[ The most alarming thing to Duke isn't really the inability to move shortly after waking. Its the lack of familiar clothing.

The note is left alone until after the knight fishes out at least the undershirt of the uniform and pulls it on. The weird white clothing can come off another time, as getting some protection on seems like the best idea in the new place.

There's just a blank and resigned look at the letter. Destroyed? Eh... ]

Did they just argue until it all came down, or something? Idiots...

[ And then its just time to get the rest of the armor on. New place but 'let's be happy?' Uhhuh, sure. Armor is probably never going to come off now. ]

[ Cafeteria ]
[ So plain oatmeal isn't the most fascinating thing to eat ever, but the knight is just sort of eating with that steadiness that says someone is half asleep. That, or food is food.

Either way, Duke is watching the rest of the people here, although hopefully the knight looks a bit sleepy. ]

[ Floor 12 ]
[ Duke just watches that for a moment. ]

.... Not what I was expecting. Although if they couldn't see it... Odd, but..

[ So maybe the knight is going to crouch and watch for a bit. ]

[ Floor 3 ]
[ So maybe Duke will be spending a lot of time here. Just maybe.

Might be hinted at by the way the knight just sort of paces through the entire thing a few times before really looking at bookcovers. ]

...That is unsettling, as well. But it makes these stories all the worse, knowing they could be real worlds out there, real enough to be destroyed, for the people whom you read about, after following their adventures and triumphs...for them to find themselves here.

And shivers once. Definitely creepy. ]

Think it would be worse, depending on the perspective of the story.

It's one of the reasons I hope that the label of "fantasy" is true. Though I would like to meet some of the people I read of, I wouldn't want it to be here.

Like reading a historical text, and wishing to meet a favored figure. Or a hero-figure.

[ Duke ends up fascinated by some of fictional methods of magic, but... ]

Only setting makes all the difference.

Yes, I suppose it is like that... *That inadvertently reminded him of home. To be precise, a very specific person he'd met. Someone who had only wanted to meet the hero she'd been hearing so many stories about...*

The only difference is that they're removed from us, you're right.

*A pause as he reflects on the conversation so he doesn't have to think too much about Earth.*

...In that light, the possibility of being someone's fantasy doesn't seem so disturbing, I think. It isn't so different from being a legend.

Just the uncomfortable sense of "why did that make it through time and not this?"

[ Duke offers an uneasy smile. ]

We... had, a case of 'history was clear and really not clear' quite recently, home.

Ah, the distortion of a story passed on through the generations. It can start to distort as early as two people removed.

...But you look uneasy about it. *He seemed genuinely worried, even though he'd just met this person, didn't even know their name.*

[ Duke leans on a shelf. ]

The idea that 'history repeats itself'? It was going on. If this world destroying thing hadn't been everywhere, I'd have thought that's what got home.

Because of a distorted story, so no one knew what its true wisdom was?

*He wonders how something like that could escalate into a world facing destruction...*

A forgotten story, I think. We forgot why we were watching over lands, and... it became 'Oh, look at this shiny, it can be used to make things easier.'. And those that knew had nearly been wiped out last time it happened... so they attacked first rather than talked and... A mess.

[ That, and who would listen to a creature half the size of your castle when it said your well, lights, heating units and shield-wall were going to cause problems. It sounds like 'take down your defenses so I can eat you', or something. ]

*Enoch is still envisioning normal-sized armies, after all... Probably not of humans considering the seeming long memory, but all the same human-sized.*
