002 Acts of Kindness

Summary: Darres is going about some of his usual routines around the tower.

[Floor 3 (Library)]
[Darres was in here for the same reason he always came to this floor. The knight was in search for some decent, non-dark story books to read to Quark. The knight was even more protective of the child than he use to be. Having the kid die in his arms, anyone would become more caring of another. While death was not permanent here, it still pang him that he wasn't able to prevent it. The best he could do was try to keep the kid from slipping into the darkness that the tower taunted its residents with. This round, Darres was in search of particularly happy stories he could read to Quark. He could be found around the library collecting books.]


[Floor 10 (Aquarium)]
[The aquarium was more therapeutic for the knight than anything. He was continually rattled as his stay here grew longer. Back home he wasn't quite so useless as he was finding himself to be here. He wanted to save those who wanted it. Darres wants to help those who couldn't help themselves, but he was finding it to be rather difficult with how he was thwarted.

The knight was peacefully stationed in part of the aquarium where the fish roamed freely. Jumping from tank to tank and going about their business as if he wasn't here. There was a certain beauty to them that he found to be soothing. It was a nice break from the chaos that constantly plagued the tower. He himself was almost at peace?]


[Floor 19 (Second Library)]
[Darres decided it was time he really buckled down and hit the books to better his knowledge of things outside of his world. He wasn't sure how long he was going to be away from it, and as far as he was concerned, knowledge was a useful tool in various situations. The knight was diligently digging through the science portion of the library trying to better himself in the science field. From what he's gathered, the tower was full of this theme.]

[How fitting it is, then, that when Darres rounds his way around another corner for what is surely the umpteenth time in his book collecting, he'll discover Quark himself. They boy's holding a book and reading the description on the back. There's a puzzled look on his face, like he's not really sure how to absorb the information.]

But why would there be an entire world in a wardrobe? [He murmurs to himself, sounding frustrated.] Is it a really big wardrobe or just a really tiny world? And why did nobody notice it before?

[He wonders if the world smelled funny, like old fuzzies and dust and junk.]

[Darres was a little shocked to see Quark so suddenly on this floor. He was even trying his hand at one of the books but sounds he got lost somewhere in the message. He smiled softly and knelt beside Quark so he could read over hi shoulder.] What are you confused about, Quark?

[Ready and receptive to engage with Quark in a matter that wasn't sad or dejected. He wanted Quark to feel happier even in a place like this.]

[Quark turns his distressed pout up at Darres, who still seems to tower over him even when he's kneeling, when the man makes his presence known.]

This book sounds really illogical and I don't get it.

[He holds it up higher, so Darres can read it, too.]

It talks about magical creatures and stuff which I guess I can believe, since there are a bunch of people in the Tower that aren't human and who have powers...but I'm not sure that I can believe that a closet can act as a gateway to a completely different dimension.

[Quark blinks. Hey...maybe if he thought of it in terms of devices and portals, it could be sciencey. He pauses. Nah. It was still way too silly. No scientist worth their salt would hang up their coats in the same place that they had built something so important.]

[The knight glanced at the description the young boy presented him with. He quickly skimmed through the text to figure out what it was Quark was talking about. Darres pondered a good way to explain.]

You remember the story with the wizards and magic. It's something like that. The wardrobe is magical.

[Magic explains all logic flaws. It just does okay.]

Oh, okay.

[For a moment, this seems to completely appease the boy. But then he stops, and looks up at where Darres is holding the book.]

You know what, Mr. Darres? That sounds kinda like cheating!

[It wasn't fair to be able to do anything and everything just because magic says it was possible! Where was the reasoning in that?]

Or at least kinda lazy!

[Darres did dive into a little bit of the science books that were available, it was...an interesting concept he was still trying to understand but.]

Do you think so? My world has magic in it.

[Ishtar could use magic. Yujinn, Vord, and his brothers could too.]

[Quark look startled, then amazed, then embarrassed in quick succession.]

R-Really?

[The guilt is clear on his face, and he curls his hands into fists to wave them earnestly in front of him.]

I didn't mean it like magic itself was lazy, honest! I just meant writing about it! 'Cause then you can just say everything happened with magic and you don't have to explain anything!

Some authors prefer using magic in their work, Quark. Just like some prefer science.

Would you rather have a science fiction book instead?

Science…fiction?

[That sounded oxymoronic. Was calling something oxymoronic impolite? ‘Cause it was just a descriptor, but it also had the word “moron” in it. Thinking about it too hard confused Quark, so instead he just smiled.]

Yeah! One of those!

Do you remember where the science fiction section is? [If so, Darres would put this book back for Quark.]

Uh-huh! [Not that Quark really gives Darres time to put anything away before he's grabbed the knight's hand in both of his. With enthusiasm, he pulls on Darres' arm.] Let's go together!

[queensgeneral]

O-Okay! [He wasn't quite expecting Quark to be so bold. He would have to put the book back later. For now, The knight trailed after Quark.]
