Summary: Aleph is in search of something in particular: a Bible. He has no success and eventually retires to the meadow.

[Floor 3]
[The first place to look would of course be the library.

But, it seems that religion and history are intertwined, and the histories of the worlds aren't covered in this library. No matter how hard he searches, Aleph can't find a single religious tract or book of divine scripture.

He's basically going to check every section of the whole library before he gives up, though. It'll take him awhile and make him obviously noticeable.]

[Floor 13]
[Churches generally have religious books in them, don't they? To read from and all.

This one doesn't seem to. It's not a clearly Mesian or Christian church, and he doesn't know well enough to determine if it's anything else, but he thinks its pastors must be hard on their luck if they have to recite everything from memory.

Aleph will turn this floor inside out trying to search, including looking under pews.]

[Floor 19]
[Now, he's pretty sure that this research library doesn't have anything either, but just in case...

He'll go over this entire library section looking, though with less enthusiasm than the other floor's library.]

[Floor 25: afternoon]
[Well that was a waste. Still, it was something to do. And...

Aleph knew vaguely that other worlds had kinder Gods than his had. Different Gods. But he failed completely to understand why they got so upset about the prospect of a different god than theirs being killed. He only sort of knew why Lucifer got such a bad reputation, in the barest possible sense.

He'd been reading books for a year to improve his ability to read, and to not be bereft of all knowledge but how to fight. It seemed time to get around to some of these, if he could find any of them.

Failing that, picking daisies and making them into a flower chain was never a bad use of time.]

No, it's alright. I'm an artificial human, but I can't do anything cool like that.

[ Well, Aleph. You may have made Sertoria happy to find yet another artificial creature here. ]

That is neat! And... You really think it is "cool"? What does temperature have to do with spatial technology...

[He hastily corrects.] Not cool like in temperature. Cool like it's awesome. All I really can do myself without help is fight.

Oh, I see! That makes more sense.

[ A pause. ]

Why is that?

Well, I was made in a world that was very dangerous, with demons everywhere and very few places of human civilization. If I hadn't been able to defend myself, I wouldn't have lasted long at all.

[ Wait, did she hear that right? An artificial human--? ]

So, you are, like me, made by humans? I am sorry to hear about your world, though.

[He nods.] It's all right. My world was worse off than a lot of worlds I hear about here, but it's still home. I'm looking forward to seeing it again when we fix things.

[ Excuse her for a moment, Aleph. She's just excited over this concept. ]

It is good that you have that optimism. You must forgive me, you are the first artificially created human I have come across.

It's nice to have someone like you, isn't it? [like calls to like etc. etc. it makes you feel less alone in the universe.]

It is. It gives me hope, too.

[ Then, it dawns on her. She didn't give him her name. Oops. ]

I am Sertoria Cani, sir. It is a pleasure to meet you.

About a year now, I'm pretty sure.

I've had worse opponents. This battle's just drawn out too long.

You would be right about that. As a seasoned warrior myself, I can tell when a fight has gone on too long.

The time limit's good for us... it may pressure our foe into making mistakes.

If they go with any sort of human philosophy, they will make careless errors since they are pressed for time.

Most people I know who aren't human physically are remarkably human in the mental sense. But that's just my world, perhaps.

[Demons, angels... each of them has a personality, desires and fears. It may very well be the same here.]

[ A nod and then, a slight shake of her head. ]

I concur. It is funny how people work sometimes, hm? Although, it is not just your world.

It is funny. I still don't really understand it myself.

We are alike in that sense, too. Even though I have studied humanity for years, I still do not understand them myself.

You're older than me, then. I'm only about a year and a half total.

I would be ancient if you are only a year and a half old. I am 7,500 years old.
