[You most certainly cannot. Especially not when a low whining can be heard from beyond the book cases. It isn't much longer before a dark, beastly figure skulks into view.

Then, almost before it even so much as lays its masked eyes upon the seated Wizard, its leaping toward him with a scream that could make glass quiver.]

[Sam was looking for anyone he knew, he couldn't find mister Frodo anywhere and he had lost his roommates in the confusion of everyone leaving their room. He had came to the library in the hope he would find Gandalf, and did so, just in time to see a monster leaping at him.

So in true stubborn hobbit fashion he leaped forward, sword in hand.]
Leave Gandalf alone you filthy monster!

Okay with me!

[ As the low whining could be heard, Gandalf discreetly reached for his staff, patiently waiting for the monster to make its move. If such a beast was to attack, better leave it to believe its prey was unaware of the danger.

As soon as the scream was heard, the white wizard would turn in the monster's direction, with the attempt to drive his sword into the beast-- Only to see a Hobbit leaping forward between him and the monsters.

Hobbits.

Sam certainly deserved his title of Samwise the Brave. Reckless and courageous, however the wizard stood up from his seat, ready for the beast's next move. ]

Be careful, that's no mere monster.

Mystery monster will never disapprove of extra prey.

[Gandalf's sword would have likely pierced the monster had Sam not interfered. But while the monster works to redirect its focus from the wizard to the hobbit, the action causes it to slip and go skidding into the closest table.

This, however, hardly deters it. An instant later and it's bounding toward them at full speed, mouth open in preparation to sink its teeth into the nearest and seemingly most vulnerable of its prey: Sam.]

[No mere monster? Sam looked at it more carefully, sure he had not seen such a monster before but many of the monsters were strange to him.

He only had time to nod at Gandalf's words before the monster was bounding at him and he was bringing his sword up again, slashing out to try and avoid the teeth.]

[ As Gandalf had feared, the monster aimed for the Hobbit in priority. But one thing was certain: no harm would come to Sam, not as long as the wizard would be nearby and breathing.

While the monster was bounding to the Hobbit as full speed and Sam attempted to slash out at the beast, a bright light came from the tip of Gandalf's staff, destined to try and blind the creature, whilst the wizard would too aim to pierce the creature with his sword. ]

[If the monster had been capable of thought beyond kill, kill, kill it would have wondered if it had bit (or was currently trying to bite) off more than it could chew.

It comes grinding to a stop when Sam slashes at it, then reels backward in confusion and what appears to be strange blend of rage and fear when the light from Gandalf's staff makes it unable to see.

Then, the sword enters its chest. The sound it lets out is almost human in its terrified agony, though amplified louder than a human's could likely be. It writhes, unable to see still, as it tries desperately to loose itself and make another attack.

It would run if it could. But the urge it feels refuses to ebb. Kill, kill, kill it says.]

[Sam winced at the cry, even though the creature had tried to attack them, it was in pain and he paused mid strike from where he was going to help Gandalf.] Stop. It's hurting.

[ As his and Sam's combined attacks appeared to be very effective against the monster, the white wizard was preparing to deal what he hoped would be a final blow-- When the Hobbit paused midway and displayed pity for the monster.

A noble sentiment. But this monster was trying to kill them and would, without a doubt, try again if given a chance. ]

My dear lad, it is hardly the time for you to let your guard down!

[ Unfortunately it may have been too late for this advise, as Sam's hesitation had delayed Gandalf's next strike by quite a couple seconds. ]

[personal profile] themonsters 2013-06-13 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
[And, unfortunately for Sam, Gandalf was right. Regardless of its fear and its pain, the monster doesn't even think twice--doesn't seem to have the capacity to--before acting on the hesitation.

Within those seconds, the screaming, bleeding monster lunges blindly again toward Sam's voice, thoroughly determined to sink its teeth into the hobbit. In the event that it happens to be even remotely successful, Sam would feel fear the instant the bite connected. The sort of fear that made a person freeze completely, and find it almost impossible to summon the will to fight back.]

Sam realises his mistake the moment he makes it and brings his sword up again, unfortunately it's not quick enough to block the monster from biting him.

Terror pressed down upon him, he stood sword in hand, looking like he was about to fight but couldn't, wanting to run but unable to find the courage to even do that.

[ No good. When Gandalf saw the beast bite Sam and the Hobbit subsequently losing all abilities to fight back he had displayed earlier, the wizard threw himself between the Hobbit and the monster.

With one hand move of his staff the wizard tried to throw Sam back and out of reach for the monster, while with his sword he attempted to strike at the wounded beast once more. ]

[If it hadn't been for the fact that the Monster had opened its maw to snap at Sam again and make a new wound, he would have had to have been pried off. But as it were, Gandalf's attempted to separate the two seemed to have worked fairly well.

Though the monster continues to struggle and fight against the wizard, his focus now merely on the one closest to him. That is, until the sword connects once more, slicing across its chest and pouring it open.

And then it's losing momentum, its grotesquely dark legs buckling beneath it.]

[Sam was still paralyzed with fear, eyes wide as he stood shaking watching as the monster fell in front of it.]

[ Gandalf assumes Sam to be safe for now, and focus his full attention on the monster as his attack appears to be successful and the monster's chest is open.

Unlike Sam, the wizard doesn't let pity prevent him from attacking. He aims to stab the creature downward when it falls, in what he hopes will be a final strike. ]

[The monster let's out one final, drawn-out scream as the blade cuts through it. With the last of its energy, it writhes--lashing out desperately with its claws at the men it can't reach.

And then, all at once, it goes limp and stirs no more against Gandalf's sword as blood pools underneath it.]

I assume the effects die with the monsters...

[personal profile] undroppedeaves 2013-06-15 09:37 am (UTC)(link)
[As the monster dies the fear gripping Sam lessens and he lowered his sword, feeling shame rushing at him. Not that Gandalf had really needed his help but to freeze and be no help at all, that wasn't like him.] I'm so sorry Gandalf. I don't know what came over me...

Nothing within your control. This is a monster of Ruana's design, its bite must have had some sort of poison.

[ Gandalf examined the monster's remains quickly-- He'll have to check the network and see what details Ruana gave about the monsters. Then he turned over to Sam and gave him a weak smile, shaking his head. ]

However, whilst compassion is a most admirable trait; it will do you no good if your act of compassion concludes with your death.

[Sam looked ashamed at that as well, though he didn't think compassion was a bad thing, but it was like Gandalf said, he had put them in more danger.] I am sorry, always was a fool, not thinking things through properly.

I wouldn't call you a fool Samwise Gamgee. Only... [A pause.] An optimist.

[ He smiled. ]

Now I believe you should take care of this wound. It would be wise to ensure no poison remains.

[Well that was kinder than what Sam would call himself but he smiled back] Aye I should.
