[After a long, drawn out battle, the infiltration team returns to the residential portion of the Tower, weary, battered... but victorious. Some catching up is in order.]

[Shaking his head, Waver gratefully took the cup of tea and looked around.]

Do we know if we lost anyone this time?

[Diarmuid shakes his head.]

I don't know yet, but...I'm seeing a lot of tired people and not a lot of missing ones. Can it be that almost everyone or everyone did make it?

[Is that too much to hope for?]

Hell might just be serving ice cream.

[In other words, 'it's a clear possibility']

[It's obvious from Diarmuid's expression that he is trying to fight back a silly grin. After all, he hasn't seen either of his brothers yet and those two have ways of getting themselves into trouble, but at the same time...]

How long am I allowed to be optimistic for before I have to let reality sink in again?

Optimistically, five minutes at best. More likely...probably two.

[Diarmuid laughs, sitting down and leaning against Waver's chair, eyes closing. He's certainly not leaning against Waver. What gave that idea?]

We can do this. I know we can.

...We stand a reasonable chance. That's more than I would have said a year ago.

[Diarmuid peeks one eye open to look up at Waver.]

Wow, you're really using that two minutes of optimism, aren't you? Anything else you want to say before reality comes back?

Hm...no, I think I'll decline to comment rather than risk eating my fucking words.

[Diarmuid laughs again.]

Okay, since you are the realist in this duo, it looks like you only got one minute of optimism. Did it hurt? That one minute?

I'm in agonizing pain. We may have to amputate my capacity to have a positive outlook.

Only if it doesn't run away screaming from you first. I am sure one such as yourself is rather foreign territory for it to be in.

It's a lost, dust-covered remnant from when I was young and optimistic.

Maybe I should get out a duster to see if we can't make that remnant feel a little less lost. What do you say?

[Diarmuid looks up at Waver, an odd look in his eyes.]

Would it be so bad once we get back to try and be a little more optimistic sometimes? Even if it is, 'yep I am positive that man is actually here to try and assassinate me?'

I'll take the idea into consideration.

[Shrugging, he brushed a hand through Diarmuid's hair.]

I know. And you know trying is all I ask.

[Diarmuid sighs, leaning into the touch.]

Do...you think you will go to look at the machine if it's safe to get down there now?

The only place I could be considered a technological expert is among magi who think anything more than a rotary phone is a horrible monster.

That is to say, for now I think I'll leave it to those more experienced with machinery. Once things quiet down here, I fully intend to return to my room and possibly go into a week-long coma to make up for all the sleeping I haven't been doing.

[Diarmuid is actually a little relieved to hear this. He doesn't really care of the area might be safe now, anything down below the residential floors is always going to seem dangerous to him. Especially since the only time he has been down there ended up being because of Riki's deception.]

I am glad you are finally going to get some rest. Do you want me to stand guard to make sure you are left alone?

[He turns a grin up at Waver.]

You did help set this whole thing up. I have a feeling there are a lot of people who are going to want to congratulate you or fill you in on what happened down below. You're kind of a leader around here now whether you like it or not.

Please. [Waver rolled his eyes, arms crossed.] I did nothing more than relay information. Organization was left to the others. A leadership role doesn't suit me, so please don't make my part in this sound like one.

At any rate, you're bloody well coming with me. Servant or not, you may as well get some rest too.

As you wish, but you realize it won't be so easy to convince the others of that, right?

[Diarmuid pauses then, looking up at Waver gratefully.]

Thanks. Even with the drain done, I'm exhausted and...I have a feeling if I am alone nightmares are going to be a thing.

[He shivers thinking back to that hallucination. It had felt so real...]

I'm sure my winning fucking personality will at least put them off talking to me. If not, I have a maid for exactly those situations.

[If that was a joke, it was told in a somewhat serious voice. Although he looked irritated, one hand dropped to Diarmuid's shoulder.]

I know--it's likely to be the same for me. Better to have someone around if that happens than panic like idiots on our own, right?

Yes, because you know just how well that personality has worked keeping your students from talking to you back home. It seems the maid will be working overtime...

[Diarmuid takes Waver's words as a joke, hoping that by doing so he will be able to impress upon Waver that is all it should be. When the hand falls on his shoulder, he reaches up to cover it with one of his own.]

Yeah...especially since mine are bound to have something to do with losing you. It will help to have you there as soon as my eyes open.

Hmph...as if getting rid of me is so simple. Your subconscious has a terrible impression of me.

[Diarmuid gives the hand on his shoulder a squeeze.]

Not so much it has a bad impression of you, as it knows my luck and how easy it is for me to do what I think is the right thing, only to have it backfire completely.

You still worry far too much. We should work on that.
