to question is so thoroughly regarding such matters, is anyone's guess. but then, why shouldn't he? he has every right to, after all, even if his interest in the first place remains a little eyebrow-raise worthy. he'll chalk it up to boredom.]

[stated contemplatively, even. cue the metaphorical beard stroking.]

An' if punishment weren't guaranteed, would you still fulfill that duty? Answer honestly.
