010 ♃ it's all a game of this or that, now versus then
Characters: Sheba and... wait for it... YOU! And also closed threads for Asch, Saturos, and Xion.
Setting: The music room and the restaurant for open prompts, and the library, the dorms, and floor 52 for closed prompts!
Format: Brackets because I am too tired to prose at the moment that I'm writing this. But I can switch if you want!
Summary: First, Sheba deals with some fallout regarding a castmate's arrival. Next, she gets distracted by music. Then, she gets hungry and goes on a quest for restaurant food.
Warnings: She's toned down her mind reading by a lot, but may try and peek at your character's thoughts if they say something that makes her curious. It's up to you if she succeeds in finding anything, though! Also, the last prompt may involve character injury or death. c:
[Library - backdated to just after this thread, closed to Asch.]
[This just feels really awkward.
She hasn't met Asch's eyes since he'd essentially chased Saturos away. For as much as she's found out about his past by reading his mind and sifting through his memories (and even that isn't much), she hasn't come anywhere near as close to sharing as much about her own past. Talking about Saturos had been the furthest thing from her mind, anyway - a small part of her had known that even people who had died on their worlds could appear here, but she'd never in a million years thought that she'd see the Proxian again.
She glances at Asch out of the corner of her eye and sighs as they make their way to a more secluded section of the library. She still has no idea what to say, aside from -]
Um... thank you, for before.
[Dorm floor 2 hallway near room 02-05 and 02-06 - backdated to in the evening after the above thread with Asch, closed to Saturos.]
[It's been a long day. Sheba would like nothing more than to fall into bed and sleep (though she knows it's not really a bed), and in fact she has every intention of doing just that as soon as she gets to her room.
But she has to pause as she approaches, because there's a familiar figure - too familiar, and not in the good way - standing at a door right near hers.
She sighs heavily when she realizes what it must be. Great. First they take away Felix and replace him with Saturos, and now his room is this close? She figures she must have really pissed someone off.
Her earlier reprieve had just been temporary, it seemed.]
...Saturos. Hello again.
[Floor 28 music room - not backdated, open.]
[There are more important things she could be doing with her time, and she's aware of that, but sometimes a girl just needs to relax. This is one of them.
It doesn't particularly bother her that the instruments are playing all on their own. She's sitting off a few feet from the staircase, near a harp, munching on some food brought up from the cafeteria for her lunch and watching the strings pluck themselves to try and get an idea of what strings make what sound. She'd never really learned to play an instrument on Weyard, but it was easy to see - or rather, hear - the appeal.]
I guess it's never a bad time to learn something new...
[The words are spoken mostly to herself, but are said out loud - loud enough for someone on the stairs to hear, certainly.]
[Floor 21 restaurant to start - not backdated, open to the first person to reply to it.
NOTE: There's a risk of death/injury in this prompt.]
[It's dinnertime and Sheba's mouth is watering. She knows - knows - that it's not safe to eat at the restaurant, but she can't help it. She's got her eye on some of the dishes they're not serving in the cafeteria, and she just can't get it out of her mind.
If someone else decides to eat with her, she decides, she'll find out what it is they want and they can go hunt down the cost of their meal together. Whether it's a friend or someone she's never really spoken to, she flags down the next person to pass onto the floor with a smile.]
Hey! Were you thinking about eating at the restaurant?
[Floor 52 - July 20, closed to Xion]
[Sheba would be kicking herself if the situation weren't dire. She and Xion are covered in blood, looking rather worse for the wear, and are now in the center of a floor that seems to be made of playing cards. They can't just run for the staircase - being dumped onto the floor by a Floormaster counted for putting up the blockade the same way that stepping onto the floor did.
(Note to self: Next time she and Xion hang out, they leave to catch the elevator before it gets dark, so a Floormaster can't grab them as they're waiting for it to arrive.)
She winces and gets to her feet, looking down at the pattern warily.]
How are we going to get out of this one...?

How are we going to get out of this one...?

Floor 21! Because this is probably a bad idea.
Until Sheba just happens to flag her down at this exact moment. Amelia does manage to smile at her, a little bit surprised to see her here but she can understand why. It does sound like the food here is better...]
Sheba! I haven't seen you in awhile... sure? I mean, I've thought about eating here once or twice although I half expect it to be trapped somehow. [This is said in a perfectly casual tone of voice, she's starting to get used to most of the Tower trying to kill everyone.]
Bad ideas are the best ideas.
[Amelia with getting killed, Sheba with... making questionable friends, really. These things happened. At least Amelia was one friend she had who didn't have a rather ambiguous set of morals.
She glances at the entrance to the restaurant, then at Amelia.]
It's not trapped, but to pay for the food we have to find something specific and bring it to them. If we don't, they take something from us. [She sighs.] I keep telling myself I shouldn't do it, but the food smells so good... and if there's two of us, I'm sure we can team up and find both our items very quickly! Don't you think?
Hell yes they are.
And it sucked enough last time.
But kicking back and having a meal with a friend would be a nice moment, something almost resembling normal in this place. A momentary break from everything, and Sheba so far seems to be one of the few people who's... well. Sane. It could backfire horribly, but perhaps it could be a useful bit of training too. Learn something new about one of the Tower's floors or something.]
That's a pretty good point... I mean, I'll admit this might not be a good idea? But sure, why not. Might as well do it now while we have one of the less crazy Admins in charge.[And if it does get them killed, well... it'll be a lesson learned.]
no subject
[This wasn't the first bad idea Sheba'd ever had. It probably wouldn't be the last. At least she's making bad choices in a place where the consequences aren't really permanent.
She's all smiles as she hefts her staff up to rest on one shoulder and leans back on her heels.]
So - we eat, and then we get asked to pay. Let's get something really good, just in case we can't get the payment and it kills us!
[Only in the Tower could someone say something like that so cheerfully.]
no subject
Right, that makes sense! Going for broke huh? Any idea what kinda stuff they usually ask for payment? I've never actually been here before...
[And in a way, it feels like this is putting the incident they had during Jason's previous month further behind them, even if it could quite possibly get one or both of them killed. At least they won't be trying to kill each other.]
no subject
[And speaking of that - she grins impishly.] I don't know about you, but I can already smell some of the beef they're cooking and it smells great! Let's continue this conversation over dinner, okay?
[
Because the sooner they eat the sooner they can go do dangerous things.]no subject
[If it's a monster, then all they gotta do is find one and then work together to kill it right? She can handle that! Of course there's the possibility of being thrown a curve-ball with this but... she thinks she's prepared for whatever might happen.]
I know the food's probably not real but dammit it smells real enough...
no subject
[Even though the glamour system is essentially a way of lying to them on a massive level, Sheba can't help but be impressed. Like the Tower itself, it's an amazing mechanism - whoever implemented it must have been a genius. She'd love to understand how exactly it works, but she doesn't really see the administrators being at all inclined to share that information with her anytime soon.
Regardless, it was time for dinner. With a smile, she heads into the restaurant with Amelia. Soon enough they'll be seated and will have their orders taken.]
no subject
[Where does she even start with all this food? She knows ordering more than she can actually eat is probably silly, but it all sounds so damn good... oh what the hell. Beef and just pile it on, that's what she's gunning for here.]
I know most of the rooms here are pretty much designed to kill us, but between some of the nicer rooms and the worker units... if it weren't for the people running it? I'd almost call this a nice place to stay.
no subject
[Sheba shrugs and idly drums her fingertips against the table - as awful as things have been (and they have been awful), she's met people and made memories that she would never want to give up. It's a terrible bargain, putting herself and all the people still trapped on Weyard in danger just for the chance to make new friends.]
There are some days when I think that it's almost worth it. [She sighs.] But then I remember... it isn't, not really. It's selfish of me to be glad that I've had the chance to meet... um, certain people here. [There's a pause before she smiles up at Amelia sheepishly.] So many of the things the administrators do make me so angry. I want to stop them, and I want to go home and save everyone. But... I don't want to have to say goodbye to the good people I've met here. You know?
...I guess I should start getting used to the idea, though. There's only a year left. Less than that, actually...
no subject
... she honestly isn't sure she can say she regrets coming here, or if she had the option if she would have chosen any differently.]
I know what you mean... I mean. This place is horrible. The people in charge of it are horrible. We've been through things no person should have to go through, and I've heard there are plenty who have been through even worse than us. But if we'd never come here, there's so many people we would have never met...
I want to save our worlds too, but is it wrong if I hope after we win, there's a way we can all still see each other again? [Maybe it's a little presumptive to assume they're going to win. But it's a nice thought... winning, turning the Tower into something good, saving all of their worlds...]
no subject
[She likes Amelia's optimism. When, not if. That's the kind of thinking she wants to hold fast to here - she knows very well that from here on out things are only going to get more and more difficult, and that kind of positive thinking is going to be a godsend as it gets harder to keep going.]
But... you know, we know that there are all sorts of different worlds out there, now. If we ever make it back home... [Her voice trails off as she considers it. Travel between worlds would probably be next to impossible, but clearly it could happen.] We'll all know that the others are out there somewhere, won't we? We can take what we've learned here and try to use what we can to come up with our own way to travel between worlds.
no subject
[That's when another idea seems to occur to her, her eyes widening slightly as she considers it.] Or wait, what if we find the secret to moving between worlds here in the Tower and take it home with us?
no subject
[Sheba grins widely and leans forward. They clearly had a lot to learn about how things worked in the Tower, but there was a chance that if they could figure it out, they could recreate some of the technology on wherever it was they ended up when this was all over... assuming they didn't all fade from existence.]
Maybe the libraries will have something useful, if we can't find the technology itself or can't take it with us. We may have to dig a little deeper than we'd like, but... you never know.
no subject
[Probably with like a dozen deathtraps or something too... not that she figured it would stop them, especially with death being temporary here. Of course she kinda had to wonder about that too, why they kept bringing people back but...]
But if we could find it and somehow take a bit of that knowledge with us... it wouldn't be too different from like, sailing across the ocean for the first time or something, right? Then all of our worlds could be connected!
no subject
[She wonders if they're down in the administrative levels, or maybe even somewhere else in the Tower. She agrees that the administrators would hardly leave crucial information just lying around, but she thinks that if they learn enough separate parts, they can combine them into something much greater.]
I'd like that a lot. I'd feel better about whatever might come in the next year if I knew for sure that I'd still be able to see the friends I've made here...
no subject
[But where would the Admins keep that kinda knowledge hidden away...?]
At least we've got most of a year left to figure it out? I mean... [She pauses right there, blinking a couple of times as another fact just sort of hits her. Slowly she leans back in her chair, managing a quiet chuckle.]
You know what I just realized? I've been here nearly as long as I was in the war back home. It doesn't feel like it was all that long ago...
no subject
[Sheba smiles, but the expression is bittersweet.] It's the same for me. I've been here for almost as long as I was with my friends from Weyard. It's strange to think about, don't you think?
...if we stay here until everything ends one way or another, we'll have been here longer than we were on our worlds during some of the most important years of our lives.
no subject
[Not just because she'll be older, but because of how much more experienced she'll be. Being through hell has its perks, she's learned a great deal while she's been here and there's been no shortage of chances to hone her skills further. She's pretty sure her technique's even better by this point than it was when she got here, maybe even near Duessel's level. Maybe.
And on top of that she's learned how to be quite a bit more independent, trusting more in her own skills and judgement. She's had to make some extremely difficult snap decisions here.
One of which happened to involve the girl sitting across from her right now.]
no subject
I guess there's only one way to find out, and that's to make it back.
[By now their food has probably already come, been eaten, and gone. It's time for them to get started on paying the restaurant back for all that. A small slip of paper is slid in front of each of them - much like a receipt. If Amelia looks at hers, she'll see what her meal will cost her in clean, crisp handwriting:
One (1) canopic jar.]
no subject
Alright. That's unexpected, I don't suppose you know what a... canopic jar is? They're probably not talking about just any old jar.
[And it's at this point her mind begins to wander onto the subject of what they might take from her if they can't find it. Would it be an object or like, an actual body part?]
What'd you get?
no subject
[
Lalivero might have been based on Ancient Egypt, but that didn't mean Sheba knew anything about making mummies. She furrows her brow and reaches over to pick up Amelia's receipt, then puffs her cheeks out in annoyance. It would have been nice if they'd been a little more clear about where to find such a thing. ...then again, the Tower wasn't known for being nice.
She looks down at her own receipt and reads it before sighing heavily.]
A hallucinogenic mushroom.
[She's not sure she wants to try tasting every mushroom she finds to figure out if it will work or not.]
no subject
There are floors that she knows has mushrooms, but just grabbing them at random and hoping one does the trick seems a little too reckless. The frown on her face is nothing short of intense right now.]
Well... crap. How long do we have again to find these?
no subject
[It gave them a little leeway. It might be possible for them to head to the library and look up what a "canopic jar" was, or to ask people on the network about where to find these things, but if no one knew or no one was willing to help, and they kept waiting and ran out of time...]
We should probably get started.
no subject
At least it was a damn good meal.]
Yeah, I think you might be right about that... I don't really want to find out the hard way what they're going to take from us if we run out of time. [Hopefully nothing too important if they failed.]
