Among all the deceit, it is important to have some evidence of reality. It would be easy to believe that this itself was just an illusion without it.

[In other words, it was important to have-- some sort of anchor.]

You yourself seem to be handling it quite gracefully. [Though he wouldn't expect anything less, she was still a young women, despite everything that's happened here.] It is... regrettably, unlikely that others will. But I do not believe it is very fair to harass the messenger, is it?

Concepts of fairness may be beyond some people, in the wake of being told nearly everything physical about their lives has been an illusion. If they need someone within their reach to blame, I will not hide my involvement.

[She won't break down because she doesn't have that right. Not really. Not when it was her choice. But if nothing else, she will face the consequences of her actions with dignity.]

No doubt it helps to have a target of vitriol... Still, I should hold faith that they rather direct their resentment towards those who claim to be our rulers, if only because that is their typical habits.

[He can't say he's surprised by her resolve-- and truly, it's probably the right thing to do. But that doesn't mean he has to be entirely happy with it.]

...Are you sure you are alright, then? About everything? [It's more than just an adviser worried about a decision-- for all the respect, it's still a friend worried about a friend.]

I hope so as well, honestly, but... hoping for the best should always come hand in hand with preparing for the worst.

[It's the only way to hope to accomplish anything in this kind of situation and come out of it sane. And even if none of the residents aim their anger in her direction, there is the matter of that chilling howl from the administrative levels...]

... It is... not a pleasant revelation, of course, but the truth is better than living in ignorance, I believe. I do not regret my part in this, at least.

[It's not okay. It's never okay in this place. But after seventeen months of spinning her wheels, she's finally done something. She doesn't regret that.]
