Being a workaholic is bad for your health.
Characters: Diarmuid Ua Diurbine and Miles Edgeworth
Setting: Laboratory, Night
Format: Action but I'll match!
Summary: Edgeworth works all day in the laboratory and does not realise what time it is.
Warnings: Character death and gore. It hurt to write, too.
[Waver was not the only one in the Clear Fluid team who spent long hours working in the laboratory. A certain prosecutor sometimes got a tad too absorbed in his work also. When Edgeworth was not doing his obligatory post worker job or training with Diarmuid, taking notes on the tower or at the swimming pool, he could be found here. He would, in fact, be quite happy working all night if it were not for the fact that monsters roamed then.
Tonight, however, the prosecutor was getting so wrapped up in his paperwork that…..he had completely forgotten the time.
Edgeworth was sitting at one of the tables, frowning over Waver’s handwriting (he found it atrocious) and trying to rewrite them in his own words as best as he could. He was going to have to ask the man the next day to read some of his notes out loud to him…
Suddenly, there was a rustling in the room, which made Edgeworth suddenly glance up from his work, alert. He was not alone…
Wait a minute, what time was it?]

It's a mistake that can easily prove deadly.
And it's something that reminds Diarmuid far too much of the fight he's having to fight to keep Waver from killing himself with all of this. He probably shouldn't be surprised. Waver and Edgeworth do have quite a bit in common personality-wise. It's probably why Diarmuid has been so insistent in trying to make friend with the prosecutor even those he tends to be cool and distant most of the time.
Someone so much like Waver can't be that bad even if it takes a bit to get through that cool exterior.]
You know, when I signed up to be a mover it was with the understanding I would be moving equipment and the fluid if need be.
[He smiles crookedly at Edgeworth.]
Between you and Waver, I am going to be carrying people out of here to make them get some rest more than anything else.

Anyway, Diarmuid's entrance makes him relax a little. No monster.....he thinks.] Oh, it's you.
[And he frowns at the carrying comment.] I'd rather you didn- [Suddenly, he hears the rustling noise and instantly becomes on the alert again. Something else is nearby, besides him and Diarmuid.]

It's after dark if you lost track of time. You should be back in the dorms...
[His statements are obvious, but they are less about relying information and more about drawing the attention of whatever is moving around in the room to him instead of Edgeworth who isn't as good of a fighter.]

Suddenly, he notices a large cluseter of glowing eyes.....coming out from the corner of the room, behind Diarmuid.] Look out! [Because they're about to jump at the two men!]
no subject
You need to run.
[The statement is an order. It will be easier for him to concentrate on fighting them if he doesn't have to worry about one slipping away and attacking Edgeworth.]
Don't fight with me about this. Just go! I will draw their attention.

He turns and starts to move towards the stairs.]

It's both a blessing and a curse to have such good friend sometimes...
He starts to back after Edgeworth as he heads for the stairs, but he has only taken one step when the pack charges him. He steels himself and moves forward to meet them, the first swing of his spear taking the head from one and throwing its body into a second. While he would usually try to separate them some for easier fighting, he can't afford to do that right now. It would be too easy for one to get passed him and after Edgeworth.]
Hope this is okay?
Nggh....nggggooooooh!
[Blast, their escape route is completely cut off! They have to think of something else.]
It's fine! I'm sorry I didn't get back to your Plurk sooner.
A quick swing of his spear sends one of the creatures back into the pack. The second meets its end when he pulls one of his swords from his belt and runs it through. Despite how fast he is, though, Diarmuid can't dodge the third completely. Instead, he has to sacrifice his arm to keep the creatures claws from burying themselves in his chest.]

Unfortunately, as Edgeworth was looking for such a place, something black grabbed him on the arms from behind, trying to drag him away. He yelped and immediately grabbed a nearby chair, trying to whack the Neoshadow that had just grabbed him. While he succeeds in knocking it away, two more black talons suddenly grabbed him, making him fall over!]

[Diarmuid hates to turn his back on the pack knowing it will give them the chance to scatter or attack him from behind, but he turns toward his roommate without even a thought since he knows delaying even a second might mean death for his friend who has very few ways to defend himself. He drives the Neoshadows near Edgeworth away, fatally wounding one in the process.
The creatures back off for a moment, but Diarmuid has no doubts it is only for a moment and he plans to make the most use of that time as he can. He pulls the smaller of his swords free and passes it to Edgeworth.]
I know you have no training with swords, but it is the most I can arm you with at the moment. Do your best to--
[Diarmuid's words drop off into a string of curses as around them many pairs of eyes suddenly pop up. Not only has the pack scattered, it seems as though more have come out of hiding....]

Back home, Edgeworth had prosecuted a few cases involving murders by swords. However, that did not mean that he had experience wielding one himself - in fact, he had none at all. Still, it was either this or get eaten alive.
He was about to thank Diarmuid when suddenly he saw the increase of Neoshadows. He would thank the man later when they got out....if they ever did.
Suddenly, one of the Neoshadows that had attacked the prosecutor earlier went straight for him again. Edgeworth, in response, made a pathetic swing to drive it off. While the swing easily missed, it at least stopped the Neoshadow from hitting the prosecutor - momentarily, anyway.]

The monsters don't miss the opportunity and come at the two men from two different sides in an effort to separate them. They might not be the smartest creatures in the world, but it is obvious even to them which man is the threat and which is decidedly not so.]
I guess I could warn for blood and possible gore now? ;_;
....Trying to ignore the fact that blood was trickling down his back, the prosecutor attempted to throw the Neoshadows off him with his arms and legs. While he managed to throw one Neoshadow off, the others managed to start to drag him to a dark corner of the room where they could finish him off....]

Half way through that group and watching more move in, Diarmuid realizes there is no way he will get through them all in time to save Edgeworth and so he forgets fighting them and instead launches himself over them and toward the corner Edgeworth is being dragged to.
He doesn't even feel the set of claws that reach up for him as he goes over the shadows' heads and rip his leg open almost from knee to ankle.]
Yep. Warning for gore.
There, he found himself face-to face with a bunch of Neoshadows with their claws raised. While he tried to free his arm so he could raise it and defend himself, one of the Neoshadows who had held him captive drew their claw into his arm to stop him, giving another an opportunity to drive their arm right into his heart.
Edgeworth sat there, his eyes completely wide. The monsters, they actually managed to....he was going to....
Before he could completely comprehend what was going on, the prosecutor blacked out.
The Neoshadow took its claw out of Edgeworth's chest, staining blood everywhere, before it and its companions started to claw the body open, just so they could reach their goal, their victim's heart.
When they had finished, they instantly turned to their next target - Diarmuid.]
X.x
He only lets himself feel sick for a moment, though, and then everything goes cold. And then blurs. Not because he is crying, but because he is moving so fast. From one Neoshadow to another he moves. Spear, sword, and even his hands rip and cut the monsters apart. Diarmuid bares his teeth at times, growling and hissing at the creatures as he kills them. He has no one to protect now, and that lets him to fall into the battle rage that allowed him to slaughter whole armies by himself in the past.
It's no warp spasm, but it keeps him moving despite his previous injuries. Despite the claws that embed themselves into his left shoulder, far too close to his heart for comfort. None of it phases Diarmuid. He just keeps going and going until every Neoshadow in the room is dead. Only then does he stop. Only then does he feel.
If Waver isn't already on his way to find out why his Servant has been so badly injured, Diarmuid knows he will have to find his friend for healing. But as bad as his injuries are, they will have to wait as Diarmuid refuses to allow whatever monsters that might come by desecrate Edgeworth's body more than it already has been. He collapses next to his roommates body and waits for the retrieval units to come and get it.
He had failed to keep his friend alive after all. This is the least he can do for him in death and even that is nowhere near enough...]
