Being a workaholic is bad for your health.

Characters: Diarmuid Ua Diurbine and Miles Edgeworth
Setting: Laboratory, Night
Format: Action but I'll match!
Summary: Edgeworth works all day in the laboratory and does not realise what time it is.
Warnings: Character death and gore. It hurt to write, too.

[Waver was not the only one in the Clear Fluid team who spent long hours working in the laboratory. A certain prosecutor sometimes got a tad too absorbed in his work also. When Edgeworth was not doing his obligatory post worker job or training with Diarmuid, taking notes on the tower or at the swimming pool, he could be found here. He would, in fact, be quite happy working all night if it were not for the fact that monsters roamed then.

Tonight, however, the prosecutor was getting so wrapped up in his paperwork that…..he had completely forgotten the time.

Edgeworth was sitting at one of the tables, frowning over Waver’s handwriting (he found it atrocious) and trying to rewrite them in his own words as best as he could. He was going to have to ask the man the next day to read some of his notes out loud to him…

Suddenly, there was a rustling in the room, which made Edgeworth suddenly glance up from his work, alert. He was not alone…

Wait a minute, what time was it?]

[A moment is all Diarmuid needs to make sure that is one monster that won't be trying again. He runs it and one of its fellows through with his his spear and then sends the bodies flying out into those who are still waiting to attack. However, as he does two more launch themselves at him from a different angle, and Diarmuid is forced to leave himself open to attack turning quickly to slice them in half with his spear.

The monsters don't miss the opportunity and come at the two men from two different sides in an effort to separate them. They might not be the smartest creatures in the world, but it is obvious even to them which man is the threat and which is decidedly not so.]

[When Diarmuid hears Edgeworth cry out in pain, he realizes exactly what the Neoshadows are up to and, ignoring the risk it puts him in, turns to move back toward his roommate. However, as he does, he finds his path cut off by no less than half a dozen of the monsters. Diarmuid curses under his breath and then dashes into the pack pushing his speed and fighting skill to the full. Five of the monsters die before they know what is going on and the six follows soon after. Unfortunately, they are just replaced by others.

Half way through that group and watching more move in, Diarmuid realizes there is no way he will get through them all in time to save Edgeworth and so he forgets fighting them and instead launches himself over them and toward the corner Edgeworth is being dragged to.

He doesn't even feel the set of claws that reach up for him as he goes over the shadows' heads and rip his leg open almost from knee to ankle.

[Even for one whose talents lay in speed, sometimes things happen too fast. Diarmuid is just looking up from hitting the ground when he realizes he is too late to save Edgeworth. He's too late even to keep the monsters from ripping his roommate's chest open like he is food instead of a person. Even as a battle-hardened warrior, seeing such a thing in enough to turn Diarmuid's stomach.

He only lets himself feel sick for a moment, though, and then everything goes cold. And then blurs. Not because he is crying, but because he is moving so fast. From one Neoshadow to another he moves. Spear, sword, and even his hands rip and cut the monsters apart. Diarmuid bares his teeth at times, growling and hissing at the creatures as he kills them. He has no one to protect now, and that lets him to fall into the battle rage that allowed him to slaughter whole armies by himself in the past.

It's no warp spasm, but it keeps him moving despite his previous injuries. Despite the claws that embed themselves into his left shoulder, far too close to his heart for comfort. None of it phases Diarmuid. He just keeps going and going until every Neoshadow in the room is dead. Only then does he stop. Only then does he feel.

If Waver isn't already on his way to find out why his Servant has been so badly injured, Diarmuid knows he will have to find his friend for healing. But as bad as his injuries are, they will have to wait as Diarmuid refuses to allow whatever monsters that might come by desecrate Edgeworth's body more than it already has been. He collapses next to his roommates body and waits for the retrieval units to come and get it.

He had failed to keep his friend alive after all. This is the least he can do for him in death and even that is nowhere near enough...]
