Edgeworth has found Yotsuba..

Characters: Yotsuba Koiwai, Edgeworth, and you!
Setting: Floor 24. Backdated to the 28th.
Format: We're starting in prose, but we'll match you!
Summary: After meeting Yotsuba, Edgeworth, annoyed that no one was looking after Yotsuba for quite a long time starts looking for her friends and anyone he knows that can take care of her. However, Yotsuba tends to run off when things catch her eye, which leads the pair to a monster.
Warnings: Child death if you're not quick enough and Edgeworth's scoldings if you happen to be someone that's met Yotsuba before.

Most people would not really see Edgeworth as the type to hang around with small children. Neither would Edgeworth, really.

Nevertheless, one thing that the prosecutor was not going to turn a blind eye to was a child wandering around the tower without adult supervision when there were monsters about. Therefore, when he discovered that five year-old Yotsuba appeared to have nobody looking after her, he decided to take the matter into his own hands – and that meant taking her around Floors 1-4, finding some of the friends she has already made in the tower – and giving them a good talking-to (because this child was on her own and exposed to danger and how irresponsible can people be?).

Holding the child by the hand so that he could not lose sight of her, he went through the floors, hoping to find someone that she would recognise. Perhaps, he would even run into Maya or the two Lancers or anyone else he has met who knew of the little girl’s friends.

Yotsuba, meanwhile, would happily go along with Edgeworth, not really understanding why the man was so annoyed, but, since this was pretty fun, she would wander around with him, sing sometimes, and mess up the prosecutors name by calling him Edgeworm (which the prosecutor did not like but let slide as Yotsuba was a child and probably did not mispronounce his name intentionally). However, she would get his name correct the second time she spoke it.

Everything was going well....until the two of them were busy making their way from the third to the fourth floor and spotted one of those little prize pod monsters floating on the stairway.

While the prize pod was not at all dangerous, Edgeworth did not know that since it was the first time he had seen one. In normal circumstances, he would avoid it. However, Yotsuba, who loved new things as long as they didn’t scare her, quickly let go of Edgeworth’s hand and began to chase after the monsters, hoping to get a proper look at them.

Seeing (in horror) the small child scuttle upstairs, Edgeworth tried to follow her immediately. “W-wait, Yotsuba! What are you doing?! Get back here!”

“I want to get a better look at that thing! Yotsuba will be back in a moment-” Yotsuba yelled to Edgeworth as she ran, but when she got on the twenty-fourth floor, the prize pod monster was quickly forgotten.

She found herself at the other side of the room, with a large, shadowy monster staring her down. And it was hungry.

Edgeworth, meanwhile, had tried his best to keep up with her. He was not stupid - he took everyone else’s warnings about the other floors very seriously and therefore had yet to visit most of them himself (although he was considering going to them with a few other people so he could keep up with what was going on in this accursed tower). Unfortunately, a tiny little girl was now putting herself in danger...

“Oh my god...!”

The prosecutor was right next to the stairs when he finally found the girl. Horrified, his eyes widened when saw that monster staring over Yotsuba. If Yotsuba did not run away from it or if he did not do something, there was going to be one very dead little girl in that room.

Knowing that he could not just stand there, Edgeworth called out to the child in a commanding voice. “Yotsuba! Come over here right now!”

Care to help them out, anyone?

[[ooc: Your post will have both Yotsuba and Edgeworth-frilliance-responding to it, so look forward to that!]]

There was a flurry of movement on the stairs near Edgeworth as a purple-and-white blur vaulted over the staircase and onto the twenty-fourth floor. Sheba hadn't encounter the monster herself before, but she's heard enough horror stories to know that if she's in the meadow and she hears shouts coming from below, she needs to move, and fast.

"Run for it, kid!" Her voice was a little shrill. There were some times when she really hated the Administrators of this place, and times like these - when a five-year-old was in danger of losing her life, no, she could not be allowed to die, not now that they knew what happened to corpses down in the lower reaches of the Tower - were a prime example.

Purple lightning crackled at her fingertips as she swiftly ran right for the shadowy mass that was looming over Yotsuba. "Squall!" She yelled, tightening her grip on her staff before lunging forward to bring it down on the closest part of the monster. In the same instant, a burst of purple lightning struck the monster from above - with any luck, it should be paralyzed, but she knows in this place nothing is a constant and there have been times in the past where Squall has failed to paralyze its target, so she immediately tries to run around the thing. If it's not paralyzed, if that little girl has to run for the stairs, she needs to cover her.

Edgeworth turned when he heard Sheba's yell. He was about to warn the other girl when she ran towards the monster........summoned lightning?

Okay, whatever. There was no time to be stunned. Now, he had to get Yotsuba off this floor. Before things took a turn for the worse.

Slowly, Edgeworth took a couple of steps away from the stairs, ready to grab the girl's hand or arm so he could quickly grab her and make it for the next floor.

"Over here!" he yelled to the small child. Hopefully, she would reach him in time...

"Stay on the stairs!" Diarmuid hears the yelling during his patrol of the area and makes his way there as fast as possible. When he sees his roommate moving onto the floor, he can't help but call the warning since more people on that floor is just more to save.

He pauses only for a moment in the floor entry to take in the scene before almost literally disappearing as he begins moving so quickly normal human eyes won't be able to follow him. The first thing he does is gather the little girl into one arm to get her away from the monster. She's obviously a non-combatant and the one in the most danger.

The other person on the floor is obviously a fighter, though and just grabbing her might not be a good idea, so he calls out to her first, "Just relax a moment!" He then drops an arm around her waist picking her up as well before dashing back toward the safe end of the floor.

"What--?"

Relax? Why would she be relaxing-- oh. Well, that explains it. Diarmuid is moving faster than she could, and so while she's not overly fond of being lugged around like a sack of potatoes, she's well aware that getting caught by that monster could be much worse. And he'd at least warned her, so when he picks her up she doesn't struggle.

She notes with relief that the man carrying her also has Yotsuba - good. Maybe they'll be able to get out of this without any injury after all.

What the....?! Diarmuid was there one minute and the next he was on another side of the room, with the two girls in either arm. How....?

Never mind. Whatever weird powers his roommate had, they seemed to out-speed the monster!

Well, no time to think about it. Now might be a good time to get out of here. The prosecutor turned and made his way back to the stairs. Thankfully, he was not too far. Hopefully, the others would make it in time?

Diarmuid doesn't take the time to answer Yotsuba right away. Instead, he focuses on dashing back to the other end of the floor and out of the room. He honestly hasn't messed much with that monster, and so he doesn't want to risk anyone's life on his lack of knowledge about it. Only once they are safely off the floor, and he can see that Edgeworth has also made it to the stairs safely, does he set the girls down.

Well, he sets the older girl down anyway. The younger he settles into both arms and lifts slightly so he can look her in the face, "We are friends, little one. Are you all right?"

At the same time he asks the question, he curses the tower and its administrators. It had been bad enough to see someone as young as Sephiroth here, but the boy can at least protect himself. This little one is even younger and seems to have no way of protecting herself. Diarmuid is extremely thankful that he was able to get to them in time.

When Diarmuid sets her down, Sheba brings her knees up and wraps her arms around them, resting her head on her arms so that she can take a few moments to just breathe. That had been too close for comfort - whatever that thing on the twenty-fourth floor was, it was terrifying. It was lucky that Diarmuid had been so close by, that he'd been able to get Yotsuba out safely...

She shifts a little so that she can glance up at Yotsuba. The girl looks shaken and a little worse for the wear, but she's not dead, and that's what matters most.

Diarmuid has already asked the child if she's alright, so for now, Sheba keeps quiet.

Whatever the monster was, that floor was certainly a thing to be avoided. Thank god.....if Diarmuid and that other girl had not made it in time....

While Edgeworth did not sit down like Sheba did, he took a tissue out of his pocket (curse the lack of handkerchiefs) and wiped his forehead. That was certainly frightening, but thank god it's over and nobody was hurt.

After putting the tissue back in his pocket, he turned to Diarmuid and bowed. "I am forever in your debt." And then he turned to Sheba. "The same for you, Miss, er..."

"Good." There is relief in Diarmuid's eyes when the girl claims she is okay. Actually, for her age, she seems to be taking things very well. He hopes that is the case anyway. He doesn't want to think she's learned at such a young age to hide things.

He smiles at her and ruffles her hair, but doesn't set her down as he turns to address the others. Part of him is worried something might set her off running into trouble again and another close call is probably the last thing anyone wants right now.

"What happened? Did you lose the list I gave you?" This question is directed toward Edgeworth, though there is no anger or anything like that in his voice. "This floor is marked as one of the more dangerous ones because of that shadow." His voice drops to a mutter, "Though this is why putting warnings on the doors themselves might be a good idea. If they would stay. I don't know if they would or not..."

"Though, that isn't really important for now. My name is Diarmuid Ua Duibhne," his introduction is for the two girls who he hasn't met before. "I actually share a room with Edgeworth. I'm glad that I was able to get here in time to help. If you ever need help again, I would hope you will come looking for me. I do routinely patrol the floors for reasons just like this one."

When Yotsuba speaks, Sheba lets out a sigh of relief. All in all, this has worked out much better than she'd originally thought it would.

Her gaze flicks to Edgeworth when he addresses her. "Sheba. My name is Sheba." Then she smiles and looks from the prosecutor to the man who had quite literally dragged her out of danger. "It's nice to meet you... both of you."

Then to Yotsuba - "I'm glad you're not hurt."

Her eyes return to Diarmuid after a moment, though, because the talk of patrols has piqued her interest. "I guess with speed like yours, you'd be able to get almost anywhere very quickly. That's really useful!"

“Likewise,” Edgeworth replied. “Again, I owe both you and Diarmuid a great debt.” And with that, he turned to Diarumid to answer his question.
“No, I haven’t lost it,” he replied, taking his organizer out of his jacket and pulling the said note out of it. “I took your warnings quite seriously. However, had a certain young lady not decided to leave my sight and run straight into danger...” With that, the prosecutor turned to Yotsuba with a frown.

“I certainly hope you don’t that again, Yotsuba. I told you that this place was dangerous. Thank heavens these two came along before anything terrible happened.”

Sorry, Yotsuba. Edgeworth really was worried about you and he felt that someone had to tick you off so that nothing like this happened again.

Diarmuid nods to Sheba, "Yes it is. High speed and agility are both trademarks of my class. It makes me well suited for patrolling the tower whenever I can, which is why I spend so much time doing so. Unfortunately, I cannot save everyone, but there are times when I can save people and that is what makes it worthwhile."

He turns his attention back to the girl in his arms, "Edgeworth is right, little one. I know it must be hard to be in a place like this and be careful when you probably want to learn everything you can about it, " his daughter'd had the same strong curiosity that this girl seems to have, after all, "but you do need to be careful. You don't want to make the people who care about you sad, do you? And besides, it would not be nearly so fun to explore with an injury, would it?"

Death would also make it pretty hard to explore, but he doesn't want to scare her too much. Besides, at her age, it can be very hard to tell how much she actually understands. Some children at this age understand very quickly and easily. Others aren't quite ready for those kind of thought processes yet.

"You're welcome." She smiles at the green-haired child. "We were both really lucky that Diarmuid was here to help, huh?"

She shakes her head at Edgeworth, though - because she simply doesn't feel like she can agree with him. "You don't owe me anything. We should all look out for each other, while we're stuck here. That's all there is to it."

For a moment or two, she looks thoughtful. Diarmuid seems to be doing a really great thing; that's... honestly something she'd like to be able to do, too. "If you could ever use another person while patrolling, I'd be willing to help. We can cover more ground that way, right?"

As the two men address Yotsuba, she falls silent; they have the "lecture" part of this handled, she thinks. Chiming in to agree with them would almost be like beating a dead horse.

It was the shouts from the stairs that had drawn Saki's attention. She didn't recognize the little girl's voice, and her one encounter with the man hadn't necessarily been pleasant, but it sounded like he was trying to protect her. The past encounter didn't matter in that moment, anyway. What mattered now? There was a little girl in trouble.

Neither of them would have noticed Saki transforming before she ran into the room, as she'd picked a dark corner of the stairs to do it. What they would, however, quickly notice: an approaching shout of "Pietra di Tuono!" and what looked like an electric yo-yo coming from behind Edgeworth's position on the stairs, over his head, and in the monster's direction.

Once it connected with the monster, Saki went running forward, her short hair growing longer as she ran. It was a drain on her magic, but there was a little girl in trouble, and she could get her Soul Gem purified later. She needed the boost in her speed to get there fast enough to get there while the monster was distracted, scoop Yotsuba up into her arms, and run her back towards the stairs as quick as she could.

"I'm Saki. I'm a magical girl, and it's going to be all right now, I promise," she said, carefully setting the little girl on her feet before turning to Edgeworth. "Get her out of here - the floor above this one is safe, and you can make sure she's not hurt or anything once you get there. I've got the monster. There will be time for explanations later, just make sure she's okay."

Edgeworth darted his eyes around the room, trying to look for something, anything, he could do or even use to distract the monster. But the room was empty!

He did not notice Saki transforming on the stairs. However, the magical girl's cry caught his attention and he nearly ducked when he saw some...whatever that electrical thing was....fly towards, no, over his head, and head straight towards the monster. Before he knew it, someone was dashing towards Yotsuba, picking her up and carrying her straight back. It was only when Saki reached the stairs and put Yotsuba down that he managed to get a proper look at the older girl and realise that he had seen her somewhere. Now was not a good moment to try and dwell on that, though. Now he had to get Yotsuba out of here.

Trying to take the smaller child’s hand, he faced Saki. “Very well. Be careful” He did not have a choice, really. Whether the older girl would survive, he did not know but she was clearly more capable of handling it than he was. Any fool could see that. Was it possible for him to get help?

If the prosecutor successfully grabbed Yotsuba's hand, he then tried to drag her up the stairs to the next floor. No matter what happened, he had to get her to safety.

Saki knelt down at a side angle, so she could keep one eye on the monster as she spoke to Yotsuba.

"It's nice to meet you, Yotsuba-chan. Magical girls are here to help people that are in trouble. It's our job to fight monsters, so that they don't hurt anyone. You don't have to worry about me, because I'll be just fine. What's most important right now is that you go with your friend, okay? I want to make sure that you're not hurt, and there's not a safe place here for you to get checked out. I'll make sure to check on both of you later."

She nodded to Edgeworth as she stood up. "Don't worry. I'll be fine, and I'll touch base with both of you upstairs once I've taken care of this thing. It shouldn't be too long. Be safe!"

With a last nod to both of them, she ran back, reaching for the riding crop at her hip. She fully intended to buy them some time by sending lightning down its length and straight towards the monster's head, establishing herself as the target.

"Understood." And with that, Edgeworth and Yotsuba made their way upstairs.

The prosecutor was quite taken aback when he suddenly found himself in a flower meadow. Then he remembered that Diarmuid had told him that there was a meadow in the tower which was perfectly safe. This fitted in with the fact that the girl who had just saved Yotsuba had told them that this floor was not dangerous.

Edgeworth let go of Yotsuba's hand as he tried to catch his breath from the shock of that monster and all that chasing Yotsuba up all those floors before then.

Still, before he could relax, Edgeworth had to make sure of one thing. "Are you all right, Yotsuba?" Now might be a good time for a lecture.

Kyoko is already in her Puella Magi form when she runs down the stairs after hearing a scream. It only takes her an instant to access the situation; in her occupation, being unable to think quickly is the same thing as death. She'd seen that shadowy mass before. It was dangerous, impossible to kill (seriously, what a pain,) but easy enough to retreat from when necessary. So, she jumped off of the staircase to place herself between Edgeworth and the monster. She barely acknowledged the man at all, really, outside of a loud "get back!" The task at hand was all she could focus on.

Her hands clasped together, as though she intended to merely pray to God, and in that instant, a brilliant red chain barrier would spring up between Yotsuba and the shadowy mass. In that same instant, dozens of spears would spring from the floor to pierce it. It wouldn't kill it, wouldn't even make a dent in it, but he factors should combine to create a suitable distraction.

Next Kyoko would spring forward with a speed that should have been impossible for a girl her size in order to reach the girl. She would make a grab for her, this girl who looked to be no older than her sister. If she was successful, she would attempt to lift her up in order fling her over her shoulder. It's far from a graceful gesture, she was no longer used to treating people with the gentle care that one might have hoped to be treated with (and really, who had time for that in these life-or-death situations anyway?) Even so, she's not intentionally rough.

Edgeworth heard Kyoko's yell but did not have time to turn around until he saw the girl land on the ground. Where did that girl come from? She could be in danger as well....

And he would have told her that, had she not started conjuring up those.....chains? And spears?

Okay, no time to stand there and gawp. Whoever this girl was, she had come to their aid. Had she not appeared, things would have potentially ended very badly, to put it mildly.

"This way!" the prosecutor yelled at the top of his voice once Kyoko had Yotsuba slung over her shoulder. Whether Kyoko's magic would have any effect or not, Edgeworth had no idea but getting Yotsuba to safety was the top priority for now. Hopefully that girl would not be killed too....

"I'm not on that thing's side, if that's what you're wondering," was Kyoko's response as she retreated back to the staircase. That barrier wouldn't last long and she had no intention of getting killed here. Holding onto Yotsuba, making sure that the girl wouldn't fall, she nodded in response to Edgeworth. She'd follow his lead for now. Hopefully he knew where he was going.

Edgeworth was actually heading downstairs and not to the meadow although this was because he did not really know which floor he was on and not because he did not know where he was going. Logically, Edgeworth thought that the sensible thing would be to go back the way he came - for all he knew, going upstairs might just lead to more monsters and he was not planning to explore those floors with a defenceless toddler. Going down, he knew that he would eventually be able to reach the safe floors - the cafeteria, the library, etc.

Follow him or stop him?

"And run a higher risk of running into more monsters?" Edgeworth called back, still heading down the stairs. “The library and cafeteria are this way, at least. And so is.....the elevator.”

Edgeworth’s heart filled with dread when he heard the word ‘elevator’. Perhaps Kyoko and Yotsuba could take it once they were down there and he would follow them later, making an excuse as to why he could not join them? So that neither of them could discover one of his most crippling fears. It was humiliating enough that Maya and that weird silver-haired boy with teleportation powers knew about it. The prosecutor had seen monsters (and avoided) in the tower and he had been in his fair share of life-threatening situations at home as well. He had even remained calm and in control when being at gun-point. However, elevators? They were a different story. Being orphaned thanks to a murder in one of those things did that to you.

Hang on a minute, would making Kyoko and Yotsuba board the elevator with him joining them later be a really sensible idea? Either Edgeworth would have to buck up and board the wretched thing himself and hope against hope that he did not faint on the way up or he would have to loiter around and (grudgingly) wait for chaos to show up.

Also, Kyoko was a fighter, with weird magical superpowers. There was a good chance she had explored the whole of the tower and knew most of its dangers. If she said that heading up the tower would make more sense, there was a good chance that she knew what she was talking about.

Edgeworth had already made it to the twenty-second floor (Funny, he had the strange feeling that he had passed another floor even though he did not remember it. This happened when the prosecutor was chasing Yotsuba upstairs although he had no time to dwell on it then) before he eventually stopped and turned around to make sure that Kyoko was still following him. And to make sure that the monster was not tailing behind.

She frowned at this statement, but nodded in a quiet acceptance. He had a point. The elevator was more convenient, and a small child probably wouldn't handle towering the stairs after an experience like that. So, rather than argue, Kyoko followed Edgeworth obediently, Yotsuba still slung over her shoulder, but stopped as Edgeworth did. She took the brief lapse in running as an opportunity to set Yotsuba down on the staircase, giving her a lopsided grin.

"You okay, kid? Getting grabbed like that must've been a surprise. Here, you want one?" She sighed, pulling out a box of pocky as she spoke, looking up to Edgeworth after a moment with a slight shrug. "Ah, that monster won't leave that floor, y'know."

"So it won't follow us?" At first, Edgeworth found this a little hard to believe. However, he then realised that considering this strange girl probably knew more about the rest of the tower than he did, she was probably right.

With that, Edgeworth glanced around to make sure no other monsters were coming their way. When he was satisfied, he decided to sit down. Running several floors upstairs and then having to run back down because of that, well, thing, really took the breath out of you.

"Pocky. It's a kind of candy." Then, to Edgeworth--"Yeah. What, you out of breath already?" There was a barely contained amusement in her voice.. Kyoko pulled a stick out for herself before replacing it. That done, she sat down, stretching out on the staircase. She leaned back on a few steps, rested her elbows on them. It was hardly comfortable, but it would do for now.

"Well, excuse me for being a normal person who has had to chase a little girl up several flights of stairs," Edgeworth replied, giving a quick disappointed look at Yotsuba.

When Yotsuba asked her question to Kyoko, he said nothing, although he could not help but be curious about Kyoko's abilities. There was a possibility that she might refuse to talk about them, however, and he should be careful not to provoke her. Especially not when he accidentally helped start drama on the network the month before.

Kyoko quirked an eyebrow at Edgeworth's response as she snicked quietly, but ultimately chose to focus on the girl's question. Her powers weren't something she openly advertized, but so long as she was here there was no particular reason to hide them. So, she raised her index finger and grinned as she launched into her explanation.

"Magic. I'm a magical girl, y'know...things like summoning a weapon or a barrier are child's play for a person like me, y'know."

(ooc: I'm sorry this is so late! I've been sick, so that threw me off track. I'll understand if you don't feel up to continuing.)

A magical girl? Was this girl a wizard? Or was she some superhero? Like the Steel Samurai? Edgeworth wanted to ask more but decided that doing so would probably not be wise. Kyoko's powers did not seem to be relevant to the mysteries of the tower besides the fact that the administrators were able to bring people with various superpowers, anyway.

The prosecutor decided to focus on Yotsuba's question instead, to which he replied, "And use that as an excuse to run into more danger? What a frightening thought."

"It's like being a solider, just you're fighting against monsters instead of humans. Becoming a magical girl, you know, means placing your life on the line every minute of every day--and the only way out is to die." Her voice grew unusually serious as she gave her explanation. It was unlikely that a girl this young could completely understand what she was saying, but that was all the more reason why she couldn't sugarcoat it. She couldn't accept somebody who had no particular problems in their life taking up this job, believing it to be glamorous.

Even so, a smile crossed her face as her moved to pat Yotsuba's head, adding onto Edgeworth's comment, "It's not the kind of job that a person with a family to go back to should be taking on. That guy's got one thing right. I'm sure your family'd be worried sick if they knew what kind of trouble you've been getting yourself into."
