002 Acts of Kindness

Summary: Darres is going about some of his usual routines around the tower.

[Floor 3 (Library)]
[Darres was in here for the same reason he always came to this floor. The knight was in search for some decent, non-dark story books to read to Quark. The knight was even more protective of the child than he use to be. Having the kid die in his arms, anyone would become more caring of another. While death was not permanent here, it still pang him that he wasn't able to prevent it. The best he could do was try to keep the kid from slipping into the darkness that the tower taunted its residents with. This round, Darres was in search of particularly happy stories he could read to Quark. He could be found around the library collecting books.]

[Floor 10 (Aquarium)]
[The aquarium was more therapeutic for the knight than anything. He was continually rattled as his stay here grew longer. Back home he wasn't quite so useless as he was finding himself to be here. He wanted to save those who wanted it. Darres wants to help those who couldn't help themselves, but he was finding it to be rather difficult with how he was thwarted.

The knight was peacefully stationed in part of the aquarium where the fish roamed freely. Jumping from tank to tank and going about their business as if he wasn't here. There was a certain beauty to them that he found to be soothing. It was a nice break from the chaos that constantly plagued the tower. He himself was almost at peace?]

[Floor 19 (Second Library)]
[Darres decided it was time he really buckled down and hit the books to better his knowledge of things outside of his world. He wasn't sure how long he was going to be away from it, and as far as he was concerned, knowledge was a useful tool in various situations. The knight was diligently digging through the science portion of the library trying to better himself in the science field. From what he's gathered, the tower was full of this theme.]

[It was still unusual for him to witness Ishtar in such a mood. Usually she was so carefree, but things were so much different. Why else would they be book raiding the library? Their only hope was to adapt. After he gathered what he felt necessary he would retreat to a corner of the library where he could start reading the books.]

Are you sure you want to study here with me?

[It would be kind of boring.]

[ Ishtar continued to pull a book here and a book there because it was easier to read about stuff she didn't know about. She was carefree, but a lot of things changed that. She still had her carefree nature. It was a lot more controlled however, and less troublesome. She pulled another book and then turned towards his reading self and smiles. ]

Yeah, it's fine Darres.

[ She smiled. She carried the stack of book over to him and plops right next to him. ]

[If she insisted, he wasn't going to push her away. He would never push her away, but he did want to give her the option. Ishtar didn't need to feel obligated to be with him. Especially for something so scholarly. His heart weighed down a little at the though of Yujinn. This was more his thing after all. Darres was just a knight.]

If you're sure.

[His tone was dull. Darres' usual calm atmosphere became a little heavy as he opened one of the books he picked out.]

[ Ishtar wasn't going anywhere anytime soon so Darres better get comfortable.They had been through too much crap for her to just not do anything. She's going to be around him more than he would like, but that's the perk of being a husband to a needy princess. She flipped through a few pages of the book she had on her side of the desk. She really did miss Yujinn, and she wanted to talk to him about it, that how Yujinn was always a big help to her back in Facility. It just didn't feel right for her to bring it up right after something traumatizing, though. ]

One hundred percent, Darres. You don't have to worry about me. I can handle it.

[ She replied as she turned to him, giving him a small smile. Ishtar noticed something was off, so she pushed her book aside and turned towards him, placing a hand on his arm. ]

What's wrong, Darres and don't lie to me. You look real crappy right now?

[Darres took a breath. He should have known he wouldn't have been able to hide it from Ishtar. Usually he was good at keeping his feelings to himself and assuming responsibility where responsibility was needed. The tower was finally starting to grate him piece by piece, and he wasn't able to keep his vow. So many times Ishtar has cried, and it pained him. He never wanted her to cry again and now he couldn't even do anything to stop it. Then Quark died in arms, and he couldn't stop that either.

Here he was, trying to become more informed, and his feelings for Yujinn started to surface.]

Have I helped?

[He paused. Darres didn't want to expose his weakness. He was suppose to be the strong one. He was suppose to be the person Ishtar could come to for anything. He was her blanket, but he felt like he had holes.]

Ever since I've arrived here...I've felt like I haven't helped anyone at all. [His chest felt compressed.] how can I call myself a knight if I can't even protect people?

[He set the book down]

I shouldn't have brought this on you.

[ Ishtar waited for him to answer her while tightening her grip on his arm. She was serious when she asked him that question and she wanted to know what was wrong. She knew that he forced himself to bear another responsibility that he shouldn't have. She knew that he had watched someone die in front of him, and it was just like Yujinn, useless and unable to do anything about it. It was inevitable. She understood it though. How many times did she sat idle and cried about losing her friends?

It was hard for him, she knew and if she didn't buck up, Darres would take the suffering for the both of them and Ishtar couldn't have that. No matter what she couldn't have Darres break because of her own incapability. Ishtar missed Yujinn too. He always knew what to say and what to do to cheer the both of them up. Yujinn was someone important to her and being unable to save him from Facility, she felt guilt too. Not only his death in their world but his eminent destruction in Facility. ]

What?

[ She looked at him as he paused. What did he mean by that. ]

....That's how I've always felt since I've arrived here and since I was there. I know...it hurts and I know it's painful, but it did help. If you weren't here with me, I wouldn't know what to do, Darres. I'm scared of being alone. I don't want that to happen again. I don't want to lose you or anyone else. You just being here is more than I can ask for, even though I would rather not have you here with me and suffering.

[ Ishtar raised from her chair and wrapped her arms around Darres tightly. ]

Tell me everything, cuz you're the only one from home that's here with me right now, and...like you said, we're supposed to be married right? Let's share everything just like a married couple.

[ She smiled, blinking back tears. ]

[While Ishtar claimed it was more than she could ever want, Darres beared different feelings regarding the matter. To him, his efforts have been insufficient and he felt like he could do more if he channeled more energy than he currently has. The knight diverted his glance away from her. His shame simply couldn't let him look her in the eyes. Why were things so hard here?]

I shouldn't burden you with my problems.

[Because he didn't want her to take his over. She had already suffered so much for so long and he couldn't bear for her to take on his challenges too. Especially when him being here already triggered that train of thought.]

I'll be okay, Your--Ishtar.

[ Ishtar didn't want him to carry the weight on his own and being one with experience, she would rather be the one to carry the burden for the both of them. It was the least she could do. Darres was vulnerable, a lot more vulnerable than she was. He was a good person, much too good and people would take advantage of that. People that did terrible things, people that could use him! She couldn't have that.

She tightened her grip on him. ]

Darres don't look away from me. [ She paused. ] You said we'll get out of here in one piece, we haveta.

[ She shook her head. ]

I'm not the little girl you thought I was Darres. Things are different now. I'm not scared of sharing the burden with you as long as it's with you.

[ She buried her face in his shoulders. It wasn't going to change anything. She was still suffering period. ]

That's what we are isn't it, or are you going to pull the it's complicated card on me again. I know what you said, and I know what time you came from. It doesn't change anything.

[He glimpsed to her subtly. Submissively, even. He didn't have the empowering emotion to try and challenge her.]

I'll make sure we get out together...in one piece. [At the VERY LEAST, that's all he wanted to do in this wretched tower.]

I'm aware you're not young like you use to be. [A part of him wanted to reach out to her, but he couldn't bring himself to do it.]

We'll figure something out.

[He wasn't going to share his problems whole-heartily, but his worlds were selective and he chose them wisely.]

[ Ishtar only offered him a kind smile for his glimpse. She wasn't lying, so he should take it and deal with it. She wasn't going to let him get away with saying anything else. At least, not right now. ]

We'll get our souls to safety, Darres and I trust that you will. [ She replied nodding her head. ]

Four years can change a person. Especially when I've been away from home for a long time. [ She nodded her head. She knew it was hard for him to reach out to her. Hell, she wasn't sure if he really loved her at times, but she knew one thing. He was always there when she needed him to be. That was enough. It didn't matter if things turned out to not be true. She was fine with it. ]

So, you're not going to talk to me about it are you,Darres?

[ she frowned looking at him. ]

[Their situation was always complicated. Of course how could it not be when it involved politics. Never had it been this complicated, and he thought of things that could happen. Like if others from their world turned up here. Or hell, even multiples of them. There were many factors that didn't escape his consideration.]

I don't think...I fully understand how to handle this. [Which wasn't a lie, It proved to conflict him, really. Regardless of how crude some of the admins were, he didn't hate them. He didn't agree with their supposed intentions or motives.

[ That was tue. There was nothing about their lives that was simple. She couldn't think about that right now. The idea of thinking about it made her sad. It really did. She didn't want to see her friends here and she didn't want to see multiple of them either. ]

What do you mean? You mean all of this as in the tower, or our lives?

[ She replied giving him a questionable look for that but worried nonetheless. ]

[This was a dark subject and really Ishtar wasn't the one he should be telling this. Still he was opening up as best he could without feeling like Ishtar would try to carry all the weight. It was a very delicate balance and there was no easy way to go about it.]

The tower, our souls....science? The administrators. Even the other residents.

[ Ishtar was fine with it. She wanted him to tell her everything. She didn't want him to hide anything from her. That was the honest truth. ]

...Ah...yeah. I see what you mean.

[ She looked down. ]

There's too many uncontrollable elements to consider.

Yeah that is and we can't do much about it.

Besides keep going, that is.

That is a given, don't you think, Darres?

[ She gave him a small smile. Ishtar moved back over to her spot on the chair next to him. Talking about all of this is making her mentally tired. She's not going to last much longer in this situation. Especially, if she had to have serious conversations with Darres all the time. She just wanted to relax sometimes, but it was hard. She knew that. ]

...Yes...

[That's unfortunate for her since Darres doesn't seem to know the meaning of taking a break and relaxing. He's been on edge ever since he game here.]

Hehehe.

[ She chuckles softly at his response, somewhat expecting that kind of answer. Ishtar knew that he wasn't in the best state since he came here. Ishtar was the same, but she was more used to it than he was. After staring at the table and the book for a few minutes, she stretched her arms and plopped her head comfortably in his lap, without warning really. ]

[Ack, he wasn't expecting her to do this in such a serious--okay no, part of him expected that she act out like this. He couldn't really do anything about. He wouldn't do anything about it. Like he always had, he would let her get away with whatever physical affection she decided to convey.]

This isn't studying, Ishtar.

[Not that he wouldn't verbalize a hint of annoyance.]

[ Ishtar was comfortable, so her princess ass isn't moving. She sheepishly grinned at his expression. Now that's something she'd enjoy doing. She knew he would let her get away with most things too, so she did it on purpose knowing that. Darres was easy to take advantage of, honestly. ]

It's called taking a break.

[ Ishtar didn't seem to care or mind. ]

We've barely started.

[All they did was find the books. Darres has barely had the chance to start reading any of them and now she wants to take a break?]

You don't need a break.

I'll get started on them, but I'm comfortable here.

[ With that said she grabbed one of the books and opened them. She was actually read it while still plopped in his lap, unmoving. ]

Well okay, I'll get to work then.

[Damn it, Ishtar. Why do you have to read on his lap of all places. This is not okay. Not that he'll move her.

The knight let out a sigh and slowly opened his book. He was kind of distracted some by her, but this really needed to get done.]
