you should smile, little thing
Characters: au kariya & open.
Setting: out & about. .. ngl he's probs lost.
Format: i action-spam, but feel free to reply in prose if that's more comfortable for you.
Summary: this is one upset little body horror.
Warnings: body.. horror via worm infestation?
[ waking up in a strange place when he'd just been with lancelot had been not only jarring, but extremely upsetting. he'd spent the first few minutes in a terrified haze, vainly searching the room for his servant. he can't sense him anymore, though the seal remains on the back of his right hand. so.. shouldn't that mean he's still here? he'd said he wouldn't leave kariya. he'd sworn it, that he'd be by his side as long as he could.
that had been before saber, though. before he realized he'd have to fight his king for the grail. that he'd have to choose between her and a little boy he barely knew. maybe.. maybe he'd made his decision.
there are letters, but kariya can't focus to read them right now. he's upset and frightened and he hurts. he always hurts these days. father says the pain is a good thing, that it means the crest worms are making him stronger, to take care of his family. kariya doesn't understand it, of course, but if it's what father says, then it must be the truth.
father isn't here. lancelot is gone, father is gone, and kariya is all alone in a strange place and he doesn't know what to do.
he has the presence of mind to fold up the letter, tucking it into a pocket. he slips out, then, little bare feet silent on the floor. he has no idea where he is, and there are rooms everywhere, and stairs, and-- he has no idea where he should go or where he should begin looking. surely, after all, this is a test. father likes testing him. so.. so he can't cry, because crying doesn't do any good. and anyway, it always makes father angry. instead, he takes a deep breath, picks a direction, and starts walking.
residents of the tower may later find a small, white-haired boy with an eyepatch and bare feet wandering the various halls and rooms. ]

[ he trails off, then pauses, chewing his lip as he eyes the other boy. silver hair and such bright eyes-- ] .. Did your hair go white, too? [ he tugs a few strands of his own. ] Mine did a while ago.
no subject
My hair has always been this color. Why did yours change? [It's unusual, and Sephiroth is curious about unusual things.]

[ kariya is as curious about that statement as sephiroth seems to be about his. why is his hair that colour? is he a homunculus? he doesn't seem like one..
at the question, he rubs his scarred arm, shuffling a little from foot to foot. ] Because of the Crest Worms, I guess. My hair went white when I was little. [ he lifts his hand, tugging a little at his eyepatch, sliding it to the side so that sephiroth can see the milky-white orb before he replaces the patch. ] I lost my eye this past year, though. They've never eaten that much of me. [ a pause, and then a little more shyly: ] --Are.. you a homunculus?
no subject
What are Crest Worms? [He continues to ask direct, yet polite questions. They have eaten him? That is interesting. He studies the boy thoughtfully.] They are parasites?
No, I am a genetically engineered human being.

he nods at the question, then shakes his head uncertainly. ] Um. Sort of, I guess. They make my magic stronger, but they live inside me.
[ that sounds like a homunculus, but maybe he's wrong. maybe he was raised like a regular human. still, this boy seems interesting, anyway, and he's enough like an adult in some ways that kariya feels less self-conscious about talking to him. ] .. I'm Kariya.

Magic does not function that way in my world. How do they work?
My name is Sephiroth. I am pleased to meet you, Kariya. I have been here for seven months. If you have any questions, I can answer them.

[ he's so matter-of-fact.. kariya wishes he could at least pretend to be. he's so shaken up, though, that it's all he can do to try not to stammer. ] I-- What sorts of things do you think I should know?
no subject
[Sephiroth considers Kariya's question seriously before replying in the same calm, emotionless tone he has used all this time.]
We have been brought here from different worlds, and our worlds are said to have been destroyed. This tower is run by administrators who control us, although their control is not complete, and some are acting to resist them. Everything you see here is an illusion, including our own bodies. Only our souls are present.
There are monsters on almost all of the floors, especially at night, so I would recommend remaining in the dorms at night, unless you are willing to engage in combat. It is very dangerous. Some of the monsters are quite powerful, and some cannot be defeated by any means.
[Judging by the large sword Sephiroth is carrying on his back, he is probably willing to engage in combat.]

the information earns a serious expression on his small face, lips pressed together thoughtfully. it's-- a lot to take in. some kind of second magic, almost certainly. but.. but.. he's too tired to think about it too much.
he finds his gaze drawn to the sword, though, before he glances down at his own hands. ] I'm a magus, so I can fight, but.. I'd rather not if I don't have to.

[A burst of fire suddenly appears before him, blooming and then just as quickly disappearing.]
That is a result of Materia.
If you do not want to fight, then avoid it as much as possible. There are times when it cannot be avoided. We are sometimes subjected to experiments or games, and many of them are violent. At times our powers are also taken from us, so you will not always be able to rely on your magecraft.
[Sephiroth doesn't mince words, but he considers delivering this information to be in Kariya's best interests, so why should he?]

[ the next part of sephiroth's explanations bring him up short, and he pauses for a moment in the hall as he stares at sephiroth's back. he shakes himself of it quickly enough, though, hurrying to catch up again. ]
It's-- It's okay, Father's done a bunch of stuff to make sure I'm strong. Even if this place does things, I can handle it.

They are not ordinary crystals. The substance they are made of is the life energy of the Planet. They are not alive, yet they are. The more you use them, the stronger they become, until they reach maturity, at which point a part of them breaks off, forming a new Materia. So the energy will not run out. The only thing that runs out is human energy. Some people's ability to use Materia will be affected if they utilize their magic too much without resting.
Each Materia has its own range of spells. My Fire Material has Fire spells of differing strengths.
[Sephiroth is all too happy to explain his world's magical science. He could talk about Materia all day, discussing the finer details, but for Kariya's sake, he attempts to summarize as best as he can.
He nods, understanding Kariya's words.]
Good. I too have been conditioned to endure battle and extreme stress.
