Summary: It's Shinji's birthday, and Minako wants to celebrate with him. Shinji is feeling the loss of Akihiko being gone. BACKDATED TO THE 11TH.
Warnings: Half fluff, half angst. It should stay PG13.

[Shinji's birthday is today, and boy does Minako have a lot of things planned for him. Her day had started after waking up at 5:30am, with cake baking at 6am, and present preparing at 8am. By the time 9 had rolled around, she was pretty tired.

Shinji wouldn't mind if she took a little time to eat breakfast. In fact, he'd probably demand that she do that, so Minako heads down to the the cafeteria to grab a bite to eat before she looks for him.]

[Luckily for her, Shinjiro was a heavy sleeper. Even an army of alarm clocks used to have trouble waking him up back in the SEES dorms. He was used to being up at night, so by the time eleven am rolled around he...was still in bed.

No. No wait. There he finally got up, stretching. The rest of the three in his dorm appeared to be gone that morning.

...shit. It was his birthday wasn't it? He groaned, still bitter that he couldn't find Aki around anymore. The fact his name was gone had hit him a lot harder than he let on. He hated birthdays...and yet he wouldn't have minded celebrating it with him that one time. He counted himself lucky that Minako was around or else he would...

You only realize shit like this when they're gone...Tch. He leaned back on the bed to think.]

[With breakfast eaten and dishes put a way, Minako stretches and starts the figurative hunt. He wasn't in the kitchen or she would've seen him...she searches his usual haunts like the meadow and the forest levels, and by the time it was eleven, she'd searched everywhere but the dorm rooms for him.

Which was obviously the place he is, being the last. A peek into the room finds him lounging on his bed, and thus she pounces.

Minako bursts through the door and tackles him.]

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

AWW YEAH

[legatus]

[Of course. That is the law of everything, the last place you look is exactly where they are. Especially with a heavy sleeper like him...He is so caught up in his thoughts that he doesn't notice Minako until he hears her speaking, turns around and is flung down on the bed again.]

THE HELL D'YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?!

[He is happy to see you but DON'T GIVE HIM A HEART ATTACK.]

Telling you happy birthday, obviously. Did I surprise you? [She grins and moves back, tucking her legs under her.] I was looking all over for you just now. Have you been in here all morning?

[He just groans for a few seconds.]

I ended up patrolling late at night yesterday. Never was good at waking up early anyway...

[Wait. Shit. His birthday..]

Nrrgh. Y-you didn't have to do that...

[Her smile softens.]

I wanted to. [She's going to make this one of the best birthdays he's ever had.] Com'on, get changed and let's get you some-- well, brunch at this rate. After that you can open your present and eat your cake!

[To be perfectly honest? Shinjiro had forgotten it was his own birthday. He never had celebrated it before. The orphanage kept it strictly Japanese traditional, and he simply got a paper telling him he was a year older, and that was that. It was also the only way he knew about his birthday at all. So while he was touched...it was also incredibly strange.

Also he was Shinjiro. He'd complain regardless.]

I'd get up but you're blocking me.

[True, he could make you fall off but...]

Oh right. [She laughs and pecks him on his cheek before slipping off of his bed. As much as she would like to watch him change...] I'll be waiting outside when you're ready.

[legatus]

Tch. Women.

[He's muttering more to himself than anything else, really, but...there is a small smile on his face. Alright, Aki's disappearance does pain him but he can't just forget what he also has here either...when did he start caring about things?

Oh right. He always did. Never just upfront about them. Still isn't either.]

[After a few minutes, Shinjiro comes out...dressed pretty much like normal.]

Alright. Let's get this over.

[WHY ARE YOU SUCH A GRUMP.]

[She stands outside, rocking on her heels and thinking as she waits. This time last year (well, last year for her and him), Akihiko had probably visited Shinji for his birthday, huh...

Minako's thoughts linger to the rabbit doll that's in her room right now, and she closes her eyes. Even if it hadn't been their Akihiko, persay, she'd been hoping that he and Shinji would reconnect. For the two of them to have each other as pillars of support while they were here. So much for that.

She quickly opens her eyes and smiles at him when he comes out. She falls into step beside him as she leads them to the stairs.]

Okay, be honest with me...how many of those coats do you have in your trunk?

[legatus]

[It wasn't the type of question he was expecting of her, so he stops walking for a few seconds before he honestly answers.]

...The coat's one-of-a-kind.

[He might have bought one and done a few modifications to it. Yes he cleans it when he can, but it's a coat, okay.]

Darn. [She laughs and practically bounces down the stairs.] I wanted one for myself. Or maybe I could just make my own in the workshop.
