The Midnight Game

As the chosen residents approach the elevator, two retrieval units will be waiting to hand out a sheet of paper to each person. These sheets of paper contain the instructions for their game, as well as a number placing them in one of four groups. The groups will be called one by one into the elevator and, after a long ride down, will be released into an empty version of the Tower identical to the one they just left, with two differences: in place of the countless dormitory rooms are just enough rooms for each group member to occupy one, and each door is made of wood. Inside each room is a candle, a knife that will cut the skin of the person wielding it and nothing else, a blank piece of paper, a book of matches, and a container of salt. Once in their rooms, they are to begin The Midnight Game.

Midnight Game Instruction Sheet
1. Write your complete name on the piece of paper.
2. Use the knife to cut your skin and place at least one drop of blood on the paper, allowing it to soak in.
3. Turn off the lights in your room. This will turn off all the lights in the Tower.
4. Place the piece of paper on the floor in front of the door. Light your candle and plce it on top of the piece of paper.
5. Knock on the dor 22 times. Upon the twenty-second knock, it will be midnight.
6. Open the door, blow out the candle, and close the door.
7. Relight your candle.

You must now move around the Tower, keeping your candle with you at all times. Keep moving to avoid the Midnight Man. If your candle goes out, relight it immediately. If you cannot relight your candle, surround yourself with a circle of salt. If you are unsuccessful you will



Keep moving until 3:33AM. If you are not captured by the Midnight Man, you win the game. If your entire group fails, you will be punished.

Well if your world's Summoner was anything like the one I ran into here, I can't say I'm surprised. For someone supposed to lead a revolution he didn't strike me as particularly ruthless.

Well, you know that being ruthless and violent is pretty much the opposite of the whole point, right?

Right. So is that why we blues and purples are drugged from hatching to make sure we don't lash out? Is that why we're watched like hawks for that single toe to cross the wrong line so we can be proven to be a threat and disposed of? Please do enlighten me because I'm here now trying to figure out just how much I should loathe you.

[His eyes widen with genuine horror] Drugged? What? That's horrible!

[She nods, unable to help feeling a little satisfied at that reaction. Her world's Signless or not, he deserves to know exactly where his legacy led]

Did you know sopor slime could be turned into pills? Pills that are forced down our throats because it's the only way we're allowed to live.

[She pauses, smirking a little]

Until you figure out how to play the system so they don't watch you closely enough to check, anyway.

[His face falls and his fists clench. Even if this isn't what happened in his own universe, he still feels responsible. If he had succeeded, this is what would have happened. That makes it his fault just as much. In fact, there's nothing saying that this isn't his own universe, and Di, Psi and his lusus are from another version.]

I'm sorry, Vriska. It wasn't what I intended, at all. It's a perversion of everything I stand for. If there's anything I can do to help, to fix the mistakes that were made in my name, I'll do it.

[She shakes her head, shrugging]

There's not much you can do to fix things from here. And I'm pretty sure whatever damage they did to me before I began to stood up for myself is irreversible so why bother dwelling?

It's in my nature, I guess. I'm responsible for what happened to you, even if I can't do anything to reverse it. [He shrugs] And just because it might seem hard doesn't mean it's impossible for me to make a difference. We don't know what'll happen in the future.

[Yeah, she's not looking too convinced]

Unless you know how to make eyes grow back, there's pretty much nothing you can do for me that I haven't found a way around myself already. And it's not like it matters which way the spectrum runs from where I'm standing.

Well. In my world, the only reason I get away with being Mindfang's descendent and a rebellious blue is because I'm best friends with the Grand Premier. I still get treated like lowblood scum and I have to play to both sides of the spectrum to get anywhere.

By your system, sure I'd be able to lord it over the stupid greens but there'd still be the purples and the sea dwellers and the other blues looking down on me. Either way I'm pretty much scum to someone.
