Ha. So you've been hoarding candy canes, too?

[Well, at least he's not alone in that regard. Grinning, Riku holds up one of the nutrition bars.]

And don't worry. I only plan on throwing this garbage down there.

Iiiit's definitely a possibility.

[Yes. Lorelei had a habit when it came to collecting things that don't belong to him. The nutrition bar is eyed balefully for a moment, and then the red haired man holds up a stick.]

Whatever is on the other side is hungry, and would surely rather eat this stick than that. Don't be cruel to it.

[Because rocks aren't cruel.]

Are you kidding?

[He waves a hand at the rift.]

Whatever's down there probably wants to eat us. I'd say feeding it trash gives it less incentive to climb up here. Think of it as saving our skin.

[With that said, he looks at the stick and almost grabs it.]

But I guess throwing some dried up wood's a step up from actual substance, if you can call these that.

Well, if you think a meal bar is better than a stick... throw it in I guess.

[Lorelei still sounds doubtful about this. Meal bars sounded like unholy torture to him. It was tasteless. How could anyone eat something with no taste? There wasn't even an interesting texture!

The next month (and these months were unusually short!) couldn't come fast enough.]

If it wants to eat us though, it might want meat and not sticks rocks OR meal bars.

[He frowns.]

Maybe I'll try my hand at catching some of the little monsters later. I don't really want to spend a whole lot of time appeasing the thing behind the hole in the floor, but it might be better than losing more fingers. Or a hand.

Wait, why would you want to feed something that could kill us in the first place?

[His expression shifts quite a bit-- first to wide-eyed shock, then it scrunches up like a prune, and he starts rubbing at his forehead.]

I get throwing stuff in for the sake of science, but if you're serious about this...

[The look Riku's given is long and measured.]

Monsters often attack because they're hungry. If they're not hungry, then they won't attack. Roving monsters tend to be just that, hungry. Would you rather face a monster that is ravenous and desperate for a kill, or one that is already sated and not looking for a meal?

Hm. So you think feeding them will curb that vicious streak?

[He takes another look at the rift, letting out a soft hum.]

I guess it's possible, but you kinda have to watch out when feeding wild animals. They might get angry when the food stops coming.

I assume there's no real harm in trying.

[Which doesn't explain the rock he's carefully stuffing into the rift.]

Oh, certainly so! But it usually takes a few days to build up hunger again and by then I'm sure we'll have a better idea of what's going on. At the least, if anyone gets mauled I can put them back together after.

THIS... got lost in my inbox, eep!

So it's basically just a temporary precaution... well, I guess it's worth a shot.

[He looks down at the nutrition bars in his hand, giving a thoughtful hum.]

I just wonder if they'd even discriminate between these things and real food.
