[It's by chance that England finds France on the eleventh floor; he's on the way up to the reference library when the familiar shock of blonde hair by the lake catches his eye.

As soon as he turns to look, he's assaulted by the image of Francisca in the water, eyeing it like it would give her the answer to the emptiness she was feeling. His hand reaches for the safety rail on the wall of its own accord while the scene steals his breath away. England sways where he stands and blinks his eyes rapidly until Francisca becomes Francis again, the France in the here and now.

He takes a deep, shaky breath into his tight lungs, watching hollowly for a moment as France cleans his rapier. When England has finally shaken off the assault of memory, he addresses France with notable preoccupation:]
...why are you sitting here?

[France glances back at England, eyes glazed over for a second like he's lost in some daydream. He blinks to bring himself back to reality, but the difference is minute. His face still looks blank, devoid of emotion. He lifts the hilt of the rapier an inch and answers England's question in an even tone.]

I'm cleaning it off. [It's at that moment that he seems to realize it's England he's talking to. He should at least try to be hostile, shouldn't he? Unfriendly? Snarky? Something of the sort?] ...Is there a problem with that?

[That didn't come out with any bite at all.

It isn't as if he's stopped disliking England, of course. He doesn't want to sob on his shoulder or anything dumb like that. But he certainly doesn't feel the need to purposefully try to push him away, especially now that he's one of the few people from France's world remaining in the Tower.

And, as an afterthought, England is acting like there really is a problem with him sitting by the lake. He wonders why that is.]
