Youkai?

[The figure looked vaguely like someone Houjuu had just met, though what Chloe saw was nothing like the girl she'd eaten breakfast with the other day. She lurked just off the main path, seated on one of the cocoon lips. When she saw the spirit slashing and destroying everything in its path, she chuckled and leaned back.]

They fear not even the gods of the realms. They will not fear you, youkai. I might, but they won't.

You're just a doll for them to break.

[The voice is familiar, but with Nue in her current state of mind, she can't place it after having only met Chloe once. She doesn't even try to place it. She whirls on the speaker, hissing out a low, animalistic noise through her teeth.]

Obviously. Obviously, they don't fear anything!

[Her voice raises in volume and intensity as she speaks, but then it lowers again, quiet and dark.]

They're fools. Only fools don't feel fear. I'm going to do them a favor and teach it to them, so they won't make this kind of mistake again.

Oh... I do like your spirit, but you do know that all of the gifts, the hexes, the spell cards and the tricks you youkai favor so much, those talismans and what not? None of them work. Only the strength you have with that toy spear of yours is there.

You must find the things that they fear to use them against them, if you wish to turn it on those masters.

[Spell cards... That simple phrase sends a shock through Nue's mind, and in another circumstance she might reflexively jolt or recoil. Now, though, in her anger, she only feels more furious at being spoken to that way from someone she doesn't recognize, and only thinks to demand an answer.]

[She chuckled and shrugged, looking at Nue and raising her hands in a disarming gesture.]

I have seen oni and youkai and magicians... I have watched you rage, seen you adjust, heard you plot... In the end, few seem to ever find a way to make them actually notice you. Here, or there.

[Nue listens. It's an illuminating answer—though, of course, all the conclusions she draws from it are wrong, unbeknown to her.]

[Several long second pass before Nue replies. When she does so, her tone is colder than before, though no less intense in its emotion.]

I was noticed. I was feared.

So, I'll make the people here fear me, too. That's all there is to it.

You can make me ... concerned easily enough. I respect the power your kind possesses already. I just know the power these creatures possess.

...fear, you say, though. You like to be feared do you?

[That answer seems to mollify her some, or at least enough that the wireframe body's posture shifts into something vaguely more relaxed. The extra limbs at her back lash back and forth, the movement quick and sharp.]

Of course. What kind of youkai doesn't?

The bridge princess for one... but I was given to believe she was a strange youkai in some ways.

She was probably just young. It seems like a lot of youkai these days have forgotten what it means to be one, but I haven't.

[Maybe now is not the best time to go KIDS THESE DAYS, but that's what she does.]

She was something of a spirit of jealousy. I have no idea how old she actually was. But I expect most of the youkai were a bit more like you... at least in part.
