[ ...okay, that kind of knocked him out of his stupor. So much so that he looses step and very nearly smacks his head against the treadmill. Thankfully, he catches himself with the handrails. ]

...Just when you thought you've seen everything.

[He snorts in amusement.]

Our current housing breaks something like eight rules of geometry and three laws of physics and this surprises you?

[If horses could grin, he totally would be right now.]

Magic, etcetera.

[ Hey, he breaks the laws of physics and things himself so the housing accommodations don't really faze him but the shapechanging... thing? Now that's new. ]

S'not exactly the thing I'd expected right off, you know.

[ But hey, the chatter's picking him back up. ]

Can't say I've met anyone who could do that... [ Pauses though. ] ...Not a demon, are you? Course, the demons I've been told of can only turn into one form.

Heh. Demon? Depends how you define it. I'm a tanuki. Technically I just classify as a 'supernatural monster', though 'monster' is kind of rude I think.

[He tosses his head and looks over at the other guy.]

Keeping it hidden here is kind of useless it seems.

Tanuki? Definitely never heard of it before.

[ He continues his little jog and an easy clip, almost thoughtfully as he begins to mull over it. ]

'Suppose you've got a point. If being anything but human gives us an advantage with whatever they're aiming to throw at us, eh? Not that it's helped much...

Most of us prefer it that way at home.

Yeah. The geometry threw me off last week pretty badly.

[His tone turns serious as he gets down to business.]

... We can't let that other pod with the surgeries win... it'll just encourage that guy to do that sort of stuff to everyone. Right now all we can do is try to push a more favorable winner.

[ At the mention of the other pod, his features seem to darken. His eyes remain hidden behind his glasses as he lowers his head and continues to focus on his jog. But he speaks up after a moment more, voice hushed. ]

Jason. The bloke's name is Jason.

[ His pace slows but he continues to jog. ]

Can't let him win is bloody right. He... He did something to Mister Spears. I'm not gonna let him get away with it. I'm gonna kill him myself even if his soul isn't gonna be collected yet. He's not... he can't...

[ And his grip on the hand rails tightens. ]

Dammit! Who knows what else he's gone and done to them?!

[Suddenly there's a big fluffy golden retriever on the treadmill, who bounds over to Ronald's treadmill and nuzzles him.]

Hey. We'll push the better outcome. Don't worry. We'll do all we can for them, all right?

[ This causes him to stop running. To just sink down from the treadmill and let it slide him to the ground. So he sits there at the foot of his treadmill, hands running through his own hair in frustration a moment. Truth be told, he wanted to let it all loose, just give up and get himself ejected from the pod as soon as he can so he can head back to the tower and tell Grell about what happened. He wanted to just give up. There and then. However, there's a nagging voice poking at him from the deep recesses of his mind. With a sigh, he reaches out and ruffles Taro between the ears a moment. Survive, William had told him. Death always had the last word. So he had to survive.

And so survive he will. ]

Yeah. We gotta do what we can. They've got it tougher than we do. Can't let Jason get away with this. And we sure as hell won't.

[ Though he manages the smallest smile. ]

I'm Ronald, by the way. What's your name?

[He puts a paw on his knee, and closes his eyes contentedly at the petting.]

Yeah. We'll beat this thing. And I'm Taro. Nice to meet you.

[He holds out a paw for shaking.]

[ Oh man dogs are the best. Even better when they're great guys who can transform and stuff. He's managed to get a smile back on his face though as he grips that paw and returns the handshake. ]

Pleasure's all mine.

[ Have another ear ruffle before he gets up and back on the treadmill. Survive. Right. To do that, he had to run. ]

So... how long have you been around the tower?

[He'll just shift back into human form for a while. It's easier to keep up. He heads over to the treadmill again.]

Mm. A month, maybe? Not that long. Not long enough to learn a lot of things about this place. What about you?

[ You'll have to pardon him watching those transformations with a raised eyebrow. After all, the only creatures in their world who could do complete transformations were demons... ]

Can't really tell. Prolly a couple of months. Haven't really been keeping track. Just know I've been here a while.

[ Kind of glad his boss isn't here to hear that. ]

[It's fine with him. There's not much to it - just a blink and he's different.]

Yeah? Huh. I'm trying to get as much information as I can... that's kind of one of my things.
