Summary: As Ruana's chosen dogs set out to hunt and/or run, the rest of the tower watches.
Warnings: very possibly mentions of violence and character death? Will update as needed!

[Sometimes in the morning, strange events start to be broadcasted to the screens of the media room and the terminal, showing familiar faces, though some maybe in not quite so familiar get-ups. Looks like Ruana's game is just about to start!]

[It isn't funny. It really, really isn't, but Reno can't help but chuckle at the surprised look on David's face.]

Yeah, it can. My son's been through the process almost twenty times now, he's been forgetting things.

Man, as if dyin' an' comin' back weren't bad enough ...

[The surprise doesn't leave David's face.]

An'—you got a son here—? Enoch told me dere's only one person who gets rescued per world—dat ain't true?

[Something flickers in Reno's expression briefly, too fast to catch.]

Yeah, it's true. I got a son here, and a daughter, and a wife.

So you adopted an' married here den.

[... that's what he's hoping. For one, how would new life be brought into the tower, given what it does to preserve souls? And for the other ... the thought of a newborn baby being slaughtered mercilessly dozens of times thanks to the sick games the admins play—it's just too much for David to dwell on.]

[He's silent for a moment as he sifts through the reports and scans Dax's research notes.]

... Dis ain't implyin' what I think it means, is it?

Yeah.

[Reno nods at his assessment. There's actually no way physical way for kids to be born. He figures that if Elena were to get pregnant it would have happened already. At least they knew why now.

Though he hesitates at the question, glancing over the paper quickly to refresh his memory, and frowns.]

I try not to think too much on it. I didn't trust Dax after he full out lied to me.

[David frowns, glancing back at the research before looking back to Reno.]

What'd he lie about?

He said we're alive here. Far as I'm concerned, I'm a literal fucking ghost in bubble wrap.

Heh.

[David's laugh is humorless. Reno's description of their film bodies is pretty close to how he'd describe the present situation that everyone's in.]

Well, I ain't gonna make excuses for 'em—but dis bit, about Ruana bein' able to siphon power from souls—you think she's been doin' dat with everyone dey ain't "rescued?"

Y'mean the ones from our own universes that didn't make it? I think they got split. The people that were here and went back... Who knows. Not like she shares anything with us. I'm pretty damn sure she's the one that's been destroying them.

[And that makes David glower.]

Great, so we could be stuck in dis tower with our very own Rularuu.

[He repositions the cigar in his mouth thoughtfully, though he still doesn't look very happy.]

What leads ya got pointin' to dat?

Something Enoch said and a couple other things that happened.

[A pause.]

Rularuu?

Rularuu da Ravager's dis dimension-eatin' punk we tangled with decades ago. Or rather, da Midnight Squad did. Defeated him an' put him in dis dimensional prison we call da Shadow Shard.

[David's expression takes on a darker look.]

Rularuu tried to break out a few years ago, an' more recently a mage had dis crazy scheme to try an' assimilate Rularuu into himself. An' he killed two of da world's strongest heroes tryin' to do it.

Figures.

[Honestly, Reno isn't surprised by the story, and he just shakes his head.]

I'm really startin' to not get why people do things like that. I mean I get the thrill of power but there's gotta be a line drawn somewhere.

I think in cases like Wade, dey don't have a line drawn anywhere. So I heard from da rumors, at least.

[David shakes his head, remembering just what it was Primal Earth lost thanks to Darrin Wade's crazy scheme.]

Far as I know, he was obsessed with tryin' to defy his nature as a "mere human." Killin' Statesman an' Sister Psyche an' takin' dier powers was bad enough—but to think he actually had a chance of takin' over dat dimension-eatin' abomination— ...

[David cuts himself off, spending a moment to fume silently.]

I gotta tell ya, Reno—first day I was here an' I got told all dis stuff about dat thing killin' off all our worlds? I thought it was 'cause Rularuu got loose.

[Understanding crosses Reno's face.]

Yeah, I get it now.

[But that's more to the 'defying a human nature.' Humans have a great capacity for screwball...]

I don't blame ya. I'd be confused too if Jenova was universe eating instead of planet eating.

Heh.

[Another humorless laugh from David. Though the name gets him curious.]

Dat Jenova thing related to da apocalypse stuff you told me about before?

Huh?

[Reno's train of thought got crossed, and he's blinking while trying to catch up.]

Oh, yeah. Sort of. We had a planetary crisis several times within a couple years. Jenova and Zirconiade weren't really related, but they had the same MO.

Heh. Sounds like you guys're about as busy back home as us heroes are in Primal Earth.

[David gives Reno a sympathetic grin, though a little tired-looking one. After all, Reno's probably had his days where he wished the world would "stay saved."]

[He's been there.]

Yeah. Got any more questions?

[David turns back to the reports, glancing through them to see if there's any immediate questions about them he might have. Though, he has questions unrelated to them to ask Reno.]

'Kay, about dis Ragnarok an' Pandora thing—is helpin' you guys out an' "either/or" kinda deal?

I don't want it to be. We're workin' together on some things, like the alternative kitchen down on Sixty. Stuff that benefits the whole place. I put this stuff up here so everybody could access it.

[Reno pauses, then adds;]

Pandora kinda got started by Dax. Ragnarok is... more along bein' neutral. We've been lied to so many times it's kinda hard to trust anything, though we got to in some cases.

Huh, Dax started Pandora?

[That honestly surprises David. An admin founding a resistance against the admins. He didn't register the "kinda" there, but that can be chalked up to his surprise over hearing an admin's involvement in any fashion.]

So I guess Ragnarok's kinda like da backup safety, den. In case Dax's stuff turns out to be all a trick?

From what I heard.

[He points at the report with Dax's research.]

That had something to do with it. You'd have to ask Enoch. I don't know 'bout it being a trick, he's the one that got the holographic stuff to glitch, but I don't know what his agenda was and considering how fucking weird the administrators are it could be anything.

[He chuckles.]

I'm one of the most pessimistic people 'bout Dax in the whole Tower, so I'm probably biased.

Eh. Pays to be prepared, I guess.

[Though, thinking back to when he worked with Crimson and Indigo, a lot of the missions they sent David on involved taking advantage of Malta Group's tendency to be paranoid. Mind games, in which he was an instrument.]

Next time I see Enoch I'll ask 'em about it. Well, when we're somewhere safe.

[He hopes Reno's not letting himself get too worked up on Dax ...]

I never heard about dat kitchen, by da way. Man, if I'd knew? I wouldn't be skippin' dinner all dis month.

[He doesn't care if it's just edible film or whatever disguising oatmeal and nutrition bars—he will not eat human hearts and drink blood.]

You can grab dinner down there. Mostly stuff the hunters bring in, so tough luck if you're a veggie lover.
