A few minutes before anything happens, Ruana's voice rings out over the Tower's intercom--it manages to be louder than anything the residents happen to be doing. "Hey, everyone, there's something exciting going on at floor fifty-six! Go make sure they don't get themselves killed!"


You arrive, stepping or tumbling, in a surgical suite. It looks abandoned, with dust collecting on the table and floors. The lights flicker, and for a moment blood dripping off the table, puddling on the floor--but no, the lights are back, and surely that was your imagination. It's quiet, eerily so, but nothing hinders you, and you're free to spread out and explore. There are multiple rooms here, like in any hospital, and it's all a bit confusing. Occasionally the lights flicker, and it's a bit frightening as Things appear that shouldn't exist. Shadowy creatures stitched together and reaching for you, doctors brandishing phantom surgical tools, blood splattering the walls or floor or ceiling, how did it get there--but none are real, and all of them vanish when the lights return. Eventually you find the staircase, spiraling up and down into darkness. Approach it, though, and the thing glitters with a barrier that will push back any attempts at climbing the thing.

A girl, a teenager dressed in red and black, appears. And she does simply appear, inserting herself into the space, nearly pushing it aside to make room in it for where she is now. Her face beams with unconcealed excitement, and her words tumble out on top of themselves. "You can't go there! Yet, I mean. You'd all die!"

The girl steps onto the staircase, passing through the barrier as if it weren't there, and sits on the steps to address everyone. "Hi! I'm Ruana. You didn't show up the normal way, so the Tower can't support you yet. We got this one floor ready when I saw you were coming but, well, the Tower's kind've big, so getting all of them set up is taking a little longer than I thought." She smiles, sheepishly apologetic in a carefree sort of way. "I've got everyone coming here to visit you--or at least they know they can visit you--and I'll have someone bring food up for you. It'll be oatmeal, and oatmeal is super boring, but you have to eat it, okay? Then you can have whatever you want! The cafeteria's down on the first floor if you get hungry. We should have everything ready in a few hours. I've gotta go help with that, so you guys wait here.

"Don't worry, the monsters can't get to this floor as long as that barrier is up."

And then she's gone, blinking out of existence. The barrier will remain for three hours.

[Well, that was a relief. He certainly didn't notice a barrier, he just slipped right through because his feet move faster than his brain does sometimes.]

That's good. I was really worried. [And that was true. He wondered if his cellphone would still let him know if there was going to be a death...] Mhm. I live here now. What do you want to investigate?

[Yamato seemed to try and collect his thoughts. The problem was was that they had been unceremoniously dumped here without any word of warning (if that Philemon dream counted as a warning). The goal they had been tasked with was also extremely vague, so really, they were coming into this entire situation blindly]

Torii, answer me this. Does the name Nyarlathotep mean anything to you?

This Tower? Hm. So you just came here.

[So, does that mean that all of these people are new here? He has no idea. He notices that Yamato isn't wearing a collar, but he doesn't think that's really suspicious enough to draw attention to.

He doesn't bother repeating the name, but he turns it over in his head a few times as he thinks it over. He puts his hands into his jacket pockets; for a moment, it seems like he won't say anything, but then...]

Nope. I've never heard that name before.

Nyarlathotep is also known as the Crawling Chaos. I will not bog you down with unnecessary details, but it is a dangerous entity that wishes for the self-destruction of humanity. Apparently he resides here. Within the tower.

[Wait. Wait. Nyarlathotep...that doesn't make any sense. Jungo is one of the residents of the Tower who doesn't believe his world back home is really destroyed, because he still plans on going back and helping everyone save it. Even Yamato.]

I haven't met anyone like Nyarlathotep. [Who is this new destroyer of humanity...] How do you know him?

That is his...'thing', so to speak. The Hotsuin family had contradictory information regarding him, but there are interpretations of Nyarlathotep being involved with Philemon in some way. To what extent, we don't know, but...

[The Hotsuin records had information about Nyarlathotep, and a link between him and Philemon (and Philemon's words in the dream just confirmed that connection), but nothing truly concrete.]

He breeds discord and chaos. In short, we are here on behalf of Philemon, to ensure that Nyarlathotep's plans are thwarted. How we achieve that, however... we don't know.

[Philemon didn't say if they had to drag him back to Hinoto-Ri kicking and screaming, or destroy him, and Yamato wasn't sure if you could destroy Nyarlathotep anyway. As long as the destructive side of humanity existed, so did he...]

[A disguise makes sense. Jungo listens to everything Yamato has to say, turning it over in his head...it’s definitely a bit too complex for him, but he can get the gist of it. He’s left with more questions than answers but that’s fine. All he needs to know is one thing.]

That’s all I need to know. If someone like that is hiding here, then we just have to defeat him.

[Did Yamato expect anything insightful or useful? Jungo is better at offering his fists than most things...for the sake of peace!]

[Yamato was beginning to remember the fact that Jungo was not exactly the brightest bulb in the shed. Powerful... but dimwitted. A dinosaur brain just like Keita... well no matter, he could still use him. Somewhat. At the very least he could be a guide for the tower]

But enough of that. Tell me everything you know about this place. Don't leave anything out, no matter how minor the detail.

[...What does he really know about this place? Jungo doesn't sit in front of the terminals and wait for information, and he didn't even ask his roommates a lot of questions. He adjusted to life here too quickly and is just waiting to make more friends and find a way back home more than anything...]

If you want to avoid monsters, you shouldn't go out at night. If you get hurt, that's bad. [Well, obviously, but he doesn't stop there.] They're attracted to blood. They don't attack Jungo when he's in his room at night. They don't attack me, either. [Well, Yamato probably doesn't know about his cat, but...yeah, he'll let him take all of that (little) information in.]

Mhm. I never have any problems in there. I don't think anyone does.

[A few wheels turn in his head at that. He's capable of putting things together sometimes, he just usually needs prompting to do so.] Where's your room?

I have none. I'm guessing, in any case. We did surprise those in charge of the tower, after all.

You should stay with me and Jungo. We have an extra bed because one of our roommates left.

[And here it is revealed that Jungo has no idea about the barrier, either. He just kinda came in without thinking about it.]

Hmm, is that even allowed...? In any case, I cannot leave yet.

[Yamato expects Jungo to remember the barrier at least...? Yes? No? Please be yes, for his sanity]

Mhm. I think so. Sometimes, I let my demons sleep on the bed.

[Okay. Having demons that don't get fused by the end of the day is weird, okay? We can all agree on that?]

Why can't you leave? [It's not that he didn't notice it, it's more like he was in one of his trances and ran so quickly to get here that he couldn't notice it.]

[FULL AGREEMENT, Yamato's demons barely lasted two hours before they were fused!]

There is a barrier that prevents us from leaving these rooms. You...didn't notice it?

You mean you can't walk through it like I did?

No, I cannot. It seems only those who are inhabitants of this tower may walk through it as they wish. It repels us.

[...And he's not sure what else to say on that matter. Really, he's used to getting orders from Yamato, so...]

Learning some actually useful information would be a start.

[But, really, there wasn't much to do. He couldn't go anywhere for the next few hours, Jungo knew barely anything, so... it was time to play the waiting game.]

But for now, you cannot help me. We simply have to wait until the barrier is gone before I can proceed with my investigation.
