Don't say that! People aren't crates. They were treated like empty vessels, so that's what they were like, but they can talk and think, even if they're different from us. I almost had my soul taken from me, but I was still me.

I did save them. All the Genomes in Bran Bal. They're fine now. They're gonna start new lives.

[Oh now Zidane had to be joking around. Couldn't he take anything seriously? ignoring the soulstealing because urgh]

Some life that would be, standing and walking with nothing. I'm sure it was a well-intentioned gesture, but I've spent years with them and not once did one ever have anything like a real thought, a real answer.

They're already doing okay and asking questions and learning stuff, so maybe you don't know them as well as you thought.

...How. How, after years and years of trying to elicit anything with only failure, do they finally respond to you?

It wasn't just me. It was everybody. Especially the Mages. And probably being taken away from a place where they weren't being treated like people. Maybe Garland was doing something to keep them that way, I dunno!

[Kuja is silent for a moment, thinking. If it wasn't just Zidane, but rather being off Terra... The mention of his mages sparks a realization: on Gaia, Kuja always struggled with emptying the Black Mages of souls, and they awakened anyway.]

I think Gaia caused the change.
