Tear's Big Project, Day 1

Characters: Tear Grants and YOU
Setting: The meadow on Floor 25
Format: Starting action, reply as you wish.
Summary: This is the first of the two days for Tear's offer of training in magic. There will be closed parts for certain people and a few open sections.
Warnings:  Magic, fighting, Luke and Asch in the same area with pointy things, possible explosions?

[Tear made her way to the meadow thirty minutes early, a book in her hand as she made that way. She looked around at the empty space and grimaced. Why she'd thought this was a good idea, she'd never know, but she was determined to see if she could get the residents of this Tower of Horror to arm themselves in light of the recent problems with the administration.]

Closed for Luke fon Fabre (OU)

[If the redhead looked carefully enough, he'd see the brunette looking off into the distance at the flowers as she waited for the others to gather.]

Closed for Asch the Bloody, Sheba and Xion
[She'd decided to work on the redheads away from one another, but any friends they brought were fine. She'd expected to see the blond after their exchange on the network.

Closed for V/V, AU Link and Zelda
[She couldn't wait to introduce her two new friends to one another. Link had training with bows and swords. Between those, Tear was sure that V/V would find something she could use.]

Open Section for Magic Training
[This was perhaps the most anxious part of the entire ordeal—trying to figure out how the magics of so many worlds worked and to see if those interested could actually learn to use the Seventh Fonon, or if she was going to be spending her night telling them all how to do battle first aid.

Only time would tell, right?]

Open Section for Fighting Training
[As opposed to the magic training, this, this she had no issue with. She was a proficient with her staffs, maces and knives. Besides, she'd learned as a child that anything could be used as a weapon in times of need. And with the many sword wielders as she'd met since coming to the tower, she knew that this would be fine!]

[That would probably wind up making things awkward, yes. Patchouli might take some pride in her appearance - truth be told, she would be much more reluctant to come at all were this during the daytime; sunlight bleaches the violet right out of her hair - but getting called 'cute' would have just led to stammering and blushing.

She's adorable, yes, but she's also a magic powerhouse.]

In that case, please call me Patchouli. It's a pleasure to meet you.

I'd explained a little bit about the kind of magic system that's in place back home, but the rules are simple: we use what are called 'spell cards'. They're magical displays, tailored to each spellcaster. The point of them is to show off the magical ability of the caster while being nonlethal - your clothing might get a bit singed if you don't dodge something, but you won't really get hurt.

In most duels, each participant prepares three spell cards ahead of time. You're allowed to try to throw the caster off with your own magic bullets - again, the worst they'll do is leave you bruised - or use one of your own spell cards to counter any card you can't handle, but of course, that leaves you with fewer in your own arsenal. The ideal method of going about a duel back home is to dodge and weave your way through the pattern of the spell card itself, while attempting to knock the caster off-balance, while your opponent does the same. The one who does this two out of three times wins the duel.

There are all sorts of magic specialties, but I'm an elemental magician by training. I'd prepared one of my own spell cards, if you'd like to see?

Not in a duel, no. The rules were different, once, and people did die over them, on both sides. I've been fully informed of the situation here by someone that is from my own world and is been here a long time, though.

I'm fully prepared to modify what I can do as a means of self-defense. I'd prefer not to have to kill someone if I can help it, but one does what one must, in a situation like this.

[And then Patchouli grins.]

I'm a bit traditional in my methods - the five traditional elements, wood, fire, earth, metal, and water, but the sun and the moon can influence those. When they're combined, one or two or even the five traditional ones, the possibilities are fairly endless.

[She'll take a moment to fly - yes, fly - upward, well out of range of anyone that she could possibly injure with a stray bullet. Once she's settled, she starts to cast.]

[It takes the magician a few minutes to catch her breath, when she floats back down. A spell like that takes a lot out of her, but she was determined to cast it.]

I'm already thinking of how I can convert it to combat situations - the single beams, at least, ought to be easy enough, and I'm focusing on those as a start. Those are a matter of focusing energy on a single point, and then, if you want the beam to change direction...

[Patchouli tilts her head a little. She can explain it in a lot of ways, but the one that's always made the most sense?]

If you know how a prism works, it's the same principle, more or less. If you imagine a mental prism in the place you want it to be, it will refract a beam of magic, the same way a physical prism refracts light and shows a rainbow.

[She nods at that explanation, but the word 'fonon' is new.]

'Fonon'? I'm familiar with a lot of magical terms, but that one's a new one to me. It doesn't bother me at all, but I'm curious as to what they are.

Ah, that makes sense. So it's the smallest essence of a thing, if I'm understanding correctly?

[She nods her head.]

So many words, for the same concept - it's fascinating, really...

[Patchouli nods. It's starting to come together for her, and her eyes light up with excitement.]

It's really not any different than the elements I work with, then. I'd say that everything is made up of some combination of elemental essences, but the wording doesn't matter at all. It's all in how they're used. Your fonons and my elements really aren't much different, at their core.

...you know, you'd probably be a natural at the kind of spellcrafting I did a few minutes ago, with a little bit of guidance. I just wish I could teach the flying part, but that's something that I don't know how to teach - I've always been able to do it. Maybe I can get an acquaintance of mine to enchant something for you to give you the ability, but normally, flying can't be taught, I'm afraid. It either comes naturally or you have to have some kind of magic tool that lets you fly. Well, no, maybe if the shrine maiden who has control over the wind were here, she could teach you to control the winds enough to get you in the air, but she's kind of an airhead, so I don't know if she'd really - oh, no, I'm getting off track.

[That's actually a bit of a laugh - Patchouli isn't making fun of Tear at all. She actually means what she's just said. It doesn't happen often at all from her, and it's really cute when it does. But she's back to being serious a moment later.]

The question, then: on Auldrant, how do you manipulate these fonons?

[Forgive her wordiness; that's exactly what she was saying. She was just trying to figure out a way she could teach the flight part, too.]

Planet Storm? Interesting...hearing things like this makes me wish my own world weren't behind a barrier so that I could see such things myself. Yes, please, I'd love to see a demonstration.
witchoftheweek: (perhaps I underestimated you)

[personal profile] witchoftheweek 2013-06-14 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[That gets a bright smile as a response - she would categorize that as a Moon and Fire combination, herself, a rare one, and she appreciates it even more for its rarity, even if she knows it's not technically one. Either way? Patchouli can appreciate the technique and the beauty inherent within the spell. It's impressive.]

That's really impressive, I have to say - the technique's beautiful in and of itself. Which of your fonons were involved in that?
