The Perils of Kariya Matou
Characters: Kariya & OPEN
Setting: Various floors, throughout the end of the month and maybe into the next.
Format: Action, but will match prose
Summary: Kariya wanders away from Lancelot at various times and has misadventures.
Warnings: Death is quite possible! Also body horror, blood, insects.
Notes: Kariya finds himself in a series of dangerous situations. Will he die? Will he be saved? (Or will someone hasten his death?) Feel free to rescue him from (almost) certain death or disaster! Or give him further problems to deal with. I also don't mind different people replying to the same prompts; Kariya can just have extra misfortune.
Floor 15:
[Some might argue that Kariya shouldn't wander away from Lancelot. He's sick and weak and his thinking is impaired, and he only has one arm. Yet Kariya is nothing if not stubborn, and sometimes he likes to be by himself, to do things for himself. Yet this doesn't always work out as well as he might hope…
The workshop floor seems relatively safe. He wasn't expecting to find monsters here during the daytime. The miniblin aren't much of a threat to someone stronger in combat, but this is Kariya. The creatures swarm toward him, and he knows that if he doesn't do something, he'll be injured and will likely die. He's weak and sick and lacking an arm, but he doesn't want to die. He doesn't have a weapon. He has no choice. He sends out his crest worms. The creatures burst out through his skin and then from his mouth as he vomits them up. The worms quickly grow and twist, turning into large, wasplike creatures that divebomb the attacking miniblin. As they fight, Kariya slumps to the ground, bleeding, breathing hard. If the monsters don't kill him, the blood loss might.]
Floor 87:
[As Kariya wanders into the field of poppies, something seems wrong, but he can't quite say what. He frequently visits the meadow on floor twenty-five to relax. Isn't that where he is? He looks around and blinks. It's different, but that doesn't mean too much when everything is an illusion. Maybe they changed the flowers here for some reason.
With a sigh, Kariya sinks to his knees, then sits, then lies down. He feels so tired, but that's nothing new. He should sleep. For a little while.]
Floor 36:
[Trapped on the crumbling staircase, without the use of any magecraft to help himself, Kariya stumbles and flails, trying to keep his balance. For a moment, he succeeds, only to find himself on a single stair between two gaps, each much too large for him to leap over. He stares. What is he supposed to do now? At any moment, this remaining stair might crumble beneath him too, but if he tries to jump, he'll likely plummet to his death.]
Floor 60:
[He'd been thinking of Sakura, remembering how she'd loved to cook, even as a little girl, so the kitchen seemed like a natural place to look for her. He's sure Sakura's here somewhere. She can't be gone, can she?]
Sakura?
[He walks into the freezer without thinking of it, and the door swings shut behind him. Blinking, he turns to open it again and leave, as Sakura isn't there, but it doesn't move. It's--locked? He pulls at it again and shivers inside his hoodie. It's so cold in here. He knocks on the door.]
Sakura...? Hello?
Floor 85:
[How did this even happen? He didn't mean to enter this floor, but now he's midway down a slide and hanging on to the edge, pushing with his feet against the sides, trying to prevent himself from sliding down any further. He hates slides. He remembers being forcibly pushed down them as a child. Unashamedly, Kariya starts to cry.]
Floor 96:
[The white is very calming, and there don't seem to be any monsters present. It's a very nice floor. Peaceful. Kariya wonders why he doesn't spend more time here. He sinks into the chair and shortly closes his eyes, letting out a long breath. Maybe this is a better floor to rest on.]

Huh. You seem to have gotten stupider, crazily enough. [ Avenger observed as he looked down at him, his hands resting on his hips. Matou really came across as one of those humans who just acted like he couldn't bear to make sensible decisions for too long. Or listen to his poor sense of self-preservation for over a second.
He could be allergic to sensible decisions or something. ]
Or maybe those worms have started chewing through your brain. Does this seriously look like a good place for a nap?
no subject
[Kariya scowls. He hates being talked to this way. He hates anything that reminds him of something Zouken might do.]
They--
[They have, actually. There's a valid reason his judgment is so impaired, but he hates to think of it, and he turns away, swallowing hard. Now he's annoyed with Avenger, so much so that he sits up, looking around. The flowers are strange, but there's no sign of monsters or anything dangerous. Right?]
It's a meadow. It's fine.
no subject
[ Gross things Avenger is an asshole enough to do: mean-spirtedly mock people with magic-induced brain damage.
He shrugged dismissively, folding his arms across his chest when Matou irritably sits up and peers around, searching for an obvious danger and finding none, none in the red flowers around them, none in the fake sky, none in the grass. ]
Really? Hey, if you say so.
no subject
[So cruel, Avenger...
He should probably be more surprised, but he is somewhat surprised. Sometimes events are hazy in his memory, but he doesn't usually forget people wholesale.
He glances at Avenger, eyes narrowing. Now he's suspicious.]
What's wrong with it?
no subject
[ A small, careless yawn.
Avenger shakes his head slightly, not because he's answering in the negative but because he's not unaffected by the effects of the poppies himself. It makes him want to sleep. The Servant knew full well the dangers of that, and this floor. He ignores the temptation and pushes it away.
He smirks. ]
You mean, besides the fact it's just another illusion like everything else?
no subject
[He gazes up at Avenger curiously.]
You're a Servant.
[A Servant he's not familiar with. Although he's sure it's very possible for there to be some he doesn't know, he's still curious, because he thinks he would have remembered meeting a Servant, especially such a distinctive one.]
I know everything here is an illusion. Yes, I meant besides that.
no subject
[ Avenger asked unhelpfully and then whistles through his teeth, craning his neck so he can glance around better at their surroundings.
Their strangely unthreatening surroundings. ] Weeell, maybe it's the weird-smelling flowers like a place like this Tower, or maybe it's just me. Who knows?
no subject
[It really wasn't a helpful answer on Avenger's part, but even Kariya was getting the idea this wasn't the most helpful person. He felt a little nervous.]
They are strange, aren't they? This isn't the same meadow.
[It's not the meadow he's used to, is it? He'd been a bit confused, but his head was starting to clear slightly. Not that he wasn't still somewhat confused.]
no subject
[ He drags his heel through the short grass, pressing it against the dirt. ]
No, I'm under the impression all meadows are different.
[ That is such an obnoxious smile on his face. ]
no subject
It's not necessary, no. But I'd like to know. [He doesn't say "but it's polite", because he doesn't think this Servant would care about that.]
I know that, but I thought it was the other one. For a little while.
[He isn't defensive, just explaining.]
no subject
Great. [ The boy shrugs his bare shoulders. The red poppies sway again in the breeze. ]
That was really careless of you. How often does your head go floating 'bout in the clouds?
[ Avenger points out, not kindly. ]
no subject
[Because he really doesn't remember.]
It depends. Sometimes I don't remember where I am. Sometimes I'm better.
[It's an honest answer, if not one he's particularly happy about. His brain just doesn't work right anymore.]
no subject
[ He doesn't caaaare. (He's a jerk.) ]
Degradation kinda sucks, doesn't it? At least it lets you dream. [ Those nasty worms ought to be set on fire though. That bald buggy vampire was such a waste of space. He lets out a sigh. ] All that effort for naught. Real pity.
no subject
[You're confusing, Avenger.]
I don't like it, but I had to do it. It's not for nothing. It's important.
I don't dream. Not like I used to.
[He can achieve a hazy half-sleep, and sometimes nightmares. It's not the same.]
no subject
[ Thanks for the compliment, Kariya. ]
Lemme me reword that. It doesn't stop you from deluding yourself then. [ There! He was talking about your delusions, not your actual dreams, Kariya. ]
. . . Important? Well, you died for nothing and saved nobody. So, s'important to you, but not anybody else.
[ That's (unsurprising) spoilers, Avenger. Shut up. ]
no subject
[At least all this confusion is keeping him awake. He doesn't want to nap here anymore.]
I'm not deluding myself!
[Why are people always saying that to him...?]
No, you're wrong. People say that, but we all come from different worlds. I've met other versions of myself here. I'm not from your world. I'm not going to fail.
[It's good that he found some encouragement for his delusions!]
It is important.
no subject
[ c: ]
I hate to break this to ya', buuut. . .
[ Maybe because there's a kernel of truth to the repeated observation you are kinda a pathetic dude prone to delusions?
Humans. So keen to believe in pointless things. ]
A dying, half-baked Master going for the Grail by himself? With your 'taste' in allies? You were pretty much screwed, right from the get-go. Failure or victory, the damage's done.
[ Avenger has no sympathy. ]
It changed nothing.
no subject
You're not from my future. You're from a different world. So you don't know.
I'm not by myself. I'm with Lancelot. Things are different now. When we go back, everything will be different. It doesn't matter what happens me, as long as Sakura's all right. That's what I care about.
no subject
[ He crackles, clearly finding Kariya's stuart belief in his own success at changing things or even having somewhere to go back to at all, awfully funny. ]
I do, but hey, whatever lets you sleep at night. Can't say I care. You seriously think Berserker gonna net you the Grail? He'll throw himself after Saber, first chance he gets.
[ . . . ] Oh, yeah. Sakura? You care 'bout her?
no subject
[So there! Kariya's not giving up, no matter what.]
Lancelot's not Berserker any more.
[Kariya pauses as Avenger speaks about Sakura, frowning.]
Yes. I'm her uncle.
no subject
[ Avenger taps his chin, then made a noise under his breath. ]
Aha. . .
You died and left her to ten years of misery. I applaud your tremendous failure as an uncle, though it's more than any other adult ever offered her.
[ Definitively being sarcastic about the applause here. ]
