Midsummer Bash

Characters: Lancer, the people he invited to the party, and everyone else who wants to stumble in
Setting: Floor 25, July 5, afternoon
Format: Open
Summary: Lancer throws a party for midsummer, since the Tower obviously needs a breather.
Warnings: None so far.

[To be honest, Lancer wanted to have the party in the evening, sometime around twilight. That would have been the most romantic time for it. Unfortunately, when in the Tower, one had to account for things like monsters. As a result, he had to hold it during the afternoon. But it wasn't too bad of a compromise.]

[This was, of course, a more simple affair than Diarmuid's birthday. For food, he had hauled a couple of tables up here and lined the table with dinner food. The centerpiece was a cake which had a heart drawn on it in red frosting. In one corner of the meadow, he had used some boxes and tarp to make some sort of booth where people could hide from the sun (and steal kisses off of each other). In the center of the meadow, he had piled a large stack of wood, perfect for lighting a bonfire by the party's end. The structures had all been surrounded with wreaths made from the meadow's flowers.]

[As soon as he's done with the setup, Lancer will sit down next to the firewood pile, waiting for people to come.]

[When Diarmuid sees Ryoji, instead of just stopping by the boy and greeting him, he leans forward and whispers into his ear.]

Looking for Yukiko?

[Adoptive father's are allowed to tease their sons. At least he just whispered it...]

[Whisper or not, the sudden voice and what it was saying makes the poor kid jump and flush an almost impossibly bright shade of red that doesn't disappear, even when he turns and sees who was teasing him.]

D-Diarmui-Father! [He still needs to get the hang of calling him that.]It's not like that, I-I was looking for Minato-kun too, and I invited both of them here... I just wanted them to have a break too!

[Diarmuid raises a teasing eyebrow at Ryoji.]

Two at once? My my... I had no idea, son...

[He knows he probably shouldn't tease the boy so badly, but Diarmuid can't help but wink at him.]

Are you sure you can handle them both at the same time? Maybe I should get my brother to give you some pointers...

[Oh wow, you've managed to get him to panic even more now. He's suddenly gone a deep shade of blue now, like he's choking, and the way that he's grabbing his scarf, that may actually be the case. Perhaps his heart jumped into his throat and lodged itself there.]

I-I'm not dating both of them! Minato is a friend! He's not- I mean, I don't-

I don't want pointers anyways! I'm... I'm really happy with Yukiko!

[Alarm drives the amusement from Diarmuid's eyes.]

Son, breathe! I am only teasing you. Of course I don't think you are dating them both!

[Yukiko would kill Ryoji if that was the case...]

[He takes a few deep breaths before looking over at Diarmuid, still a little unsettled.]

D-Don't joke about that! Do you really think I'm that bad?

[He'd only flirt with people while he had a girlfriend, not go any farther, duh. Hey, speaking of... Ryoji's blush returns.]

Why did you think I would date Minato?

[Diarmuid shakes his head.]

It's called teasing son. It's something that fathers and sons do. They tease each other. It's not meant to be taken seriously.

I am sorry for upsetting you. Of course, I don't think you would ever do anything to hurt Yukiko. You would never hurt anyone. It's just that I thought...

[I thought you had romantic feelings for Minato. He thinks it, but doesn't say it because he doesn't want to send Ryoji into another panic.]

[He shakes his head now, trying to get rid of his blush.]

Right... Sometimes I don't realize when people are joking, and I end up taking things too seriously. I'm really sorry.

[Ryoji tries to smile, as if to show that he's no longer panicked, but it fades into confusion. Why does Diarmuid keep trailing off like that? Did Ryoji make him uncomfortable somehow?]

[Diarmuid laughs lightly.]

I am the same way actually. Well, used to be the same way. I'm a little better now, but I still don't always realize when someone is just teasing me. I may not be too bad at teasing now and then, but I was never as good as my fellows at telling when someone was teasing me. It's just something that takes practice, I guess.

[When Ryoji asks Diarmuid to continue his sentence, he blushes slightly in embarrassment and then waves a hand dismissively.]

It's nothing important. I think I just misunderstood something you told me way back when we first met which would be understandable since I didn't know you as well back then. Please don't worry about it.

Well, I guess with you, I’ll get my practice. Funny, I used to love teasing some of my other friends. My best friend let me joke around with him all the time.

[Sometimes he forgets how much he misses Junpei… Surely he’s alright back home… or he will be, once they restore the worlds.

Ryoji raises an eyebrow, but shrugs.]

Alright… sorry if I said something confusing.

I think everyone has some people they find it easier to tease and joke with. I had little trouble teasing Oscar and I think sometimes I tease Waver too much...

[Diarmuid laughs lightly.]

But there are others that I have serious trouble with. Things happen, though, and we change. In the end, if we want that part of ourselves back we just have to keep trying to reclaim it.

[He shakes his head and smiles at Ryoji.]

No, don't be. It is just one of those things that happens. Lets forget about it, shall we?

I'm sure I'll get used to you teasing me though, if you do it often. Just... don't joke about me two-timing Yukiko when she's around. I don't think she'd appreciate that.

[Technically, he did cheat on her, but that whole thing was thanks to Sephiroth, so it doesn't count.]

I'm fine with forgetting it as long as it doesn't bother you!

You needn't worry. I wouldn't joke about that kind of thing with her around. I am not as close to her as I am to you. I don't know her as well and teasing about that kind of thing in a situation like that is asking for someone to get hurt. I would not what to hurt her like that.

[Diarmuid presses his hand to his chest and bows slightly.]

You have my word, I will not tease like that with her around.

Thank you. I really didn't think you would, but I just wanted to make sure.

...But if you do like to do it, you can tease me when she isn't here.

[Eventually he'll learn not to get so freaked out by it... Eventually.]

[Diarmuid smiles.]

I am glad you don't mind too much. Not only will it help you to becomes more used to it, it can be fun. Just so long as it doesn't go too far. Even if you are okay with me teasing you, I really hope you will say something if I do ever go too far at any time.

Of course I will! Don't worry so much about me. I think the way you do it is alright, so I'll be sure to have fun with it and get used to it.

Good, good.

[Diarmuid reaches out and lightly ruffles Ryoji's hair.]

When you find Yukiko, tell her hi for me, would you? I'm going to go and see if there is anything I can do to help my brother out with all this. Have fun, all right?

I'll tell her. You make sure to have fun too! I'll see you around.

[He laughs and offers a wave as Diarmuid walks off.]

[What. WHAT IS THIS.

Suddenly, the entire area is on fire.

Because reasons.]

[NO YUKIKO STOP HE DIDN'T CHEAT ON YOU]
