Summary: Welcome to the Tower.

A few minutes before anything happens, Ruana's voice rings out over the Tower's intercom--it manages to be louder than anything the residents happen to be doing. "Hey, everyone, there's something exciting going on at floor fifty-six! Go make sure they don't get themselves killed!"

You arrive, stepping or tumbling, in a surgical suite. It looks abandoned, with dust collecting on the table and floors. The lights flicker, and for a moment blood dripping off the table, puddling on the floor--but no, the lights are back, and surely that was your imagination. It's quiet, eerily so, but nothing hinders you, and you're free to spread out and explore. There are multiple rooms here, like in any hospital, and it's all a bit confusing. Occasionally the lights flicker, and it's a bit frightening as Things appear that shouldn't exist. Shadowy creatures stitched together and reaching for you, doctors brandishing phantom surgical tools, blood splattering the walls or floor or ceiling, how did it get there--but none are real, and all of them vanish when the lights return. Eventually you find the staircase, spiraling up and down into darkness. Approach it, though, and the thing glitters with a barrier that will push back any attempts at climbing the thing.

A girl, a teenager dressed in red and black, appears. And she does simply appear, inserting herself into the space, nearly pushing it aside to make room in it for where she is now. Her face beams with unconcealed excitement, and her words tumble out on top of themselves. "You can't go there! Yet, I mean. You'd all die!"

The girl steps onto the staircase, passing through the barrier as if it weren't there, and sits on the steps to address everyone. "Hi! I'm Ruana. You didn't show up the normal way, so the Tower can't support you yet. We got this one floor ready when I saw you were coming but, well, the Tower's kind've big, so getting all of them set up is taking a little longer than I thought." She smiles, sheepishly apologetic in a carefree sort of way. "I've got everyone coming here to visit you--or at least they know they can visit you--and I'll have someone bring food up for you. It'll be oatmeal, and oatmeal is super boring, but you have to eat it, okay? Then you can have whatever you want! The cafeteria's down on the first floor if you get hungry. We should have everything ready in a few hours. I've gotta go help with that, so you guys wait here.

"Don't worry, the monsters can't get to this floor as long as that barrier is up."

And then she's gone, blinking out of existence. The barrier will remain for three hours.

You're not dreaming. It's real.

[The nearby voice is sympathetic, serious, and... kind of robot-y sounding, to be honest. Dakki had heard a panicky voice, and recognized the girl that it belonged to when she came to investigate.]

Easy. Take a deep breath and hold it. You've got company here.

[ Yukko found a familiar face, not anyone she knew all that well but close enough. She stared for a while with a pale face. She nodded ]

Right. Got it.

[ She closed her eyes and pulled in her cheeks. She breathed deeply and held it. She let it all out with a loud gasp. Then Yukko forced a smile, looking much calmer. ]

Um, thanks. [ She blinked, looking down the hallway. ] This place is really creepy. I'm glad I'm not alone.

[That was... a more dramatic bit of breath-holding than she had expected to see, but hey. It seemed to work. No need to critique it. Dakki still looked quite concerned, though.]

I wouldn't want to be alone here, either. The shadows don't seem to be harmful, though. I think we're safe enough, for now.

[Then she pauses, and blinks.] ...do you have anything with you that you can defend yourself with?

[ Yukko is dramatic like that. Sometimes she doesn't even realize it.

Yukko blinks at the question, a bit stunned. A weapon? She looks over her shoulder and pulls off her bookbag. ]

No. Best I have is my bag. [ She unzips it and reaches in. She pulls out a pair of Groucho Glasses. ] I have a disguise though! [ She chuckles nervously, wow Yukko not the time... ] I bet you're way more prepared than me.

[Dakki frowns, not much liking that answer. If the situation were less serious, maybe she'd have laughed at the funny glasses. They're pretty funny. But there is no laughter here, no sir.]

I woke up with all of my things on me, but I generally have all of my things on me. My job calls for it. [She sighed. No use being critical. Let's be helpful instead.] I'll stick with you for now, if you'd like. If anything tries to start something? I'll end it.

[ Dakki, you couldn't imagine how secretly pleased she would have been had you laughed.

Yukko nods her head. She stops joking, and shoves her glasses back into the bag. Her mind suddenly wanders to Nano. She hadn't seen her when she arrived! Maybe... Yukko came in here alone? ]

Thanks... but I haven't seen any monsters yet. [ She huffs. ] I bet they're just trying to scare us! Make it so that we don't wander off too far!

[ Her mind returns to what the girl had said. The monsters can't get to this floor, what with the barrier. What would happen once the barrier fell...? ]

That could be it. But it could also be to lull us into a false sense of security. Once we believe that nothing will hurt us, then something might take that as a chance to strike.

[Dakki casts a glance to a corner of the room, giving an uneasy eye at what seemed, for a moment, to be a doctor in bloody scrubs.]

[ This one was different from the others. All the others had been brief glimpses, jumping out and reaching for them. This one - this doctor holding a bloody saw - is standing quite still in a corner, looking straight out as if... Staring. At them.

Yukko swallows and turns her head to look at Dakki. She has been thoroughly spooked. ]

... I-Is he... Looking at us?

...he's looking at us.

[But Dakki is not one to just stand around when there's something that needs to be taken care of! In the next instant she's rushing the corner, slicing at it with her photon saber!

...and then it's not there anymore. Though there is a slash left on the wall.]

...It wasn't real, either?
