02 - Everyone Has A Purpose
Characters: Kanaya and everyone!
Setting: Room 2-07
Format: I'll follow you
Summary: Kanaya offers to make clothes for people
Warnings: None except perhaps pin pricking for particularly squirmy people.
[When Kanaya's chest was restored she didn't find the sets of clothing she had originally arrived with. Instead she found several bolts of fabric in various colors and sewing supplies. Rather than despairing she turns it into an opportunity to be useful. She had been feeling lost without a purpose in the tower. She makes a makeshift sign that reads in neatly lettered green: "Clothes Made For Those Who Need Them". Underneath this is a lengthy green smudge as if she had elaborated on the statement then realized that an overly long sign would defeat the purpose of advertising to passersby. After hanging the sign, she sits down on her bed to wait.]

[Still not looking directly at him. There's a slight hint of jade in her cheeks. She then indicates the elbows he had been fingering before and says simply:]
Your jacket's in terrible shape.
no subject
[Then he stares at her. And he snorts. It's loud and unrepentant.]
...darlin', my life is in terrible shape, don't wworry about it.
no subject
I suppose we are more alike than I thought.
And all the same, no matter how unpleasant your life may be, one can't remain in such raggedy clothing. Wait a moment while I make you a new one.
no subject
[Yeah, someone's back to absently worrying the sleeves with his claws. Man, those are some sharp claws.]
I mean, you probably havve better things to do an' all.
no subject
Not really. I'm afraid I've been feeling somewhat lost without a purpose here in the tower. When I was home I took care of my lusus and my then-moirail. During and after the game I took care of my friends. Here though, I've had nothing useful to do. But when the chest gave me fabric instead of clothing, it gave me a kind of purpose.
[She looks up from her work to give him an embarrassed, self deprecating smile.]
I suppose that seems a little strange.
no subject
...that's... pretty much wwhat it wwas like, for me.
[He offers her a wan smile.]
Sans the fabric, though. I'm not all that good at it.
[Excuse him while he scratches the back of his neck, awkward.]
I'm not really good at anythin' other than shootin' things, I guess. An', you knoww. Fuckin' up royally an' shit.

[And then his claws start clicking again because someone just made a hole in his shirt. Again.]
...though I'm not sure my clawws are ready to try again.
[A wince. Needles into the fleshy underside of a claw? Not a pain you easily forget.]
no subject
I suppose with those it might be difficult but not wholly impossible if you're careful. Come, sit with me and I'll show you the basics.
[She sits down on her bed and pats the space beside her.]
no subject
[He mutters a tad snidely, though again, it seems mostly aimed at himself, not at her. He fidgets again, though, at her offer.]
...ah, but you're not busy?
[He doesn't want to impose or anything.]
no subject
[She's trying to make a light of the situation...she's just not very good at humor, okay?]
Business, if you would call it that, has been rather slow at the moment so I'm not busy in the least.
no subject
[He shrugs a little, and very slowly makes his way to where she is.]
I don't want to take up your time, that's all.
No I totally didn't almost post this as Casey....not at all
[Oh come on, stop lollygagging.]
In any case, I had been hoping for another chance to converse with you.
Heh.
[Coming up, a most incompetent sewing student, woo.]
You were? Ah, I'd have expected you not to want much to do with me. After you know...
[He shrugs.]
I'm sorry about that.
no subject
[She quickly looks back down at the sewing.]
Here, see? It's really not hard. You take the needle, push it into the fabric then pull it out a very short distance away. That makes a stitch.
no subject
[Eridan seems mildly offended at that statement, even as he tries to mimic her stitches. He can stitch alright, but they're always either too tight or too loose. He's not playing attention anyway, he's frowning at her.]
No one should get used to being treated badly.
[Except him, but he kind of deserves it. And he never counts, anyway.]
no subject
You're pulling the needle too hard. Here, you simply need to pull gently, like this.
[She takes his hands in hers, guiding him to make a stitch correctly.]
no subject
[Eridan smiles wryly, probably talking about something that has nothing to do with the needle or the sewing, but he obeys her lead.]
I mean it, though. 's not someone you should get used to.
no subject
[She doesn't let on if she's aware of his double meaning but the metaphor works for a variety of circumstances.
At his next statement she looks up at him, questioningly, and not entirely certain what to say.]
Thank you. It is...nice to have a friend here as compassionate as yourself.
no subject
[He shrugs again, looking down and focusing on his stitches.]
I'm not a very good friend, though. Not really compassionate, either. Just... pointing out the obvious, I think.
