Kitchen disastors! [Open]

Characters: Romeo and cake lovers?
Setting: Kitchens mid morning
Format: your choice!
Summary: Romeo wants to do something nice for his new friends, he has decided to make a cake. MESS HAPPENS
Warnings: potentially exploding cake!
Romeo entered the kitchen and put the book he had found in the library down on the counter. He had been thinking of doing something for his friends here and since everyone liked tasty food he had decided to make something. So he had found a cook book and a recipie for cake.

However Romeo had never baked before, back at home there really hadn't been much food at all and in Milano he had been banned from the kitchen in case he stole food. Apparantly chimney sweeps worked better when they were hungry. He found a big bowl and looked at the recipie. 2 oz Butter Romeo blinked he didn't know what a oz was. He opened the fridge and saw some blocks of butter. Two of them then.

2 oz Sugar Romeo nodded, this didn't look too hard, he grabbed two bags of sugar and added them to the butter. He looked back at the book. Cream the butter and sugar he sighed, so many ingredients!

He grabbed a tub of cream and added that. Two eggs; beaten. Romeo frowned, he hoped eggs didn't feel pain. "Sorry," he murmered to him before he punched each egg smashing them on the counter. He scooped the goo up, shell and all and added them to the mis and stired a bit. Mixture went everywhere but he kept it in the bowl as best as possible. 4 oz self raising flour. That was a lot of flour. He grabbed four small bags of flour and added them to the bowl. It said to fold so he stuck his hands in and tried to fold the ingredients around each other. He emptied it into the pan and quickly put it in the oven, sliding it into the oven by the floor because he didn't want to enter the cooker.

He cleaned up as best he could and when it had been the right amount of time he wrapped his hands in cloth and took the tray out. It looked burned and wobbly and when he placed it on the top the thin shell that had formed broke open. Hot cake mix went everywhere, spilling onto Romeo's shirt and down the bench.

For a moment Romeo just stood there eyes wide wondering what had gone wrong.

(pfff, only just realized my romano/romeo mistake, so very sorry, was delirious last night; )

She clucked her tongue when she saw the marks, relaxing a bit when she saw they weren't as bad as they could have been. "You are very lucky," she sighed, turning to soak a drying cloth in cold water before wringing it out and pressing it to the boy's reddened skin. "What were you trying to make that would explode so... dramatically?" she asked, systematically moving the cloth over his stomach.

Francisca paused and looked around at the mess of the... 'cake'. "...... I see..... You've never cooked before have you?" A smile tweaked her lips and she lifted the cloth from his skin to check its' condition. A bit pink and raw, but it would be better in an hour or so.

"It isn't that difficult... would you like me to teach you?" she asked, smiling as she put the cloth in the sink. He was such a polite young boy, and she did have soft spot for children.

And after America, every child was an angel.

France chuckled and nodded. "Of course, it is not trouble at all!" She then smiled a bit cheekily and asked, "How about you go put a new shirt on, and I will set up the area?"

She managed to sort out some of the mess - enough that they at least had a semi-clear working area. Seeing Romeo reappear she smiled, handing him an apron she'd found. "Well then, let's take a look at this recipe you were using..."

Reading through the first step, she measured out 2 oz of butter and 2 oz of sugar into the bowl before handing it to Romeo with a fork. "Mash the butter into the sugar with that until they are completely mixed mon cher~" Leaving him to do that, she got another bowl and expertly broke two eggs into it before beating them with a whisk, humming softly.

Francisca blinked and chuckled when she realized what he was saying. "Non non non, the recipe said to cream the sugar and butter together - it's a cooking term that more or less means mixing together. Also, if you do it enough with the butter..." She motioned down at the smoother butter and sugar mix, dipping a finger in it. "It becomes creamier, see?"

Smiling, she poured the beaten eggs into Romeo's bowl, gently taking the fork from him and handing him a wooden spoon. "There, now stir those eggs into the butter mix while I measure out the flour."

"I was confused when I saw it in English the first time, don't worry," she answered with a chuckle, carefully measuring out the flour. "You can call me Francisca, or France - 'miss' sounds too formal, especially when I just tore your shirt off~"

After adding the flour to Romeo's bowl, she replaces the spoon in his hand with a rubber spatula and puts her hand over his, demonstrating how to fold the flour in, her free hand rotating the bowl steadily. "This is how you 'fold in' a lighter ingredient to the mixture - and I enjoy cooking, so I bake quite a few cakes too." She laughed and added, "One of my friends complained that it was a ploy on my part to make her fat, because I enjoyed giving her cakes as presents."

"Quite a few of us are here, oui," she answered with a smile. She left him to keep folding the mixture as she got a cake tin and lined it with baking paper. "Did your friend get better?"

She quickly checked the temperature of the oven before returning to Romeo with the lined tin, setting it on the workbench next to him. "Well, as a nations we don't gain weight the same way humans do, so she had no right to complain, but I think it was to save face. But you've only had cake once before here? I will have to fix this and make you many cakes while we are here then!" She chuckled at the mention of Molly. "Ah yes, petite Molly~ I'll be making her some cookies later once I'm sure they've got all the ingredients."

She gestured at the lined tin, steadying it with her hands, "Now, pour the mix into here slowly, and use the spatula to get it all out."

Francisca noticed the boy turn quiet before he punched the air, and smiled, reaching out to ruffle his hair gently. "I'm sure she is fine then, and when you return home, you can visit her in Paris. If I am the France in that world, I'll make sure to bring you to my house and give you many good things to eat!"

Once Romeo was done pouring the mix, Francisca carefully put it in the oven, setting the little timer on the work bench. "She's American, of course she likes sweets," she murmured, chuckling fondly. "Now then, what kind of icing shall we put on this cake? Buttercream? Chocolate?"

[identity profile] champagnedelis.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
She blinked at his question and stroked her chin thoughtfully. "It's... a sweet, creamy substance we coat the cake in when it's baked. It can add flavor to the cake and since the one we just made had no chocolate or fruit put in, I thought it might be nice to give it some icing?"

[identity profile] champagnedelis.livejournal.com 2011-09-16 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
Francisca paused and grinned, petting the boy. "Romeo, you are a genius! We can make ice cream cake!"

As she dug around for a cake tin the same size as the one she'd just put in the oven, she answered his second question, "I prefer the butter icing, but children and people with a sweet-tooth tend to prefer the chocolate. It's thick, rich and so very chocolatey~"

[identity profile] champagnedelis.livejournal.com 2011-09-16 09:56 am (UTC)(link)
"Ice cream cake is when we make a layer of the cake out of ice cream," she answered, lining the second cake tin with baking paper. "Since we have so much ice cream this month, we might as well take advantage of it."

"I think chocolate is a good choice then," she chuckled, mind buzzing with the appropriate recipes she'd need. Since the icing would be chocolate then, she decided to use mint ice cream, getting a bucket of the stuff from the fridge and leaving it close to the oven to make it thaw a bit faster. Once it was softened enough, she put the tub next to the lined cake tin and handed Romeo a large spoon. "Now, we scoop the ice cream into this tin until it's full like this," she said, demonstrating how to add it to the pan.
