Summary: Rei shows Ryoji how to kill monsters

Night, a time when many have already returned to their rooms for fear of the monsters roaming around. One solitary figure, though, remains outside, rocking on her heels, humming a cheerful song to herself. It seems normal enough for a girl her age, but is a little at odds with her frigidly beautiful appearance and the dark surroundings. She seems to hold no fear for the monsters, though she does take care to avoid their attacks.

It is no accident that she is out here at this time. She promised to show someone something. In a way, this is for her a ritual of bonding. Thus, she will not touch the monsters. Not until her partner arrives.

When Ryoji arrives, he will find her waiting still. Alone, unarmed, but beaming.

It took Ryoji a bit longer than it should have to arrive where Rei asked him to. He was usually just slightly late, determined not to cause anyone to worry, even though his laziness usually kept him preoccupied until a casual glance at the time sent him barreling out the door.

But this time is much different. Rei's a nice girl, but the monsters she's going to show him? They definitely are not. He's a mess of contradicting emotions, as always-determined to help get rid of some of them and keep his friends safe, but terrified of using his powers against them and whether they will actually harm or end up helping-and it's only when he remembers that Rei doesn't care what he is that he finally convinces himself to hurry over.

When he spots her, he's smiling weakly at first, but that smile is quickly replaced with surprise. Shouldn't she have a weapon?

"Rei-chan, are you okay? I-I wanted you to be careful..."

This certainly doesn't look careful, but of course, what does Ryoji know about her and her skills?

[terreifying]

She turns and waves at him, giving him a cheerful smile that shows too many teeth.

"Heee~ey! You came! And don't worry about me. I'm always careful."

[notsogrimreaper]

Ryoji's a little nervous, but he tries to ignore that discomfort and smile back at Rei.

"Of course I came... I have to learn how to fight."

[terreifying]

"Then watch and wait."

She turns around and stares into the surrounding darkness. Slowly, a groups of imps approach, all with glowing red eyes hanging out of their sockets, shredded cat ears, and blood-soaked tails tangled with long yellow scarves.

"Mm, these guys seem like fine practice."

[notsogrimreaper]

Ryoji can't help but gasp a little. Sure, the monsters looked a bit like monsters, but the cat ears... a-and the scarves... they looked so much like his. Was he as bad as them?

Sorry, Rei, but he may be incapacitated for the first fight.

[terreifying]

Meanwhile, Rei charges forward, easily ducking under a claw from an imp to punch it on the chin.

"See? you stun it first."

With one smooth motion, she steps behind the reeling imp and puts it in a headlock.

"The good thing about these things is that they can't regenerate. Not like the stuff back in my world."

[notsogrimreaper]

Ryoji watches in shock for a moment, but Rei makes it look easy, so maybe he could handle this.

"The things in your world regenerate?"

He vaguely remembers Shadows being able to do that... or they must have, otherwise Apathy Syndrome would have been wiped out easily.

[terreifying]

"Yep. But if you damage them enough, it'll take a while for them to regenerate completely. And you can kill them for real if you destroy the core."

There is a nasty crack as the imp's neck is snapped. Without even dropping the corpse, Rei downs another imp with a side kick.

[notsogrimreaper]

Ryoji winces at the sound, a little uncomfortable with the fighting, but at the same time amazed. Rei really wasn't kidding when she said she was 'careful'. In all honesty, she didn't need to be, she was so strong none of the imps could come near her.

[terreifying]

She waves at him, signaling for him to come over.

"Come on. I'll let you get in the final blow for this one."

[notsogrimreaper]

"O-Okay..."

Ryoji takes a step forward before remembering that he's still unarmed. He focuses, and after a flash of light, he's tranformed into Thanatos, hovering over to where Rei is.

[terreifying]

"Cooool!"

Rei surveys his new form. He looks awesome...and something like a world-destroyer.

"Now, what you wanna do is hit a vital spot."

She grabs an approaching imp by the scarf.

"The heart's a good place to hit if you can do a diagonal stab through the solar plexus or a horizontal stab through the ribs. Or you can just chop off its head. Careful not to hit any bones, now. They might be too hard for you."

[notsogrimreaper]

Thanatos nods a bit, readying its rapier before plunging it straight in the middle of the imp's torso, blood going everywhere. A few droplets even stain Thanatos's head.

[terreifying]

Rei drops the imp and claps.

"Yay! You did it! Your first monster kill!"

[notsogrimreaper]

Thanatos isn't able to do much except let out a low growl. That may have been a thank you, if he wasn't so caught up in the thrill of violence. Another imp gets close and Thanatos removes his sword from the other's corpse, charging it and grabbing it by the neck.

[terreifying]

Rei too charges at another imp. First, she grabs it by the claw and yanks it over her head. Then, she grabs one of its legs. With some effort, she tears it in half at the waist.

[notsogrimreaper]

There's an ugly snap as Thanatos succeeds in breaking the imp's neck, before he spins around to slash at another imp's torso.

[terreifying]

Meanwhile, Rei finishes tearing the heart out of another imp. Whatever imps that were left alive were now scampering away.

"Wanna do the kill tally now?"

[notsogrimreaper]

Ryoji finally reverts back to his human form, breathing heavily and trying to ignore the urge to chase after the monsters.

"S-Sure..."

[terreifying]

"Here's one for you, and one for me, and two for you and two for me..."

Rei continues to count in a sing-song tone until she finishes assigning all of the imp casualties.

"We're at an exact tie tonight! Good job!"

[notsogrimreaper]

"Um... g-good. We got rid of a lot of them, didn't we?"

Ryoji doesn't care about the competition, as long as the people here are safe for a little while.

[terreifying]

"Yep!"

For Rei, saving people and killing monsters are synonymous. Since it's part of the purpose she was created for, she sees nothing wrong in enjoying it.

"Did you have fun?"

[notsogrimreaper]

"I... It was a little scary, but I'm glad I came."

That's Ryoji's only way to reply. He couldn't ever have fun killing something. Even Thanatos, with its hunger for destruction, does it out of anger or some other strong emotion, not for fun.

[terreifying]

She nods eagerly.

"If you ever wanna do it again with me, just knock on the door of 3-15, okay? I'm always up for hunting with friends!"

It might seem a bit scary to passer-bys, the way this girl, covered in blood, beautiful in a way that cannot be called human, is speaking of killing things like others would speak of going to the movies or the mall.

"Right. Of course. Thank you very much, Rei-chan."

It was true. Rei was beautiful, dangerous, terrifying, inhuman... yet Ryoji liked her. She kind of reminded him of... well, of himself. They had a lot in common so far. And despite her strangeness, she was nice. Ryoji hoped they would continue to be friends.
