Summary: Just the new guy probably wishing he wasn't so ~mysterious~

Room 3-14
[Finding and getting his bandages put back over his eyes was Shiki's first priority. With his power, his brain continually degraded when he saw the things he shouldn't. Death. He was used to it, a lifelong companion who would never abandon him, but the human brain just couldn't deal with it. To prevent himself from degrading any further, he always wore them, making him blind to the world around him and relying on his instincts and other senses.

Thanks to the note, he quickly found them but he made sure to take a look around before those bandages were wrapped tight around his eyes. It was all too eery but he was used to it. That was his every day life. The only thing left to do was check his surroundings. Both inside this room and outside.]



Dormitory hallways
[Once he made it outside the room, he did the best thing that came to mind. Put a hand against the wall and walk, keeping the contours in mind for later use. Sure, it was freezing cold, but when you spend some time in Germany in the winter (living outdoors), you gain a certain level of tolerance for such things. Before he ever actually runs into anyone though, Shiki is quick to walk around or step out of the way. He can't see but he can still hear and, more importantly, feel where people are.

Though, if he does come near someone, he gives a small smile.]

Floor 11
[Open air was what he was seeking. There was danger near the edge so Shiki stayed quite a bit back from it. But he did take a deep breath, partially wondering if the air was poisonous but not spending too much time thinking on it.]

Where did things go wrong?

[Or more specifically, how did he end up here? This wasn't the best place to be when he had to be by Arcueid's side, even if she was still in her eternal sleep.]

[Tohko nods, a grin on her face.]

Of course! I love books and know more about them than anyone else!

That's a lofty statement. If you're that confident, you must be pretty sure of it.

[About knowing more about them, that is.]

Of course I am! I wouldn't call myself a book girl otherwise.

That's pretty impressive. I don't read much but every once in a while, I'll be in the mood for it.

Well, that's good! At least you're reading a little bit..even though you should be reading more, if you feel up to it. After all, in books, you'll find hope, despair, joy, sadness, good, evil, right, wrong, orange and blue, and all sorts of flavors! By using books, we can better understand the people around us, as well as ourselves!

Is it really a good idea to try to understand everyone? Some things just aren't meant to be known.

Well, it usually is..that way, we can help each other out when we're hurt or scared, and with better understanding comes better friendships and relationships all around.

[Tohko then looks a little puzzled.]

What things shouldn't be meant to know about?

There are just some things people should never know. I don't know how to describe it beyond that.

I admit that some details and facts could hurt people..but couldn't know knowing them hurt them even more?

What you don't know can't hurt you is sometimes pretty true. Over the past couple years, I've learned that perception is a very powerful weapon to wield.

For example, could you imagine that there are creatures out there who can't die simply because they don't know what death is? How do you kill something that doesn't know how to die?

Well, you could probably try to introduce the idea of dying to them. Even if they are immortal, they'll have to at least understand that other creatures die. But..why would you want to kill these creatures anyway?

If you introduced the idea of people having wings, would people suddenly sprout wings? Not really, because in your mind, you know humans can't have wings.

But most of these creatures want to kill all humans.

Well, you made it sound like these monsters would die if they realized what death was. I apologize for the misunderstanding though. But..why do they want to kill humans? Do we taste good? Are they scared of us? Do they have some grudge against us?

Probably because they're scared. After all, humans are scary. Imagine that you were an intelligent being but you were created by something and all those you knew were also creations. But then there exists a species that evolves out of control and becomes an intelligent race without any outside help and they seem to destroy everything they touch. Wouldn't that be scary?

I don't think humans destroy everything they touch..and while I might be a little scared when I first heard of this new race, I would want to learn more about them. After all, with knowledge comes understanding, which lessens fear and usually helps. Killing things just creates conflict. It doesn't help anyone.

Humans have been slowly killing the planet. You can practically turn on the news to hear that. Animals going extinct, rainforests getting cut down, that kind of thing.

Not that I'm criticizing. I'm a human, after all, and I do all the same thing. But we're definitely pretty destructive. Others out there are probably wondering when it'll be their turn.

Humans do a lot of terrible things, but we also do a lot of wonderful things too! We're trying to save the planet and extinct animals. It's not like we like the fact that some animals go extinct or are put on the endangered species list.

If you open a book, you'll read hundreds of tales of human kindness, compassion, heroism, courage, and survival! Even science fiction stories have those elements!

There's a large gap between fiction and reality. ...that's the problem with being buried in books, even if they are true stories.

You forget a huge tip in writing: write what you know. There are tons of memoirs that speak of kindness, of saving lives, of generosity! Books that are based on true events that do the same! The gap between fiction and reality isn't that large.

How many are doing good things in the name of something bad? Sure, the soldiers gave children some chocolate but they're still invaded the country those kids live in. In the big picture, it's not so easy to justify things.

I admit, there are a few people who do stuff like that, but that doesn't make up everyone. Maybe the soldiers didn't have a choice. If they didn't, their families and homes might have been burned down by their oppressive dictator, and taking over the country that those kids live in makes them semi-suicidal or depressed.

It may not be easy to justify things..but that doesn't mean that humans are just destroyers and polluters.
